Hopefully, we don’t have to worry about that. The Hollywood of then didn’t want to make this picture. It was a labor of love of John Ford’s that he had to get backing to make by doing work on several other movies for the studio. He had spent so many years trying to get his ducks in a row that Maureen O’Hara told him at on point that he better hurry up before she and John Wayne got too old, as he had told them of his plans years before.

So much of an American that he actively avoided military service during World War II. He first tried to claim medical disability from an "old college football injury" and when that failed, he wrote several letters to high-ranking politicians and ended up with a 3-A deferment for "family obligations", all the while keeping on with his acting career, and making bank while other actors entered the military in droves and lost careers doing it. So much American.

'tis a horrible bout of time we're in. Fortunately, we who love this movie grew up in a great time and are the last of those who got to experience these remnants of great times in the movies.
