I propose a new Army Painter color. Beef Jerky. Made from Raw Umber Very Dark Neutral Shade PC414RU. It's a great shading pigment, a good substitute for black that dries quickly and flows into recesses. Consider it. Could be a hit with Jerky Lovers.
Better Help, the people who sold a bunch of private health data to Facebook and Snapchat. I don't understand why so many creators still take their sponsorship. They are bad people.
This needs to be talked about more. I believe that directing people towards BetterHelp instead of a proper licensed therapist is incredibly dangerous. Betterhelp does not have a solid history or reputation.

Oh, and one trick I have learned after years in a too-small apartment: If you aren't sure about getting rid of something, put it in a box and out of sight. If you need it, it's there. If, after a year, you haven't needed it, then you never did, and away it goes.
That TOTALLY excludes wires, connectors and different plumbing shit. Once you throw it out - you're on a timer and you WILL need what you've just thrown out =)
I've been painting with scale 75 for years and never had an issue with them. I put in some stainless mixing balls and good to go. Each to their own in painting hobbies. I also found some of the best paints I've come across are artist acrylics in tubes by Jo Sonja's. They are excellent for washes, glazes and tints.
I am the faculty advisor for a university student dnd club that started last year that is now wanting to do painting sessions. If you are wanting to get rid of stuff as either a donation or a reasonable price, please let me know. You are one of first people I started following to get me on my painting journey and I thank you for all you do. I am starting to build my collection of pro acryl and I am giving my club my old paints to them to help them out.
GW actually has school programs. I dont know if university level is too high. But atleast for younger ones. Youll get like .... 10 stormaktstiden, 10 primaris, 6 brushes and a dozen paintbottles. For zero dollars. Ofc they want to reel people into the hobby. But still.
What an unfortunate and ignorant belief. You do realize that kind of negativity and bigotry only hurts you right? I am American. I am first and foremost a Christian, a father, a family man, and a business owner last. There are good people and bad people everywhere. America isn’t perfect but we are comprised of the entire world’s population. Hating America is hating the whole free world.
Oh good, I thought my single Scale75 was busted with the jelly consistency, it's all just awkward and bad. Glad to know! I recently bought the $140 set of Fanatic so I gathered up all my dusty GW and Vallejo paints and listed them up on ebay. I think the Vallejo paints should sell soon, the GW paints sold almost instantly. Byebye pots! Be sure to toss Betterhelp in the trash too, where it belongs
Agreed about BetterHelp. I know creators take sponsorships due to the extra $ and making sure the lights can stay on but given how much has come out about BetterHelp, it might be worthwhile for creators to do the research they can about a sponsor before signing a contract. Kind of like when Jon had Established Titles as a sponsor and even used the phrase "You will be a lord/lady", which has since been proven to be factually incorrect.
It was not busted, he just pretends he doesn't know how to use them. You use vortex mixer and do not basecoat with them. They're actually high quality paints used for certain purposes.
@@PrzybyszzMatplanetyexactly scale 75 is my main I have Almost the entire range and really have no idea where the complaints come from. I’ve never found them hard to work with and am not a pro or master by any means. Wet pallet and golden airbrush medium ( for shooting it of course) or golden glaze medium for when you want it thin. Pro tip buy it from Spain and let them ship it to the states it’s a considerable discount than buying in the US. It’ll take about 2 weeks shipping but it’s about 30% cheaper.
Oh thanks the paint gods that someone else noticed this. The confusion that seeing the fluro Proacryl still sitting there had been causing me is so real. I got stuck trying to work it out and couldn’t, came here for a sanity check!
I'm still really happy with how my S75 paints work because I like the matt effect, but I absolutely wouldn't use them instead of my vallejos or APs as a base coat
Yeah I think it would be great to give these paints away to those who could really use it. I’d like them but I’m not that short on cash and I have a good amount of paint already.
Definitely, they need a new home ! I work in youth work and something like this would be a godsend for painting demo sessions 😊 ( Well obviously I cant sadly volunteer to take any of the paints due customs, but hopefully some1 gets some paint ! )
Black metal by scale 75 is one of the best steel/chain mail colours. And I'm really enjoying priming with the Ak interactive dark brown 'duo exo' range. It really goes on smoothly with a brush.
I'm the exact oppsote with S75 iteresting seeing others opinion of them. They are the only paints i can glaze cofidently with. but even with that said, They are not without there flaws as you bring up here, they are hard to use, and very diffrent to everything else on the market in terms of consistency. But if i'm painting something nowadays they are the go to!
I have the full range and some of the paints I despise, any of the brighter blues and yellow for example. But their fuschia and any of their darker tones are amazing, and of course the metallics. They just have a pretty steep learning curve.
I think my experience with them is that they are fantastic layer paints for the way I use them, but they never worked for me as a base coat paint. I still use the leathers and the skin as highlight colours, but tried painting with them while camping on my wet pallet and it was a pretty hard experience that I didn't really enjoy. Still I love using them as a highlight paint, it seems to blend in pretty nicely. Kimeria has also been interesting, and there's certain colours I really like, but I think they don't suit me as a whole. Maybe I need to get better at mixing.
@@collinl5023don’t forget about their fantasy and games range. I have almost the entire range. I really don’t have the complaints others do about them but if always use my mixer every time before I put a drop of paint on the pallet and of course I use mixing balls in all my paints. Worth it buy buy a bag of SS balls. Shop around you can definitely find good deals if you look outside of hobby specific areas for them. Glass beads work well for thin paints like inks and contrast etc… even those still should have some agitation.
