John Wayne, Marion Robert Morrison, A Man's Man, On Screen & Off.
Thanks for all the hours of great entertainment Pilgrim.
I think Big Jake was his best. My brother named his son Jacob from this movie.

John Wayne was much more of a subtle actor than most realize. If you really don't know his work, you think he's a one note song, but it's not true. Sometimes his face will change 3 times before he even speaks. One of his funniest lines from (I think) War Wagon with Ann Margaret he says "Baby sister, I have a saddle that's older than you!"...with that look. Reading thru the comments I thank you all for leaving Duke's political views out of it. He was an actor and had a right to his views, whether we agree with them or not. RIP Jake....

Richard Boone knew he was dying when he made this film. Cancer took him about two years later. “Big Jake” was the last movie Richard Boone ever did and he went out superbly. Wayne and O’Hara played off of each other so well in this movie! It is as wonderful a film as “The Quiet Man” when both of them are on the screen.

In my opinion, El Dorado and Rio Bravo are the best. B
Working Wayne and Mitchum together was a masterpiece ( and the other three stars). Rio Bravo showed Dean Martin had amazing talent beyond singing voice. Rick Nelson helped but darn I love watching Walter Brennan. Yes, I know many claim Brennan was this and that. Maybe he was, maybe not. When the nasty comments began in earnest, he was long gone. Funny how that works many times.

Jacob McCandles Martha. It's been a long time. It's good to see you again.
    Martha McCandles You've changed, Jacob.
Jacob McCandles Not you. You're as young and lovely as ever.
Martha McCandles I called you, Jacob because your grandson has been kidnapped. You didn't know you had a grandson? You have, by your son Jeffrey, and Jeffrey has been badly wounded by the kidnappers.
    Jacob McCandles Will he live?
Martha McCandles This is the ransom note. The blood on it is Jeffrey's.
    Jacob McCandles Will he live?
Martha McCandles Yes. I would not contemplate otherwise.
Jacob McCandles Do we ha... Do you have a million dollars?
Martha McCandles Yes. And many times that. Hank!
    Yes, ma'am?
Martha McCandles Will you bring in the strongbox, please? Set it down here on the table. That's all.
    Yes, ma'am.
Jacob McCandles Is this the way you want it?
Martha McCandles Yes. They're very dangerous men. They've already killed ten people. Many of them you knew. Juan and his family...
Jacob McCandles Teena and the little boy?
    Martha McCandles Moses Brown.
Jacob McCandles Old Mose... lousy cook.
Martha McCandles Jacob, as I said, they're very dangerous and violent people. And I don't think we've got any other choice than to give them what they've asked for.
Jacob McCandles I agree. But you know that, pay or not, you run the risk of never seeing the boy again.
    Martha McCandles I understand.
Jacob McCandles Well, "follow the map until met." That's easy. I'll need food for a week, water for ten days, three packhorses and a good mule.
Martha McCandles Waiting for you outside.
Jacob McCandles Martha, you didn't happen to think of my Greeners... the double barrels? Oh... Ah! Oh... you brought Betsy. Pays to be careful. Well, now let's see if I've forgotten any... Oh, I'll need a piece of clothing that the boy's worn recently. His?
    Martha McCandles Yes.
    Jacob McCandles Well...
    8:49
Martha McCandles I was asking your opinion, Jacob.
Jacob McCandles No, you made up your mind. You made your decision alone. You live it alone.
Martha McCandles I was wrong. You haven't changed, have you, Jacob McCandles?
    Jacob McCandles Not one bit.
    Martha McCandles Do it!
Jacob McCandles You still want me to take this box in?
Martha McCandles Yes. If they fail, it falls to you.
    Jacob McCandles You coming along?
James McCandles No. I'll go with them.

Every time I watch this movie I keep thinking of the dog changes colors throughout the movie I think it’s well it looks like a collie with pricked ears and I think it’s a reddish sable color and then the next minute it looks like they covered it in with black mud or something I don’t know but it makes me laugh…I raise Collies so I notice ❤

    • @markhildebrand2417

The dog was definitely a Collie- a very famous one, Lassie! It was either the second or third Lassie. They had to keep dyeing his coat black. He was a great actor!

Why would you waist the 1st 5 min on the opening at the ranch ? the only part that counts is John Wayne's opening scene then everything at the depot with Jake's arrival to him knocking Patrick Wayne on his ass for not answering his question... the best opening for a movie.
