I've seen a lot of female actors who said that they personally did not like John Wayne. Later on they admired him and happy to work with him. They were Katharine Hepburn and Patricia Neal.

Add Lauren Bacall to the list. They didn't have a great relationship on "Blood Alley", but she said when Bogart was diagnosed with cancer Wayne was the first to send flowers, even though he didn't know Bogart. They had a much better time with "The Shootist", and at Wayne's final Academy Awards Bacall said, "I only came to see Duke."

In my life, I answer to God above all else, but for day-to-day cowboy life, I do try to stick to the Code of the West. I find that the Code, like the Bible, keeps me in good graces with my fellow man, and with my Heavenly Father as well. I wish more people stuck to either one of these.

He really did love the outdoors life and at one time owned a 50,000 acre spread in Arizona and a 2,000 acre spread in California.