I think we just need divide paints for different uses. Divide them into paints for wargames and artistic painting. I love scale 75 for very matt finish and glazes purposes. I'll buy new warpaint fanatics for coverage and speed painting wargames miniatures.
Do you ever use a satin medium to help blend? I love the range too and mainly use water to achieve the blends which I get the effect I desire and complete with a satin spray coat.
As someone who has only dabbled in miniature painting and recently getting back into it, I appreciate your videos. This one was good too as I am slowly working my way to filling in color gaps/replacing old paints I bought over a decade ago. Some paints I used, some are inconsistent, and some have clogged dropper bottles and don't mix well with streaks of partially dry paint in them. Last year I purchased the set of golden high flow fluorescents for fire effects. I also purchased the most wanted speedpaint set to help power through minis for the Skyrim board game. I just purchased my first group of 8 Pro Acryl paints, including their white, and I love the paints. After my first short paint session using them, I took out the brochure and planned my next 8.
John - THANK YOU for this video! You have no idea how long I've been SUFFERING with a severe lack of knowledge when it comes to this subject. Now that I've seen your video, I can confidently say that I am 100% informed on the many aspects and uses of beef jerky. Oh, and the stuff about the paint was neat, too.
I really appreciate a video about products that you have found to be no good. Most influencers are trying to sell us on stuff so it is a breath of fresh air to throw out some crappy products.
I love the Scale 75 range, but I know what you mean about the gel base and odd texture. They just don't thin down well with water. I have had a lot of success using an acrylic retardent. I kinda stumbled upon it by accident when i was looking for a way to paint while I travel without a wet pallet. I love the smoothness and the coverage and the range of colors, but it is certainly extra work and an aquired taste. If you them already and are trying to make them work I'd suggest either the AK or Scale 75 acrylic retardant before tossing them out.
It made me so happy that you didnt get rid of your so flat paints. After you made your video on them ages ago I have used the primary color set from so flat exclusively.
Vallejo xpress paints are my favorite in the speed paint area. I recommend them over army painter and citadel. And after the second wave they have a good selection of colors.
I don't suppose at some point you could do a video where you go through all the paint ranges and pick out some of your favorite must-have paints out of it. Makes it easier for those of us that don't buy the entire set to just buy a few
You have all the info. Make a choose. Look at your models and think of the color scheme you want. Then buy army speed 2.0 or vellejo express in the colors you want for your army. If your are doing one offs or more intricate models in small quantities then consider some inks and oils in those same ranges.
I bought the whole vallejo xpress line and i love them. They are my favorite speed paints. I was considering the full warcolours line as my next big purchase...
@chrisrains6470 I really like vince vinturella and his tutorials and he really likes them. He does have a different style than most, he likes glazes and filters. War colors more translucent formula seems to work for this style. I think I'll end up going with the new line from army painter for my next purchase now.
Scale 75 is a tricky beast. Most colors do indeed suck at base coating, but I keep mine around for layering. It's really easy to get them into a "glayer" type consistency, where they have more coverage than a glaze but blend really effortlessly when layering. It's hard to explain but I haven't found another range that behaves this way. Along with the leather colors Jon mentioned, their reds are some of my favorites to work with. It's weird how Vallejo was once so popular, but now they're turning into this brand that's just kinda... there. They aren't bad at all, but they don't seem to do anything better than their AK, Pro Acryl, or Army Painter counterparts can do. We're spoiled for choice now and Vallejo is just slowly falling to the wayside it seems like. It's also refreshing to see someone call out Kimera. It's marketed as this super boutique brand but I've never particularly enjoyed using mine (aside from the Red). I had the same reaction when they started selling color blends and wondered why they were going against their one unique aspect of having single pigment paints. I bought the first set a few years ago but have no intention to expand on that.
I love my S75 paints but I don't reach for them for brush painting for the reasons he mentioned in the video. I LOVE them for airbrushing though. I think they thin down beautifully and really enjoy them for that.
Are Scale 75 and the Fantasy and Games range the same as far as how they behave? I only have a handful of Fantasy and Games and I don't have any of the issues people are describing - they're like a thicker Pro Acryl for me only they last longer on the wet palette.
I think Vallejo has become the "Ol' Reliable" of miniature painting like Army Painter is for Hobby Supplies. I tend reach for their Effects Paints like Rust and the Terrain paste, and the Model Color paints I have from tend to get along with my few bottles of Scale 75. They're always there, not promising you the world but getting the job done each time you use them....assuming you can find most colors. I swear it's easier prospecting for gold than it is finding Xpress or the new Game Color ranges most days.
Vallejo paints are still the best for someone new to miniature painting. They aren't super thin like reaper, they aren't super thick like s75, they mostly cover well, have lots of options. They wet blend, they can dilute to a glaze easily... Whatever characteristics you are evaluating, VMC comes in at "medium". When you find yourself developing a style and technique you'll gravitate towards different ranges that compliment it.
I feel completely different with s75. My painting became SO much better once I started to glaze with S75. Something just clicked. I just don't use them for base layers, just for glazes & highlights.
All that means is your are not at his level. With more experience and after using different products you will come to a similar realization as Jon. They work for you because you don’t know any better. You learned to make then function but that doesn’t make them good. Keep exploring.
