Creator of the Color Cube here! 👋 Thank you so much for this amazing video.i had an influx of sales over the weekend and didn’t know why, until one of your amazing fans left me a comment and mentioned your video. I’ve been curious about seeing the Color Cube used for miniatures, but haven’t seen anyone use it until now. I loved the results! All of your extra tips were amazing. I’ll be sharing your video with my audience too- and please reach out about becoming an affiliate so your fans can support you while purchasing😊
Alright. I'll admit it. I was ready to be an asshole. In my mind, I was ready to write off this product and video completely. And, I was wrong. I have a huge love of colors. I love them so much. I think of color schemes in my free time. I have spend hundreds of hours of my life looking into things like the advanced mechanisms of color theory and physics, looking into color inspirations, etc. Colors are my greatest strength. And like, even then, I have thousands of pictures saved that I have swatched myself. I have no less than three add ons for my browser that can get color info on any page or image I'm looking at. And like, thats so much work! Why *wouldn't* someone need a faster and more efficient way to understand color and how it looks? Thats so smart and practical. It gives so much knowledge so quickly. And its accessible! Just because I am a color fanatic who can think of these things, doesn't mean that I don't basically do this exact thing the hard way all the time. I'm sure this product was made out of the same love of colors and beautiful schemes that I have. And on that merit, I will probably be buying it. Thanks for making it :)
Love the idea behind the color cubes, and the end model looks awesome. I'd love to see this become a series where you take a model from your pile of shame, generate a random number, and then paint it using the scheme from that color cube card - I think watching you work through those challenges could be really interesting.
The “shield towel” is inspired by Ancient Greek shields that sometimes had a cloth hanging down to help catch up arrows that would otherwise hit the soldier’s feet.
And it was used a lot in medieval time also. In chivalry time there was a lot of dueling rules and a good one was that when the weather was very hot, your opponent would be sweating a lot so you could help him by gently rubbing their face with your shield.
We did that in paint ball. Hang a towel from your belt and if a paint ball hit it, it wouldn't burst and didn't count as being a hit. Also you didn't get hit in the nuts.
You're right, this was a super fun episode. Next step: choose a model, use random number generator to select one of the colour cube cards, and go hard with painting that scheme.
I was just about to suggest the same thing! I really enjoyed the 3 colour roulette video and have been wishing for something like it again. Pick a random model from the pile of shame and a random colour scheme from the cubes and see what you can do with it :D Bonus points if the model is a big vehicle.
I really like this idea and went ahead and ordered the entire suite. I tried this with things like HomeDepot paint swatches but it didn't really push very many different colors. I really like this @ninjon thank you for sharing.
These color cubes and the PDF versions, the color catalogs, are produced by fellow TH-camr Sarah Renae Clark! She does 2D art focusing on mostly colored pencils, with a mix of coloring books and original art. If you like these cubes I highly recommend checking out her channel. The first thing I do when starting a new mini is check the PDFs for color inspiration, I've found them extremely helpful.
Whilst your videos definitely aren't stale, this still somehkw felt refreshing mate. You're absolutely right about how the model didn't look like one of yours, but it was great to see you paint in a new way with different colours. It also felt really achievable for a normal painter like me - using colours in this way.
Great video Jon!! This same concept is why I started the 4 color challenge! I’ve had so many community members report back about how a limited palette can inspire so much flexibility in a paint job, and you have built in harmony since any blends you create will be in the same families. As a neat side effect, the 4 color challenge has become a really exciting stream segment! This paint job is gorgeous as usual, and your description and demonstration is awesome.
My wife has the color cubes for her studio and they are a great resource! It’s fun to occasionally grab a card at random and try using a color combination that I may not have picked for myself.
It's completely unnecessary if you'll just put in a lil effort. Ya gotta stop the spoon feeding cycle. If you require that level of hand holding you might as well just have someone else paint it.
@@jc7997aj it’s a learning tool, surely? I’ve been painting for around 10 months and colour theory is a major weakness for me, and this colour system looks great.

I just got my Cube in the mail today! I love it! It’s really going to help me pick some cool color schemes that I know I NEVER would have thought of. Thanks for the great review! 🙂
I have the cubes. Have always loved colours and colour schemes. What I didn’t think to do was introduce them to my son who is on holiday in England at the moment and has planned his trip to Warhammer World !
