In recent times TVC started having a serious paint apps problem. The figures have less and less paint, now they're even skipping on a simple wash on an expensive vehicle... It makes everything look cheap.
@flossink6886 even random mandos like the Clone Wars ones were suitably battle damaged and great paint apps. Sad really, I still really rate that figure, that's how we should be getting them now. Cost cutting
paint apps seem to be what costs the most money, or at least are easier to leave out of the process to save money! It's a real shame because the sculpts and figure production is the best it's ever been (on new tools) - so what we get in articulation and 'build' we lose in paint details. Modern economic pressures I guess!
The good news is an acrylic wash is very very simple to apply yourself and instantly improves it to next level. And if you don’t like it, it’s easy to remove with water or windex.
As a model maker, id say it doesn't necessarily need "weathering"...what it needs is the details enhancing with "panel liner" which picks out the panel lines and recessed detail. You could do this yourself Nick (but you shouldn't have to) id use a dark grey panel liner from tamiya or AK interactive. Also, details like the undercarriage need painting in metallic paint and detailing.
@@trooperwolfie yeah I agree but the whole doesn’t necessarily need weather well It does really we’re paying top ££ for adult toy line and looks like the force awaken cheap nurf line it’s not good enough all I’m saying, I totally agree with Nick
@@royston190 what I was saying is that it needs the details picking out, weathering is a modelling term for dirtying/chipping the paint finish, if this is supposed to be a clean new vehicle it doesn't necessarily need dirtying up, but there should be paint apps to enhance the panel lines and finer details. I understand not everyone is a model maker and the terms used can be confusing.....and none of us should have to apply paint apps ourselves. I agree that these toys/models are expensive and should be finished accordingly.
@@trooperwolfie yeah man 'enhanced details' is what I was getting at... and exhibit A would definitely be the Poe Xwing. I think I mention the panels and grills too... but yeah man overall, that new E-Wing suffers when one can compare it to way better looking products.. remember that Rogue One tank?... omg... beautiful 😍👌 👌 🩵
I don't think you're being harsh at all. The whole point of TVC and the higher price tags we're all willing to pay up for, is collector grade quality. This feels like a $70 ship, not 100 bucks man. But I still (begrudgingly) bought it 😂
It's the Disney take on the true E-Wing from Dark Empire. They could've at least included an option for the dorsal cannon that covers the droid socket. E-Wings never had droids, just like the A-Wing & B-Wing. This is an easy pass for me.
I think personally with the astromech, they could have done a subtle wash all over it. For example, I have the Mandalorian version of R5-D4, and that has a nice, subtle, decent wash over it. They seem like they do great with their paint apps, and then they go and ruin it with just 1 vehicle!! The Poe X-Wing like you pointed out,has a fantastic look to it. And this vehicle could have been amazing,if it had only been properly weathered!! I didn’t get it anyway, but it would still be nice to know that everyone else got a decent looking ship. Considering the money that us collectors spend on these things, I think it’s only right that they continue to do what they have been doing all along with every single vehicle, playset etc etc!! Anyway, rant over 😂 Great video and review as always 👍
I’m right there with ya with being more choosy about what I buy to keep carded these days. Pretty much stopped with all new media. The ship looks like 5poa line without a wash
I miss the mid to late 2000s when Star Wars vehicles like this were easily obtainable in stores like Walmart, ToysRUs, etc. and were reasonably affordable. This E Wing looks nice, but I own a 3D printed 3.75 scale E Wing kit I got from Etsy and painted. It's based on the original design, but I wish the OG E Wing had an official toy in this scale.
Its a massive issue as the orignal Aesthetic of Star Wars was like a future in terms of technology, yet everything looked old, dusty and worn. Take that away and the charm of that that made it what it was, it just becomes bland looking like all the other crap they churn out these days
I don't believe it needs a wash but it does need the panel lines, maintenance areas and exhaust ducts, etc highlighting. Tamiya do some great products: Panel Line Accent Color and Tamiya Weathering Master set B with soot and rust.
I sort of disagree with the vehicle needing a wash: Considering the E-Wing is (in lore) a brand new state-of-the-art starfighter. So it wouldn’t make sense for them to be grimey quite yet. However, a basic panel lining job with a Gundam Marker will definitely help make those extra details pop out. It’s what I did to mine and it looks excellent
I got mine on Wednesday I've put luke skywalker 5 p.o.a inside I picked up in a charity shop a while ago and a stan solo custom driod R4 M9 seen in a new captured with the rebels
Since Hasbro told us that paint apps drive higher production cost I got a question for you: Would you prefer this as is or à weathered with a 20% higher price?