@@UselesswizardStill being made. But just as back in its early days when it was hard to get, PP has to reorder it in very large quantities so we're between an order right now. LGS just restocked its shelf just a week ago, but because of the aforementioned between orders thing Coal Black is sold out.
Mars orange by any chance? I think they do fine if you have a vortex mixer and a solid minute to use it haha. Caribbean blue and irati green are two s75 colours I struggle to find elsewhere
I think it's funny. My entire paint rage includes the starter fantasy Vallejo range, the Vallejo East Germany range, a few blues and purples. And a pack of six inks which I only really use three of. Every color I create is a combination of these paints. I probably spent more on medium, airbrush thinner, And the airbrush.
The reason why a lot of gamers end up with tons of paints is it makes painting armies easier if you don't have to mix a color over and over again. (Also the greed!)
@@jandrewmore Its why I bought purple, I could get the exact purple hue I wanted with mixing. The problem is that it was so finely tuned that I had to use all of it, otherwise there is a lot of wasted paint to get tot hat exact mixture. Now I only need to mix the royal purple I adore, for important miniatures, rather than Greg the Garlic Farmer with a purple handkerchief.
Vallejo's alwayws been my workhorse. I got my painting start with Dr Faustus's channel, and he was very persuasive in arguing that you don't want a miniature paint that comes with a model line. You want someone whose business is paint - someone who isn't going to change manufacturers because they *are* the manufacturer. Someone whose paints won't disappear because their miniature game went under. Back then, Vallejo was kind of the one big name in that category. With AK and Proacryl, though, there's definitely more competition. My FLGS does have a vallejo rack, but it doesn't always get restocked that frequently, so I find myself going to the AK interactive display more often, lately, when I need to add something new to my paint range.
With scale 75 you MUST have a vortex mixer… then, they’re amazeballs. I’m tripping a bit because homie is swapping them out for AP but hey, you do you!
Gotta say I love Jon’s honesty about his use of paint here. It’s hard to let go, and sometimes you just have to trust yourself, and try something new and different. Great job Ninjon!
I really thought I was going to skip this video because it was going to be a standard paint review episode but the more that I watched, the more I really understood the methodology you were using for reducing the bloat. Now I’ve got something to do this weekend AND I’m glad I’m not alone in my thoughts about Scale75. I want to like them but they’re just more work to use.
I literally just spent 16 minutes watching a guy spring clean his workshop, and for some reason im not mad. Kudos on somehow making mundane nonsense still fun to watch and useful.
This is a great video, I have needed to purge large amounts of my paint collection too. It made me realise how grateful I am for your content. I just wanted you to know that your'e an important part of many people lives.
I just bought the Army Painter Fanatic Complete set a couple days ago, and I've been facing the same conundrum. My collection is far smaller than yours but space is just as precious. Thanks for the video!
I still love the Scale 75 metallics. Necro gold and Black Metal are my top two favorites. I've not found another brand with that smoothness of metallic flakes.
Interesting to see the difference in people's preferences. Between the video and the comments. I have to say, i was surprised to see Scale 75 on the chopping block. They are my go to paints. I prefer the gel medium because my pallette thinner of choice is two parts flow improver and one part scale 75 retarder. This mix with any Scale 75 acrylic paint makes everything from base coats to highlights to blends easier regardless of color used for me
So what I’m getting from you is. IF you buy three products to one, they don’t suck. Did you consider getting a product that works without thinner and retardant?
@@chrisrains6470 regardless of which brand I use the climate where I live causes paint to dry faster than is desirable even on a wet pallette. So I think you took that wrong. The paints themselves are great and I've never had issues achieving the results I wanted. And they are easier to blend than most other brands with the exception of Pro Acryl
honestly i feel like people are giving s75 a hard time. People are so used to acrylic water mediums that they wont take the time and learn how to use the gel medium. Once i started glazing colours with s75, it was honestly hard to go back to using other colours. There is no such thing as a bad tool, just a bad craftsman! (Or in this case, ones who expect a gel medium paint to act like a fluid medium base !) That being said Warpaints fanatic are too expensive for no real reason. Aint nothing wrong with my vallejo range, there's a reason they've been around for over 40 years.
Can I ask for some tips on how to better use S75? Whats a difference one should keep in mind while working with gel base vs classic acrylic medium? I tried them once, and I really did not enjoy painting base coat and layer with them. Probably my technique was wrong, I would love to learn more actually. My friend painted with S75 some Dark Angels, and decided to go back to Vallejo. S75 paints have amazing matt finish, but painting with them was very stressfull for him
@@aalkesandraa use some sort of surfactant/flow improver (I have warcolours too, which is also gel medium and their surfactant makes them behave like normal paints more)
@@aalkesandraa As the Neckbeards used to say, Thin Your Paints. Using a drop or two of water helps break up the thickness and treat them as the next step after the basecoat. Their real strength comes from blending as the other guy says. Basically don't treat them like Citadel or AK Interactive think of SC75 as wanna be Oils and artist grade paint. The only paints in 75 I wouldn't suggest thinning would be the metallics. Metallic paint gets....weird if you thin them out in my personal experience. SC75 really shine when you use them on things like Nighthaunts and models with large areas to paint like wings. Also no shame in using both Vallejo and Scale 75 in the same project, Eclipse Grey is great for shadows and darkening most colors while using Vallejo's Amaranth Red or Dark Vermillion as a basecoat with SC75's Reds tend to make them pop off just right. Hope that helps.
i love scale paints they’ve always worked great for me. but the star of the scale 75 lineup is def their metal paints. but hey i’d take them off your hands if you don’t want them!