I've had this colour cube on my wishlist for a while thinking about its potential for colour schemes. So glad you've gone through and confirmed its utility. Love your content John 💕
whenever I'm in a drawing rut I'd do a 'palette' challenge, basically limiting and trying new colors like this. I've gone through so many now I've used up most of the palettes associated with the challenge haha...needless to say, this excites me SO much! I already know how immensely helpful resources like this can be, and I can't wait to draw more inspiration from it. Cool to see it applied to mini painting here!
I am a card maker and love Sarah’s Color Cubes! She shared this video and I popped over to check it out and wow! Never knew much about miniature painting, you did a fantastic job and the colors are perfect! Of course now my feeds will be miniatures, but I digress LOL! Well done!
Shield towels were developed around 260 b.c.e as a way to let your enemies wipe the sweat away from their face during a particularly long and hot battle.
I'm fairly sure that you can find similar solutions with color swatches via free apps or browser, but I do enjoy the restrictions of it being a physical product. Both for the limited options but also cause you can see how the colors react to your lights. Apps and such often have a good idea at the center but have to cram in so many other features and options that it just paralyses me with choices. Not sure how much I'd actually use this product but I really like it. Also love that the color-codes are on the back!
I gotta admit, coming into this video I was like, "Oh okay basic color theory" but these cubes are actually pretty awesome and that mini looks great. I'm most surprised by the yellow / red for the skintone reading SO WELL. I would not have thought we could go from mustard-yellow to amazing looking skin.
That colors scheme looks great! I've had those cubes for about a year now and they have been very helpful. The companion PDF files allow you to find scheme cards that work with a single color you may already have in mind too.
Oh that's awesome! I can imagine having that tie in would be really helpful, especially in situations like having a specific chapter colour but wanting to play with colour on the rest of the model, or if you have a paint colour you really want to find good harmonies with
I find extreme value in this sort of thing. Color harmonies are sort of hard to grasp, but this feels like a real wealth of value broken down into a digestable way...its almost like a course in color theory but in like... well like math cards but its paint swatches. My imagination is like a turned over kickstart motorcycle. Takes a lot of effort to get it off the ground, and even then you gotta bloody beat the bastard before it even tries to turn over. To be 100% honest, you do not need to acquire these. You can open up open source documents with images from designers with a similar sort of taste and understanding and eye droper them over as reference material...it may even be 100% legal as its education purposes. Fair use. That said, your display settings/ color accuracy probably isn't near as accurate.

I arrived because of Sarah as well (love her!). This is a fabulous use for the cards (which I own and love), as color selection for all kinds of things can be a pain. These cubes really help. Ninjon's video was wonderful to watch, and he is a fabulous painter!! Just wow. So interesting to watch all of the details he put into the figure. Happy I watched this and am off to subscribe! (Though the cat parts at the end were hilarious - loved them!!)
Basically Adobe provides tools to extract the key colors of an artwork or scene you like and shows them as a color palette. This is basically used for color grading footage - but it should work also in the exact same way for miniature painting with something like the color Cubes that provide them.
Appreciate you highlighting these color cubes - scooped up a set myself as did a buddy of mine. Fantastic value for all that you get. Also want to join the chorus saying it would make a good series - pick a card, pick a mini, and go!
Great idea for a video. I like that the cards have examples of the scheme to show how it works in real-life objects so you know how punchy the more vibrant colors will be.
Was thinking the exact same thing! Definitely love that instead of only the colors like a regular swatch card, it includes a real-life object so you can actually see an item using the colors. It really helps with the visualization. I have these cubes and love them (though I use them for books and not minis). Fabulous video. So wonderful at the painting, including doing shadows, etc.
You should have set up an affiliate account with them.. I would have never known I wanted this, but it checks both my mini painting boxes and my wife's interior decorating box. It's quite affordable too.

I really, really like that colour scheme. Internal ADHD single use hobby tool me has awoken from it's slumber, and wishes to have the colour cube. It's now justifying it by pointing out that I'm going to be painting my new home in a month of two, so....TO THE SEARCH ENGINE! Thanks for the video Jon.
