- HI ALL, THIS WEEK THE RESTORATION IS OF TWO CORGI ROVER 2000'S, IT IS A CUSTOM RESTORATION, AN ATTEMPT TO REPLICATE A ROVER 3500 OWNED BY A GENTLEMAN IN OUR JERSEY CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUB, ONE AS A GIFT FOR HIM AND THE OTHER TO KEEP FOR MY OWN COLLECTION. IT WAS A TIME CONSUMING RESTORATION WITH THE EXTRA DETAILS HAVING TO BE ADDED, BUT I THINK WELL WORTH THE EFORT.

That's fantastic Nick, they both look fab. I'm sure Reg will be chuffed to bits with his, especially in that custom box, great idea. The out door photos with the sunlight on them really made them look real size! Amazing to look at. There's a chap who drives a 1973 green one of these around the town I work in. I've always liked these Rovers.

Fantastic job , well done! 👏The decals on chrome tape works a treat Nick, you can also use that trick with coloured vinyl and reflexite* tape. (*The light reflective stuff used on Hi vis/conspicuity marking) I do that with the rear chevrons on trucks so that they are actually reflective 😉

Beauties to be sure. I live in the US so Rovers weren't common, but my dad's business partner drove one in the 70's. I recall it being a very nice car.
Thank you, yes they were lovely cars, we had one where I worked in the mid eighties as a run around which everyone drove, it was the bosses old car which he assigned to the haulage business when he bought a brand new Vauxhall Cavalier !!😊👍🐸🐸

Great tribute Nick. Nice way of making a vinyl roof look. Another one to keep in mind beside Martin Dares dust from a vacuum cleaner. I use a rust effect paint from a rattle can. Nice thought on using chrome tape for the side moulding. I've recently used 0.70mm tie wire on a recent build. Again work cheers Michael
Thank you Michael, it did pass through my mind to have a go with Martin’s dust from the vacuum cleaner but I bottled out of that one, luckily the way I tried it didn’t turn out too bad. I never realized you could get rust effect paint in a rattle can, I’ll have a look for that🤔 The chrome tape works a treat too, on my next video I used it too but it has a plastic protective film covering the chrome which needs to be peeled off which I didn’t realize till after I’d taken the outside shots and turntable clip and you just notice a piece lifting on one of the stripes🤦🏻♂🤔 The wire sounds like a great idea too👍😊

Wow fantastic job Nick , you did a A1 job i bet your friend was very happy with it . I know I would nice touch on the vinyl roof and also using the aluminium strip down the door and round the window ive got a big roll of that stuff that give me a good idea when I want to do some pinstriping👍👌thanks Nick 🐸👍.

Thank you Ralph, yes he was over the moon with the model! The bit around the windows and the side gutters was painted with the Molotow but the strip on the sides was the sticky chrome, it was a bit tricky cutting the strips thin enough though, I had to have a few goes to get them right lol, but it’s good stuff I’ve used it on the cab of the model truck you saw on Facebook that’s on my next video, the Rovers was the first time I thought to actually have a go using it.😊👍

Great work Nick... Vanguards actually make the brown P6 with vinyl roof as per your friend's car (VA06505), but you have done a fantastic job of these with your painting skills. They look great.
Thank you Paul, yes he already had one of the vanguards models, I didn’t realize he had it, but the roof is a different shade to his car so he was over the moon with the one I did him, I’ve got him a little display case on eBay for it because he wants to put it where he can look at it all the time!👍😊

Both those cars look brilliant Nick, that's a clever way of doing the vinyl roof, I'd never have thought of that. I bet Reg is chuffed with it, and using jewelled headlights in place of the broken transilights looks great. The boxes are a nice touch too. Well done, fantastic restorations. All the best. Peter.
Thank you Peter, I think if I do something else with a vinyl roof I may have to find something with a slightly finer pattern, I was pleased with the way it turned out though, I wasn’t sure if the idea would work or not. Reg was over the moon with it, but he doesn’t want it left in the box, he wants it on display where he can look at it, so we’ve got him a little display case on eBay to keep it safe😊👍 All the best, Nick🐸🐸

Cracking work nick,very nice detailing on these pair, good idea with the vinyl roof , and the boxes are superb.
That colour Mexico brown was the same colour of my rover 2000tc without the vinyl on the roof.

Thank you Martin, I was lucky with that brown, it’s pretty close to the colour of the real car, I had bought it a while back for something else but it was too dark lol. The vinyl roof was a bit hit and miss but it turned out reasonably well thank goodness!

I've done two of these - one to look like a car my pal's Dad owned (along with an old Cambridge and a Ford Zephyr 4 to make the set) and one as a replica of the Monte Carlo car that went up for sale a couple of years back. They are pretty easy to work with if everything is there. I changed the wheels and axles on the white one to better resemble the factory car.

Those wheels on the fist casting look like they've come off a Corgi Riviera or Ferrari Berlinetta... but paired-down removable wheels from a later Golden Jacks Rover would get you that hubcap look. I got the vinyl look with a tinted and white-glue soaked wet-wipe. It worked OK.

Thank you Fraser, they are a nice casting to work with, I brought a Monte Carlo one back to life a couple of years ago and a bog standard one, now these two and next the green golden jacks one to do. Your wet wipe idea sounds like a good one to try for the vinyl roof, I didn’t think of that, one for the future! I was fairly pleased with the way these two turned out and Reg was over the moon with his so mission accomplished lol😊👍

Oh wow Nick. Absolutely beautiful! They look so real. You must be so pleased with the results. I always look forward to your videos, and have a check every couple of days to see if you have a new one or not. Quick question for you, can you tell me what the "ultrasonic cleaner" is that you mention sometimes? Is it something you use on cleaning up the plastic windows? I've heard Martin mention it a few times on his videos too. Anyway all the best mate
Thank you Alan, I was quite pleased with the way they turned out but they did take me ages to get done, I usually try to put a video up every two weeks simply because I’m having a job to find enough time to get enough models done, lately I think it’s been about 10 days between, but thank you very much for sticking with me and watching my videos👍😊 The ultra sonic cleaner is a little machine, looks a bit like a mini chip fryer at the chip shop, you can wash anything that will fit in it, plastic parts metal parts, model tyres etc, you just drop them in the basket in the tank, you can get some special solution to put in the water, I put a bit of fairy liquid in as well, just switch it on, set the heat setting to what you want, I usually set it to 30 degrees and then set the timer to 30 mins, when it’s finished I just rinse off the parts under the tap. If you just type in on Amazon ultrasonic cleaner there are lots of different ones, I have tried to save a link to the one I have, but I can’t find how to do it from Amazon. Nice,Nick.but the car you were trying to replicate,is a V8,with the bonnet bulges!There are V8's done,the Corgi (ex Lledo) Vanguards range includes one or two.I'd've veen inclined to use one of those.While these two are ok in their own right,they are NOT V8 cars.
Thank you Terry, yes I was aware of this and I did try to explain the differences between the model I was using and the actual car I was trying to replicate in the photo, the whole point of this little project was to challenge myself to try and replicate the Rover in the photograph as near as possible using the Corgi model of the Rover 2000 I already had, which was in need of restoration rather than to buy a Vanguards model, one of which the Gentleman I did this for already has. However, what started as one, ended up as two after getting another donor model for the trans-o-lite unit I decided to do that one too for my own collection!