Could put the unused ones in a box for say 6 months, if you never open the box for any of them, do a give away and slap a label on the box. I doubt anyone watching your channel would mind getting paints you dont use considering how many you have.
I am reluctant to admit you are right about the s75 and the blended Kimera paints. I still like the single pingment kimera paints, but the red and violet are two of my favourtie paints right now.
One thing to note on Vallejo, check hobby lobby, one of the ones near me sells individual pots and discounted box sets, and i imagine if, we as a hobby put some pressure on cooperate they might even sell more.
I'd be careful though...the one near me insists on pricing them at $5-5.50 which is above MSRP (you can also get them online all over the place for $2.68 a bottle, etc.).
I agree about decanting the Citadel paints to dropper bottles - I've done that once, and I didn't want to do it again... Now when I run out of a Citadel colour, I go straight for AK Interactive counterpart (sometimes it's tricky to get a good match, but it's just time to rip the bandaid off, and gradually get rid of my Citadel paints altogether).
Don’t forget the new two coats line. They were made by one of the best painters Citadel ever lost. They are an exact rip off of the citadel colors. They work better and cost less in a normal sized bottle.
The brands I use most are the ones you put away :) Thanks for the video, very interesting. Looking forward to the “sorry GW, all is forgiven”-video. ;)
If you are in fact getting rid of paints from your shelves, maybe offer them up in a giveaway or a few giveaways to your viewers? This video serves as a warning for the drawbacks but you can give the ability for others to try the paints without spending the money on them.
"I don't use or like these brands, so I'm going to give them to my viewers!" Dude, that just sounds weird. It's like a reverse endorsement or something. Donate them to a school or an art club or something, but not to the people who come here to learn more about wht they _should_ be using, and why.
My only complaint is with the lids. The little flib tab often breaks off the edge, the hinges have been known to fail, and with a few of them, the lid itself has cracked (requiring me to transfer the contents to a dropper bottle) But the paint itself is great.
Scale 75 are not garbage paints by any means. The last thing you should do with them is basecoating, no wonder you ended up frustrated using tool the wrong way. Wet blending, layering and vortex mixer are secret to uncovering Scale 75 beauty.
@PrzybyszzMatplanety Hey Przybyszu! What paints would you recommend for army painting (28-35mm scale). I love sc75 - have only a few colors and used them for wet blending and glayering. I want to buy more as I like them very much - metallics are my go to already. But I heard they are not best fit for basecoating. Is coverage better when you use them through the airbrush? How fantasy line differs from the scalecolor one?
@@ljari1 Hej! If you feel competent enough with an airbrush to basecoat (I certainly do not yet, only priming), they'll work better. You're supposed do do multiple thin coats of paint with airbrush anyway. Fantasy & Games coverage is slightly better than ordinary S75 because they're not purely gel based so they don't appear as goo out of the bottle. They have also more vibrant and interesting colours - I love Huldra Blue, Innsmouth Blue, Merm Green among others - and dry a little more satin compared to ultra matte S75 main line. However, everything from Scale 75 is more or less crappy in coverage department. Even their Instant Color line have certain paints that need 3 to 5 layers in order to achieve what Citadel Contrasts or Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 do after one. This doesn't make them bad paints as this is for purpose, S75 products in general are aimed at more experienced painters who use more advanced techniques (smooth transitions and all that). Also for each S75 paint (main or F&G line) you need at least two steel agitators per bottle and hell of a muscle to properly shake them. For basecoating and general fast army painting I'll propose... Army Painter. Their new Fanatic line is absolutely fantastic for this as they cover so incredibly well - even bright colours like yellow. Now, Fanatic line does have some issues that almost no paid influencers mention. Mainly it's high desaturation of some colours (Fur Brown and Pure Red are actually hues of pink!), additionaly mixing wrong colours desaturates them even more to the point that you can have almost grey paint. I do not know why it is like that, but I think Juan Hidalgo is right suspecting they achieved extreme coverage by adding a lot of cheapest pigment - white. Second issue is mitigated by their flexible triads, first can be worked around by washing or inking surface to increase colour saturation. But if you just basecoat with them, there is no issue at all. Even with that Army Painter Fanatic are the best if we speak about coverage. I actually think basecoating with Fanatics and doing rest of the work with Scale 75 or Fantasy & Games is the way to go. We can talk about other brands that are worth of your attention, like Pro Acryl or AK Interactive (PA if you live in USA or Western Europe, AK if in Central or Eastern - for example Pro Acryl prices in Poland are twice the price of AK and they're the same level of top quality paints) but availability may be the issue. As for metallic paints I would recommend Vallejo Metal Colors (Metal Color, not Vallejo Liquid Metal), they're for airbrushes but you can easily work them with ordinary brush. They cover perfectly, flow like water and are the most metallic paints I've ever seen. Their only weakness is 14 hues of steel & silver, but only one gold and copper. :/ I think supplementing golds and coppers with S75 metallics may be good solution. I generally speak with some experience - I have full S75 F&G, S75 Instant Colors sets, entire S75 metallics sets (gold, steel and copper), AP Fanatic Mega Set, some Pro Acryls, few Vallejo Metal Colors and too much AK paints. If you have any further questions, I'll happily answer.