This is so cool! Thanks for sharing. This is especially great for those of us without any formal art training and who get analysis paralysis about color schemes
Great video! I've always thought the promotional paint swatch catalogs at hardware stores are great for this kind of thing, but those cubes look so good I've just ordered them.
Fun fact: The maker of the color cube is a youtuber herself. She is very fun to watch :> Also nice use and demonstration of the color cube. I am still going back and forth trying to decide to buy it or not. And of course the paint job looks really good!
Great video! Yellow and orange as themes are colors I hate using because I have a hard time wrapping my head around how to use them properly. I'm getting a set of cubes now to break out of my comfort zone!
I actually got the color cube from an insta recommendation in the past and have been holding off until i get more funds, but i'm happy to hear that there's been others that's seen it and is using it to great effect so far!
Didn't think I'd be buying a colour cube today but there we go.... Loved the video, and as others have mentioned - would love to see a mini-series of these colour cube minis! Maybe even trying a few different minis from the same sets, with wildly different schemes?
This is the hardest part for me as well, how to come up with my own unique style and color pallet, I'll definitely look into those color cubes for inspiration. Awesome video @Ninjon.
Thanks for bring this to my attention ninjon. After about 3 months of painters block, i just ordered a colour cube hoping it will help me get back into painting my Mini's again. I really miss painting and need to get my mojo back.
@@etcktryd hey mate thanks 🙏 I picked up the first cube and it did help me paint a space marine in some really cool colours. Now working on my old world dwarfs again. It was just what I needed to help get me going again.
This would be a fun way to play a game with your painterly friends. Pick a card at random, then give it to them. They have to come back in a week or a month with a painted mini using only those colors
So color theory is fun and something like this definitely adds accessibility to color theory. I prefer digital because I don't have the space but there are tons of palette pickers out there so it's great that you are bringing attention to that.
Amazing scheme, thanks for showing it, Having options is not bad if You don't sink on them and You didn't Sunk on the Cube, You Used as a New tool and went full on gears, that created something Great! so thanks Again!
Excellent video! Definitely one of the most overlooked time sinks in mini painting is color selection, and also something that causes disappointment (when you don't do a test model and don't have a jiving scheme).
Love the color scheme and idea. You can find similar catalogs that are free at your builder supply big box store. Not as many color schemes in those catalogs but also not a place I'd ever considered looking for a miniature color scheme. Thanks for the great video and the 80s chia pet commercial.
Great job! Using color swatches is a nice idea! I've painted Darkoath warband from Warcry using limited palette of colors, but playing around with different skintones. That was only detour from my limited palette of half a dozen colors. They turned out nicely (at least for my skill level)!
I got to say that your dog is so beautiful, and looks really healthy and happy :) I admire it deeply as a dog owner myself :) Loving our furbabies is another level of love :)
I already have the colour cubes for adults colouring however I told my partner he could use them for model painting and he didn't believe me well you just proved he can!
LOVE seeing your comment and it made me chuckle! I use them for coloring as well and came here from Sarah's emialed link. Was soooo cool seeing the painting in this video. Such skill. And what a great use of the cubes. Hope your partner gives them a try. 🙂
After seeing his setup and how in depth things can get to achieve this quality I have decided I much prefer watching people paint minis than painting minis. What a feat it is!
I have the color cubes from another hobby (actual painting) thinking they would help me come up with interesting limited palettes to get better at color theory and value studies. I have to say they are very handy.
Wow that's really useful. Especially as a new painter I'm just stuck doing boring box art colour schemes. I reckon the sheild cloth is for wiping the blood from his ax and/or face?
Wow. That's insane how well this mini came out using one of those cards. Far more dynamic and interesting than the default paintjobs pictured. I mean, this looks really freakin good.
I have these and love them, especially because color choices are tough for me, too (even when I was using a color wheel before these cards). When you do start trying some new schemes, being able to see a real-life object using that scheme should also help give you confidence with the choices you make. But hey, worst case, repaint! Good luck! :-)

I've got the cubes and love them. Hope they help you get past your painters block and get your mojo back! Good luck!