This is without doubt the best design ship Disney has come up with in Star Wars. I love the look of this ship. When Hasbro said they were making it I was over the moon and Pre - ordered one as soon as I could. And then , well talk about disappointing the weathering doesn't concern me as much but would have really completed it. But having no Pilot released for it and having to wait till god knows when to get one for it is just insane. You think they would have learnt from Kenner's mistakes from 40 years ago. Between paint apps , packaging , repacks ,repaints and lack of figures the fans want / need. Does Hasbro care about TVC anymore ? Nick as always awesome review keep them coming.
Really hoping this one doesn't sell out before the New Year. Its too close to Christmas to be buying myself things. But I love weathering SW props and this would be a fun one to do. I just picked the BIG Falcon a few weeks back (not the Galaxys Edge) and its in desperate need of some weathering and a wash too..
Lazy on Hasbro’s side, could have sold more I’m sure if there was weathering. It was a pass for me because it was too clean, cheers Nick and we should expect more from Hasbro especially when it comes to vehicles
@@OnlyOneKenobi it’s disappointing for sure when you also add the fact that TVC for the most part is for adult collectors and Hasbro would be able to pass a clean vehicle for a Child’s toy but us as adult collectors they should know we would expect a little more attention to detail with just a slight wash like you mentioned. That’s not asking too much and I wound pay a bit more if that’s what it takes to get some weathering! Don’t get me started Lol 😂
I liked the design, loved the landing pads and turbine engines, but agree it’s way too clean, specially compared to recent vehicles. The music you used, it’s killing me, I know I know it but can’t place it… Tron?
i love your videos bro i agree totally about the weathering - looks like a 10 year olds toy, not an adult collector piece, totally agree but bruh, it is what it is, never expect hasbro to deliver, i think they are a great example of believing folks will buy whatever they put out there and not worrying too much about quality, enhancements, improvements watch some youtube videos about weathering, model planes, model trains etc. get a beginner's level of skills. a few simple steps would help the appearance a lot. great tool to have in your kit you could go as heavy or light as you want with it but i'm more disappointed with the windscreen not shutting down flush like i said love your videos and i thought your impressions were pretty great man! will be watching! thanks for all the videos!
I would have much rather had the pilot included with the vehicle and the droid sold separately. I would have bought several droids but only buying the one pilot for this vehicle. How much does it cost to weather the vehicle anyway? At this price point it couldn’t be that much more and I personally would’ve paid an extra dollar for it.
Let's be realistic. Even modern jets in our world that come off assembly lines and start flying within the next few days already have grim and weathered look from the elements. So this is not acceptable. Lucasfilm must be telling us that it was the 1st day the E-Wing came out to fly in Ashoka. Ridiculous. If you watch the scenes closely, the E-Wing has some weathering already. Only excuse I can think of it's Hasbro MO of cost cutting when it comes to deco paint. But I digress, the vehicle and droid are amazing nonetheless.
I have to say, ship wise, it does look very good. But paint app wise.....it is very poor. I can't get why Hadbro hasn't weathered this vehicle. They seem very sloppy lately with the paint apps, whether it's figures or vehicles. I don't buy the " it was peace time" argument for it not looking dirty and used.
The cloud car is completely different when there wasn't many other options and the obvious options already got made at that time when it was out, and it doesn't have "ive been in cannon for years" on the box it says Ashoka and has a scene specific background, you don't even have the Sabine with long hair and bike to even make a diorama from the scene, its just a weird pick, if you're happy with it thats cool, but as someone who started collecting tvc based around mando and the other shows even i dont want this in my collection cause it goes with noting for me, maybe it will go beside an xwing in your collections from an imaginary scene.
@trooperwolfie im not either which is why "i just dont see the point of it" thats not in anyway me saying "DONT BUY THIS" and i dont see why people arw taking it that way 🤷♂️

I am seriously concerned about The Ghost and the Cantina due to paint apps.
@@midknighthour24
Don t be, received my Ghost and is top level weathering
The card back under the Droid shows slight weathering so they should have done it to the ship
Nice. I picked up the E-wing when the Disney store was having sales. I like it. Good but not great.
A wash with games workshop nuln oil should do the trick
KE4-NA should have had a vac-metal chromed head like the original Kenner toy but I thought they should have done that in the show too!
The good news is an acrylic wash is very very simple to apply yourself and instantly improves it to next level. And if you don’t like it, it’s easy to remove with water or windex.
I'm glad that I passed on the e-wing I didn't like it when I first saw it ships are suppose to look used whether in battle or just flying around
Spot on review this Nick it’s really annoyed me as well it looks just like the hasbro nurf range look like a toy rather than and adult collector lines