@@PrzybyszzMatplanety Wow, I didn't expect such a long and elaborate answer. Thank you! Currently, I have a collection of somewhere north of 200 paints-a mix of Citadel, VMC, old VGC, a few P3, and SC. When I do army painting, I tend to basecoat with Citadel Contrast paints and then work only on highlights/layers. So, I guess that would be a viable option for a combo of contrast and SC. What do you think? I wanted to minimize my collection and make space for SC paints :P. So I want to keep paints for basecoating and get rid of anything else. I have an issue with Citadel paints, as their consistency could be more consistent (pun intended). Some are thicker than others. It's also super frustrating to use them with an airbrush. (And I don't like the pots for their diameter; they take up too much space). And to be frank, the best thing about SC is its consistency and longer drying time. It makes wet blending, glazing, and layering much easier (and base coating much more difficult). Thanks so much for your answer :)
If you got to fight and fuck with stuff to make it work, what’s the point of that? That’s why the Army Painter’s previous paint range was shit, it was basically temperamental bad coverage paint that you had to fuck with to get it to work decent-it was trash.
Culled 90% of my Vallejo Game color line. Gave them to a friend whos starting the hobby. Talking over 100 paints. Recently tried Pro Acryl and cannot now look back... they are excellent and i never find myself fighting them which has lead them to be my primary choice. GW i have plenty that ive already decanted into dropper bottles.... However i now never use them... Id rather mix Pro Acryl colors to get what i need. So that may be culled soon too. Metal Color and Game Ink are the only Vallejo ive got left and will never get rid of. Feels nice to have less clutter of unused paint. Funny this vid should come as this all took place recently for myself. Great vid as always Jon!!
It was coincidental that you made this video. I, myself, am swapping out all my Citadel paints and await the arrival of the Two Thin Coats waves 1, 2, and 3. There's been several subjects now that I've dealt with concurrently. I take it as a sign you're more in tune with most hobby painters than most. Art is always great, but optimization and organization are also critical.
I did this last year with the second wave. The standard paints are excellent and the metallics are good, not amazing but better than citadels. I personally prefer citadels washes but I like the pro acryl better than both. The fact that they have reference charts is also mega handy.
@@Chesterbigwigful@Chesterbigwigful I really like the Pro Acryil as well; I just wish they sold a complete set of them. I am sticking with the Citadel Contrasts until they run out. I have the speed paint from Army Painter, but I don't need to use it yet.
I actually started my hobby journey with war machine and using P3 paints. Coal black, sanguine base and sanguine highlight are still my all time favourites.
yeah I'm with you on the Citadel... everyone has been begging them for years to switch over to dropper bottles, which like you I also switched my own as well. TOTAL PITA!!!! I since have gone over to other paint lines as well for the same reason. I love P3 as well and was at a hobby store selling all theirs at discount. I grabbed a bunch. I'm not buying hard into the Army Painter new line yet as I really want to try them out first for a while before I get a pile.
If you absolutely must have a citadel color, just buy the two coats line. Almost identical colors in a normal size bottle at less expense. As far as the army Painter speed paint 2.0 fanatic and their washes, they are all flipping amazing!
I love an honest review of paints. Even if I dont agree with the review, I still appreciate a painter giving honest critique of paints and detailing specifics about why they do and do not work for them. This is more helpful than how to videos to be honest.
One of the online stores I buy from still has them. Wonder if it's really old stock? I only have a few, they remind me of the old citadel paints that came in the same type of bottles with the white lids. I actually assumed they just took over that line when Citadel switched manufacturers.
@@robertashton5005 PP is still in business and still has the paints for sale on their website and I haven't heard they aren't making P3 anymore (I still play Warmachine so see PP news frequently)
Love this vid. 2 thin coats FTW - I was having the exact same anxiety with my citadel paints, half decanted, half not and this just gave me the confidence to bin them. I also love beef jerky but it’s so expensive in the uk and you can only get tiny little bags of it. I used to love serving wherever the US were because you can get massive bags of jerky from the PX for cheaper than a tiny bag in any uk shop.
Make your own bro dirt cheap after the initial investment. Get a meat slicer, grinder, and a dehydrator and you can make all kinds of money saving delicious snacks that are healthy.
Ooof, I'd take those scale 75 off ya hands haha. Jokes aside I was surprised on this as I like them. But my vortex mixer solved the coverage issues for me.
When I see comments like this, I immediately think this is a person that screwed themselves into having to use this product and having to learn how to make it work By purchasing more products. It seems like hubris is getting in the way of intelligence. They are more expensive, they require 2 to 3 additional purchases in the way of shakers, thinners and retardance, and don’t do anything correctly and are no better than other blends that can be mixed with water to work correctly. I think with experience people like you realize it’s not worth the extra hassle and expenditure to get a product to work when there are other products out there there just work.
I don't understand all on video because I'm not english fluent, but Vallejo range get old. (like citadel) new range are better, easier to work with (ak 3rd, ttc, contrast). Vallejo was top tier 10 years ago, but what they do during 10 years ? (Ak and other outsiders work hard)
Well, Vallejo released a new range of Game Color and Xpress Color not so long ago. Ordered a bunch of Xpress bottles and, well, they're quite good, I guess
What I interpreted was that his preferred paints do everything that Vallejo does, and Vallejo offers nothing unique and extra. So they aren’t bad, just don’t stand out enough to keep. I use Vallejo myself for most stuff.