@@etcktryd hey mate thanks 🙏
I picked up the first cube and it did help me paint a space marine in some really cool colours. Now working on my old world dwarfs again. It was just what I needed to help get me going again.
You, and Sergio Calvo... Man. The two of you are my favorite painters. I enjoy the content you make. Thanks, man!
This would be a fun way to play a game with your painterly friends.
Pick a card at random, then give it to them. They have to come back in a week or a month with a painted mini using only those colors
I have a Color Index book that I often go to for inspiration. I've not used it yet for mini painting but this is an obvious and great idea. Thanks!
I never comment on TH-cam videos, but I really dig this idea and you’ve executed it superbly. Well done!
So color theory is fun and something like this definitely adds accessibility to color theory. I prefer digital because I don't have the space but there are tons of palette pickers out there so it's great that you are bringing attention to that.
Color scheme looked fantastic on that model. I'm definitely going to buy these cubes.
Found your video via the Sarah Renae Clark shout out, and I must say …This is an awesome video, and I love the way the miniature turned out.
Amazing scheme, thanks for showing it, Having options is not bad if You don't sink on them and You didn't Sunk on the Cube, You Used as a New tool and went full on gears, that created something Great! so thanks Again!
I think this is your best video in a while, and that mini looks amazing! Let’s see more color cube videos!
I have one of those and I love the schemes. I have been using two different schemes for my blood knights.
Love this paintjob! Those skin tones look really awesome and the mini looks so cohesive!
Excellent video! Definitely one of the most overlooked time sinks in mini painting is color selection, and also something that causes disappointment (when you don't do a test model and don't have a jiving scheme).
the model still looks like Ninjon painted it cause the mixing and blending is still amazing
Beautiful model!! Love that color scheme.. Sarah Renae Clark sent me over .. I have never seen your type of art.. so cool.
That mini is fascinating, clearly you got the results you were looking for!
This model came out amaizng and the colour cube is a great idea to try new combos we wouldnt unusual try. Cheers Jon.
Now this is a tool I can get behind. I definitely want to get this down the line so I can try out new color combos. Thanks Jon 👍
Love the color scheme and idea. You can find similar catalogs that are free at your builder supply big box store. Not as many color schemes in those catalogs but also not a place I'd ever considered looking for a miniature color scheme. Thanks for the great video and the 80s chia pet commercial.
And when the 80's montage music kicks in, you know things are really rockin'! Great vid - love the new tools!
Very cool video! And you defonately should make more video's using the cube! It's nice to see your thought proces!
Fantastic video as always. Your work and painting process is always a joy to behold! 😊
I've looked at those a few times but never quite pulled the plug. Now I'm probably gonna do it. Thanks!
Wow, that worked spectacularly in my opinion. Thanks for showing that off.
I hope you make more vids on this. Very cool!
Maybe do a random run. Roll 3 numbers and pick one of the 3 to paint the figure.
Thanks! This video was really inspiring - I'm getting me some of these cubes for my bday :)
I think this adds not just value, but also some hue and saturation!
But yes, I definitely also have problems figuring out color schemes.
Wow that's really useful. Especially as a new painter I'm just stuck doing boring box art colour schemes. I reckon the sheild cloth is for wiping the blood from his ax and/or face?
@ninjon my guess would be the shield cape/towel could be used like a matador to distract and obscure a sword thrust delivered below the shield?
Wow. That's insane how well this mini came out using one of those cards. Far more dynamic and interesting than the default paintjobs pictured. I mean, this looks really freakin good.
This is SUCH a good idea and I think the mini turned out really great!
Awesome video, this color cube is definitely fitted for me, as i am lacking self confidence to try new color scheme
I have these and love them, especially because color choices are tough for me, too (even when I was using a color wheel before these cards). When you do start trying some new schemes, being able to see a real-life object using that scheme should also help give you confidence with the choices you make. But hey, worst case, repaint! Good luck! :-)
i noticed the fun upbeat music in this episode! amazing addition!
Color cube looks like a great tool for some color theory visuals. I might have to look into these cubes.
What a color study tool. These are amazing for me who struggles to imagine color schemes.
I use my color cube all the time! It’s super helpful in choosing a paint scheme.
