    I have a 2005 SLK55 that I bought a year ago and it’s been rock solid. Bought it as a weekend fun car and it has ended up being my daily driver. 126,000 miles on and still going strong.

      They were very popular for a reason. V8, 7-speed, good exhaust sound, folding roof. It's really not that much more expensive than an SLK32 and definitely worth the extra $.

      @@AMGmeister I also bought a 2005 slk 55 AMG under 2 years ago and unfortunately had the transmission pump fail. Costed $3k but other than that it's been good. Overall with upgraded engine mounts (black series mounts) and camber bolts ($2700), wheels tires and all the other maintenance stuff. Total is over $10k on top of what I paid for the car. Yes these cars are very reliable but I just want people to not be shocked when they find out cost of repairs. My car.onky has 82k miles on it and is literally in new like condition.

      Indeed. I had a CLK 55, then a C5 Z06, then another CLK 55, in that order. The AMG build quality was far and above the Vette. Insurance was more for the Benze than the Vette, until I discovered classic car insurance and was able to insure my second one as a collector car for $600 a year, with guaranteed value. Both were cabriolets which are very low numbers in the states.

    I used to hate most of the AMGs of this era.
    But today it's a little bit different, since AMG lost almost all of it's glory due to political and financial decisions. It's nice to look on these older cars and to give them a secound chance. And damn, they're impressive. I'd really love to own a W211 E55 f.e. or a CL or CLK55, but it's honestly too expensive, especially here in germany. Prices for the cars are higher, gas is at least twice as expensive as in the US and all the other costs are usually higher too. But who knows, maybe one day.
    I live near Affalterbach, so I see all kinds of AMG models all the time, it even became normal to see prototype cars. But since they're fitting bullshit engines like the 2.0 or the 3.0 in the cars it just makes me sad. Even the 4.0 BiTurbo is kind of garbage if you compare it to the 5.5 and 6.2. The good days are over, so lets focus more on the older models, they deserve our love

    Another great AMG video ‘Meister! I just did a 110,000 mile service on my W211 E55 today and she still purrs like a kitten! It’s got a few minor mods and a new set of Conti Extreme Contact tires and she will get a set of long tube headers and a secondary intercooler in the spring. I also picked up a near mint W210 E430 for a daily driver that only had 2 owners in the same family since it was purchased in California and came with extensive dealer maintenance records. I thoroughly love them both and trust either of to go anywhere, anytime. Even after discovering that the water pump was starting to go south, the E430 got me, the family and the dog through a 1000 mile trip during the polar vortex storm that hit at Christmas and got us there and back safely without a complaint. It surprises me how on average, W210 E55 AMGs fetch about double what C208 CLK55 AMG coupes and cabrios do on Bring-a-Trailer, despite being less rare than the CLKs and a less sporty body style.
    The price disparity between the pre-facelift and post-facelift versions of W220 S55 and C215 CL55 surprises me not one bit, however. The pre-facelifts' rust issues, early woes with ABC and airmatic, and the fact that they're about 30% less powerful makes them far less desirable.

    • @AMGmeister
      @AMGmeister  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I think the E55 looks quite a bit better - at least in my opinion. They had to squeeze the styling a bit to make it fit on the c-class platform of the CLK55. Park one next to an E55 and I think you'll know what I mean. The E55 also came with 18" wheels which look a lot better than the CLK55's 17" wheels. That being said the CLK55 is still a bargain.

    I've had a few Mercedes from this era a SLK 320 and CL 500 both from 2001, the latter converted to coilovers to rid of the ABC system.
    Unfortunately my SLK 320 was wrecked by an idiot truck driver who reversed his trailer over my car, but these cars are great value. I've driven all the collectable Mercedes & AMG cars from the 80s and 90s as I know a collector of these and in all honesty, I prefer the Daimler-Chrysler era styling, handling and performance. I'd love an SL 55 Kompressor R230 specifically, I can't think of many cars I'd choose over one of those.

    CLk have major problems with rust though. Not as bad as the w210. But it is still an issue one has to keep in mind in snowy regions, coastal regions or without a garage

    I was also expecting to see a W210 E55/E50 but I guess for those models the price can vary from ~10k-40k dollars. Can someone describe what it's like to drive the CLK55 compared to the E55?

      I owned a 2001 CL 500. Dazzling car, but a maintenance nightmare. The third time all the side windows started to delaminate, necessitating full replacement, I dumped the car, with no regrets. They are prone to many other problems, AMG or not.

    I regret EVERY DAY not getting an AMG from this list (specifically W208 or not mentioned W210 E55) instead of my daily pre facelift C207 E350. I was newer to wrenching then, but at this point I've done more work/maintenance (& continue to) on my E350 coupe than I likely would've on any car on this list as well as the lovely W210 E55. W211 would probably have been less work (or the same) too disregarding SBC & airmatic of course. (Brakes as well).
    If you've read this far & are on the fence between a depreciated AMG like these, or a lesser "normal" Benz from a similar era, it is very likely you will spend AMG time & money on a non AMG like me. It hasn't been too bad really & I do love the C207, but PLEASE don't make the mistake I did.

    I think E420 could be another alternative. 315hp and 730 torque. With tune its 400+hp and 1000+ torque. Suspension and brakes are worse tan those AMG models but this is great diesel alternative. Prices are around $10K.

    • @MDavidG1

      I own a 2007 R230 SL65. It has been incredible. But don't buy an R230 from m.y. 2006 or earlier. Many subtle but important tweaks were made for 2007, including improving the hydraulic suspension system a lot. My suspension has given me NO problems and the car is sixteen years old. The coils will go eventually, but the vast majority of things that can go wrong with an R230 SL65 are the things that will go wrong on ANY R230.

    • @JeffEdwards258
      @JeffEdwards258 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MDavidG1 I already own a 2005. It's a good driver quality car and is fantastic to drive. The only issue I have, which I heard is fairly common, is that the shocks will leak down and the car will settle if it sits for a long period.

    I'm going to the US for an internship in a few moths and I would like to buy a cheap reliable Mercedes (best case with V8) there.
    My favorites are the w140 or the r129.
    What do you think about these models? And do you have any buying tips?

    • @RothBeyondTheGrave
      @RothBeyondTheGrave ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For w140, be prepared for electronic diagnosis and repairs. Depending on where you'll be, not many people are left who know how to properly diagnose them if you're not doing your own work. For r129, beware of roof hydraulics, as in everything having to do with the roof. The control module, mechanical bits & most notably the fluid lines.
      As you already know, their past life is what will determine their future with you. People seem to love neglecting w140's along with all used Euro cars here in the states. Always a gamble.