I'm using S75 bottle and artist range as well as kymera. just love them! i will definetely give a try to other ranges too as my workspace will get larger fortunately. love videos like this as it takes some courage to part ways with things that you invested in but still want to test new solutions!

@@flowerknight4879 that's too funny. I mix them with each other a ton, thin them with ease, etc. they are my go to paints, but maybe I got a good batch? 🤷
@@Dezkoiisn’t gouache the mutant love child of acrylic and water color paint ? I have some and experimented with them thinking they might be a godsend for wet blending but didn’t find the particularly suited for mini painting. Might be better used on canvas.
I just have the base set. But seeing them ditched broke my heart because I as a beginner slowly upping my game to intermediate level got into them thinking I am getting an upgrade and so I ditched all of my previous paints 😁. I'm not sorry about those (a lot of old army painter crap and some inconsistent old vallejo game colors). But now I wish I would get AK 3rd gen instead.
Thanks for this. I've been doing the same lately. And it's nice to hear someone give the same opinion of Scale75 that I've developed. I ended up moving all but the base S75 metallics into my side storage (it's there if I need it, but I don't need pink metallic paint readily at hand.) After their "Minipedia" kickstarter that ended up being a high-priced, backer-funded advertisement for Scale75, I've lost my love of the company. Likewise my avoidance of all things Games Workshop/Citadel, despite having spent most of the 90s living the GW lifestyle. They've just become too skeezy a company for me to want to do business with them. Contrast paints are the only GW product I still own, and I've mostly switched over the Army Painter Speed Paints for that role. The only reason the GW pots are still on my paint rack is that I don't have anything else that fits in that particular size of hole (but now I'll be checking my inks...) Remaining: - The base metallics from Scale75 (golds, silvers, brasses, bronzes.) - Army Painter Speed Paints - A few specialty paints (GSW's Max Darth black paint (worth a look), GSW's chrome, some mediums, some custom thinning mixes, some Vallejo washes.) - A mix of regular Reaper and Vallejo paints Side storage: - Various effects paints - Scale75 colored metallics
So I had the exact same problem when I first tried them. I think the mixing is really understated, you have to use agitators and use a vortex mixer. My first lot let me down because they'd been on the shelf so long theyd separated. I use them all the time and none are goopyor streaky
I haven't tried their base range, but I do quite like their Artist Color series, they need more thinning than most hobby paints since they're heavy body acrylics, but they are nice and matte, and cover fairly well.
So I do not like the scale 75 metallics. I don't know if it's something I am doing wrong, so in comparison to the Vallejo metal colors, you know they are brush ones, I've not had a good experience. They leave brush strokes they're really thick. And a lot of the colors end up looking just the same with like varying degrees. Any tips would be appreciated
For what it's worth, as a novice painter I absolutely love the Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 line. Especially with my standard Imperial Guard infantry dudes that have a lot of lines and folds and other surface details, I get some awesome shading and detail highlights in a way that I would never be able to replicate by hand at this stage. I think they're fantastic tools for folks like me that are just starting out.
Maybe you could do a giveaway of your old paints to a new painter? I’m sure someone would be thrilled to have them. Also, as a public service announcement: Beef Jerky is generally not good for dogs. The salt content can be really bad for them, along with spices like onion and garlic.
Looking forward to your video next year where you throw away the new AP Fanatics because they're desaturated and turn gray when you mix them, and the AP Speedpaints because of they way they sometimes crack. Yeah AP stans, I know, I know, those are features, not bugs. My bad. I'm sure Speedpaints 3.0 will be a huge improvement.
I mean, you were talking trash about a company that actually listens to its customers and improves. You can’t say that about any of the other paint line manufactures except for maybe two thin coats coming up.
I had the same experience with Scale 75, but I ended up keeping most of their flesh tones along with the metallics just because they're good enough colors to be worth the hassle. African Shadow, you're my best friend
probably the only mini painting youtuber i would trust to be fair in this kind of video, since all the others you know have made sponsored videos on every brand.
Hope you didn't actually throw them out as these would be infinitely valuable to many starting painters. But yeah in the last few years there's been a lot of new paint ranges, most of which are worthy. Not to mention doubling the paint count when considering Contrast and Air Brush variants.
He does not care who sponsors him. He does not even research the companies. That is up to us to figure out. He takes a look at who is offering the most money and sells a fake land dead no problem
The only thing I'll say is that MOST commercially available jerkies, are artificially weight boosted by the addition of sugar. That's why I eat biltong style jerky. Otherwise, love the inter video skit. XD
I replaced my Citadel and Reaper hodgepodge with Pro Acryl and haven't looked back. Picked up Speed-paint 2.0 and am slowly phasing out my Contrast rack. I'm not saying I'll never pick up another paint...but for now I'm enjoying the relative simplicity.
Honestly, this is a good one to see. My collection of paints is not nearly as extensive as yours, but I still have trouble throwing away paints that I know I'm not going to use because I don't like them but I hate the idea of wasting them. Honestly, Vallejo is high up on that list. I have a couple colors of theirs which I use, but I feel like the rest are easily replaced at a lower price and similar quality with something you can buy in the US, like the pro acril line. Love those paints.
