Many students have asked me to recommend Chinese TV series and Movies to improve their Chinese learning level. But the problem is most of the Chinese drama are a bit boring and too dramatic that you won't have the motivation to keep watching. In this video, I have recommended three relatively new Chinese TV series that are actually really FUN to watch, so you can practice listening and know more about Chinese culture as well as having fun watching the show.
    These three shows are:
    0:52《欢乐颂 Ode to Joy》
    1:49《三十而已 Nothing But Thirty》
    3:29《都挺好 All Is Well》
    And
    4:29 《爱情公寓 I Apartment 》
IS a bit old and I personally think it's not THAT much fun, but as I explained in the video, it's a perfect movie for you to learn Chinese.
    5:39 《泰囧 Lost in Thailand》
can be easily found on TH-cam with English and Chinese subtitles, and it's quite funny too.

I am only HSK 3-4, but I enjoy watching (TH-camd) TV drama series with subtitles in both languages. My favorites include historical dramas (Nothing Gold Can Stay, The Imperial Coroner) and modern dramas (Be Yourself, Walk Into your Memory, I don't want to be Friends with You). I also listen to (or read) "my level" things, but "my level" gets boring and language learning takes a long time. The TV dramas keep me interested. It seems like many TV dramas have female main characters, with males in important roles -- usually very powerful men (super-rich CEOs in modern shows, princes and emperors in old shows).

This is one of your very best episodes! The format is excellent. I used it for review of hanzi and also for pronunciation practice. It's spoken a bit slower than normal Chinese, but it makes this video PERFECT for shadowing speech and also for beginners. I guess it's around HSK3? I’ve recently saw 我是真的爱你。The plot in my opinion is very unusual as for Chinese production. It tells a story about the woman who is in love with her work and decided not to have kids and how the society treats her because of the choice she’s made. Also one of the main problems that are highlighted is the poor treatment of women in the workplace

Currently obsessed with Legend of Zhen Huan but yeah the language and culture points are super advanced. Half of it is subtitled on YT but I had to kind of gloss over the literary portions in the latter half lol also idk how useful it would be for language learners because I don't think anyone speaks like that anymore. I know there is 0 chance of a show like 'Queer as Folk' or 'Looking' existing in the mainland since LBGT is still an awkward topic, so the closest I can get is learning how the women in 'Ode to Joy' deal with these situations. I've started to watch the TV series as you suggested. I managed to find the episodes of 三十而已 on TH-cam but the only subtitles available are in Chinese and not dual languages English & Chinese as in some other videos etc. So in order for me to listen & understand the conversations, I have to pause the video and read the Chinese characters and use a dictionary to figure out the gist of the conversations etc. This is a very slow process and it takes me a much longer time to view the complete video episode. Do you have a suggestion as to what is the best way to improve on this? Should I at the first pass just play the whole episode and try to listen and make sense of what is the gist of the conversations etc and then after that replay the episode again and this time pause and read the Chinese characters to understand what is being said etc and use a dictionary to assist when needed.

    • @MiyaMam948

Maybe you should watch it through first (not sure how many seasons there are, maybe just the first season first) and see how much you understand via listening and watching. Then watch it again and see if you understand more due to context, subtitles, and audio.
Whether you do or don't, it probably is best to find it with English if you can. But I think it should be excellent comprehension practice

@@FruityHachi I'm afraid the main problem is that there isn't any decent crime shows. Chinese filmmakers are great at making dramas and a few certain types of action movies, the rest is either ridiculously unrealistic or obnoxiously overacted, or both, like in case of 爱情公寓. But again, in China (maybe in some other asian countries too) it seems to be an established style which is, apparently, insanely popular. So, I wouldn't have high hopes to find any Chinese Black Mirror alternatives.

      @@makesi7757 隐秘的角落, 沉默的真相
and i felt like mentioning Black Mirror was so random, i don't think you can even compare western shows to chinese shows (or to any non-western shows) because it's like comparing apples to oranges, each culture has different standards and perks
i'd only compare western shows with other western shows, chinese shows with chinese shows etc
沉默的真相 is a detective show, if you like this sub-genre more
and 隐秘的角落 is more psychological, it sparked a discussion around how a childhood can mold a person
i liked 隐秘的角落 more because it was more engaging

0:19 "The main characters are all women..."
*ME:* Tch, bet it's the classic weak female character that has to be saved by the ML constantly because of "romance tropes" or ends up in alot of issues that she can't get out by herself because she has no intelligence, no wits, no courage, no strenght(or she is said to have those but the writers never SHOW her having those) and is just a "fair maiden" seeking her soulmate in order to have her happy ending that is, as always, marrying a guy older than her and having kids...as if that was all that there is to the life of a woman...🙄
0:23 "...and not the women of Chinese tradition who are gentle and family oriented"
*ME:* _scratched disk sound_ ...comeagain?! (゚ο゚人))

    《欢乐颂 Ode to Joy》
    《三十而已 Nothing But Thirty》
《都挺好 All Is Well》 essas 3 series parece ser uma porcaria feita por feministas, só se trata sobre mulheres e como elas são superiores