This video inspires me. I've been stuck with Citadel paints for years because I have a whole bunch of 'recipes' that I use that are very convenient to use (mostly when painting armies). Now, that the two thin coats colors, which are practically identical finally exist, I think I will finally slowly replace the entire Citadel range.
I always love hearing praise for P3. They were how i got my start, i personally love the pots, and despite being 10+ years old when i returned to hobbying in, theyre still creamy as ever. I cant find them either and I really hope theyre not gone. I still think about when PP made some serious headway in being a competitor to GW.
It's one of the things I think of when people tell me somehot new model or paint range is going to take GW out. Like Confrontation and Warmachine, from an outsider's perspective, looked like they had a chance but the former is dead and the later seems a pale shadow of itself. Maybe it's more popular than I know?
Never really understood why people buy hundreds of bottles of paints. For starters, there aren't that many pigments in existence, so if you own hundreds of bottles, you've got some redundancies. And paint does get old. Even if you think the bottle is perfectly sealed, it's going to change a tiny bit over the years.
I mean, you could have offered us some beef jerky... excited and happy to find our way on your shelves!
He has the whole ak set and all contrast....so your paints will go the scale way
I propose a new Army Painter color. Beef Jerky. Made from Raw Umber Very Dark Neutral Shade PC414RU. It's a great shading pigment, a good substitute for black that dries quickly and flows into recesses. Consider it. Could be a hit with Jerky Lovers.

Black metal by scale 75 is one of the best steel/chain mail colours. And I'm really enjoying priming with the Ak interactive dark brown 'duo exo' range. It really goes on smoothly with a brush.
I agree - best I have used compared to a few other paint lines, too.
Golden makes a bunch of great products.
I also have some of their fluros. Very impressive!
I love the P3 paint too! Pro Acryl i feel is really close to it so now get a lot of that paint.
I would also like to see that.
I have yet to hear anything good about war colors that was not a paid add.
@chrisrains6470 I really like vince vinturella and his tutorials and he really likes them. He does have a different style than most, he likes glazes and filters. War colors more translucent formula seems to work for this style. I think I'll end up going with the new line from army painter for my next purchase now.
by far one of the most useful videos I've seen when helping select different ranges and what colors form the ranges.
Ironically enough the best Kimera product is the flesh set from the last kickstarter. It's even better than the fairy flesh set.
That P3 Coal Black is just amazing
I have a few old p3's that i'm seriously stingy with
Necrotite Green is also a really good one from that range. Too bad PP is run by idiots.
Just a note that if P3 isn't being manufactured anymore, Vallejo Model Color Dark Sea Blue is a color match for P3 Coal Black.
@@UselesswizardStill being made. But just as back in its early days when it was hard to get, PP has to reorder it in very large quantities so we're between an order right now. LGS just restocked its shelf just a week ago, but because of the aforementioned between orders thing Coal Black is sold out.
I can't speak for all of Scale 75 but they have an orange that I have absolutely been loving!
ScaleColour Artist range is amazing. Out of the tube perfect.

(Or in this case, ones who expect a gel medium paint to act like a fluid medium base !)
That being said Warpaints fanatic are too expensive for no real reason.

@@oskar6661 I'll never shop at Hobby Lobby because I don't support Homophobic Antiquities Thieves.
don't buy from hobby lobby, stolen antiquities dealers
I agree about decanting the Citadel paints to dropper bottles - I've done that once, and I didn't want to do it again... Now when I run out of a Citadel colour, I go straight for AK Interactive counterpart (sometimes it's tricky to get a good match, but it's just time to rip the bandaid off, and gradually get rid of my Citadel paints altogether).
Don’t forget the new two coats line. They were made by one of the best painters Citadel ever lost. They are an exact rip off of the citadel colors. They work better and cost less in a normal sized bottle.
I love the scale 75 range, y'all are nuts.
The brands I use most are the ones you put away :)
Thanks for the video, very interesting.
I agree. I came to the comments to say so 😊
I don't think Jon is getting rid of them. He seems to just put them in another place harder to reach, and is thus going to use them far less often.
"I don't use or like these brands, so I'm going to give them to my viewers!" Dude, that just sounds weird. It's like a reverse endorsement or something.
Donate them to a school or an art club or something, but not to the people who come here to learn more about wht they _should_ be using, and why.
@@HeadHunterSix It's because some of these things are not objectively bad paints and are, in fact, extremely good if they fit your style.
With you on the P3. Amazing paints with some unique colours. I don't mind the pots either, they dont clog like the citadel rubbish.
My only complaint is with the lids. The little flib tab often breaks off the edge, the hinges have been known to fail, and with a few of them, the lid itself has cracked (requiring me to transfer the contents to a dropper bottle)
But the paint itself is great.
Scale 75 are not garbage paints by any means. The last thing you should do with them is basecoating, no wonder you ended up frustrated using tool the wrong way. Wet blending, layering and vortex mixer are secret to uncovering Scale 75 beauty.
Yup totally agree!
Liked this just because you binned the Crapadel paints!
I think Scale75 make good mixes with contrast medium or newsh because of that weird consistency and coverage
I never swapped the bottles ... but as each colour ran out I xhanged ot with other brands . Im down to about 25 bottles now.
Good stuff
If you absolutely must have a citadel color, just buy the two coats line. Almost identical colors in a normal size bottle at less expense. As far as the army Painter speed paint 2.0 fanatic and their washes, they are all flipping amazing!
I have quite a bit of two thin… I’m waiting on the fanatic for a bit as I have a huge line of paints now as it is. I’m always up to trying new though.
I love an honest review of paints. Even if I dont agree with the review, I still appreciate a painter giving honest critique of paints and detailing specifics about why they do and do not work for them. This is more helpful than how to videos to be honest.
The takeaway: Get yourself some beef jerky.
actually really sad about the PP paints though. Love them.
Still would love to have Coal Black.
I use Morrow White religiously for White. And on the other hand, I can apply Khador Red in five out of the pot coats and still see bleedthrough
I see them on eBay all the time for sale. Not sure if the line is disappearing or not but there’s good deals out there.
I use a vortex mixer too. I wonder if this is why i like them too.
@@matt6387 yeah I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Cuz without the mixer I see what he is talking about
@@adampeterson9171 i got them long after i got my mixer that must be why i am confused by it.
@@chrisrains6470 they don’t need retardant at all.
I really like the AK 3rd gen leather set. I’ve made some really great distressed leather cloaks with them
suprised that you got rid of the Vallejo paints, everyone seems to love them. But totally understandable reason.
@@blackenthyname9903 Yes only model color get old ( or old game color if you still have it) new range is cool ( even if ak is better for classical acrylics, but their "ak contrast" are bad)
@@azecece1 Vallejo has completely redone the Game Color line, and has announced a new version of the Model Color line. I've got the new game color and it's very nice, but the old game color was as well.
I designed a super compact 3D-printed Pro Acryl dropper rack that's free-standing. I have an 8x8 version on my desk. I also have a 10x10 that fits Army Painter droppers. They're under 12" wide and 12" tall. I should probably start selling these on my etsy.
instead of throwing them away, give them to some people instead.
I'm used to paint with colour mixing so have very few paints on my desk. I'm using S75 bottle and artist range as well as kymera. just love them! i will definetely give a try to other ranges too as my workspace will get larger fortunately. love videos like this as it takes some courage to part ways with things that you invested in but still want to test new solutions!
Vallejos are valuable, they are solid paints, don't dump them in the trash
Wow, a couple of hours ago, Scott on the Miniac channel was talking about minis he hadn't finished painting, and now Jon here is clearing out his paint racks. Talk about cathartic!

The Kimera was crazy to me. I use it all the time and I love them
I bought the base set and I actually hate them 😂 really hard to use for no discernible benefits
When I use them I love them, never had any of the issues Ninjon is describing - mine arrived well mixed and have stayed that way.
P3 is still in production. My FLGS carries them and they’re always stocked. My go to are actually P3, S75’s Fantasy range and Proacryl.
wow quick timing
The only reason the GW pots are still on my paint rack is that I don't have anything else that fits in that particular size of hole (but now I'll be checking my inks...)
Remaining:
- The base metallics from Scale75 (golds, silvers, brasses, bronzes.)
- Army Painter Speed Paints
- A few specialty paints (GSW's Max Darth black paint (worth a look), GSW's chrome, some mediums, some custom thinning mixes, some Vallejo washes.)
- A mix of regular Reaper and Vallejo paints
Side storage:
- Various effects paints
- Scale75 colored metallics
Totally with you on the Scale 75 paints. Love the metallics. The other colors are just goopy and streaky no matter how much I mixed them.
Only used the metallics so far and they are brill... But so are the classic Gamecraft ones. Seems good metallics are quite easy to make.
In my experience, the scale 75 paints are awful for basecoating. But they are great for glazing.
Mine is mostly Citadel paints but when they are gone I am just replacing them with the TTC range. I also love the old Vallejo game range and p3.
Scott and Jon be like:
You go first!
No you!
No you, I ensist!!!
I use scare75 alot, as well as kimera, speedpaints, etc. I get it. You have ALOT and I mean ALOT of paints
AP speedpaints are the only reason I have painted minis. It is talent in a bottle.
Maybe you could do a giveaway of your old paints to a new painter? I’m sure someone would be thrilled to have them.
Also, as a public service announcement: Beef Jerky is generally not good for dogs. The salt content can be really bad for them, along with spices like onion and garlic.
Take ALL the banished paints and mix them together into one, unholy color. Then use it to paint something lol
lol it would be grey.
Thank you, Ninjon, for the incredible breakdown on the benefits of beef jerky.
I sold my whole Scale 75 set last year as I just didn't like them at all. I feel better that I'm not the only one who has felt the same way.
probably the only mini painting youtuber i would trust to be fair in this kind of video, since all the others you know have made sponsored videos on every brand.
Hope you didn't actually throw them out as these would be infinitely valuable to many starting painters.
But yeah in the last few years there's been a lot of new paint ranges, most of which are worthy. Not to mention doubling the paint count when considering Contrast and Air Brush variants.
I adore scale 75 paints, send them over to a loving home. I dare you. :D
You might want to reconsider dropping this sponsor while you are at it.
Why?

I will take all of those paints. Some of those I cannot find at any hobby shop.
The only thing I'll say is that MOST commercially available jerkies, are artificially weight boosted by the addition of sugar. That's why I eat biltong style jerky. Otherwise, love the inter video skit. XD
Man, this is EXACTLY what i needed. I am in same boat with my hobby space and paints. Been debating on what goes and stays. THANK YOU!!
I’ve slowly been replacing my citadel with Vallejo and speedpaints
