    Keelan is 24 years old. His first experience with DP came about after a panic attack during a trip to Liverpool. What followed was an intense battle with daily panic attacks which resulted in Keelan constantly feeling like he was floating, disconnected and 'like a ghost'.
    Over the following 16 months Keelan frantically searched for a solution, worried that the condition might be permanent or that he might be going crazy.
    Fortunately, Keelan has since made a complete recovery. And he's with us today to talk about his experience and his recovery from DPDR!

    Hey everyone, I just remembered this channel today for no particular reason.. I had REALLY bad DPDR about a year and a half ago, I saw no end in sight, I really thought that was it for me, for my life... I just wanted to say here I am now 100% free of symptoms! And that'll be you one day, you'll get through it, you'll definetly get through it... I can't thank this channel enough, it saved my life.

      How do you recovered? Since 5 years in the cycle

    • @Brosig18
      @Brosig18 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Butterfly-vd4tg I remained calm, repeated to myselft that depersonalization and derealization were symptoms and not inherent problems with me.
      I'm a catholic so I prayed a lot as well.
      And I went to therapy with a very specific focus, ie getting rid of DPDR symptoms.
      I think the biggest part for me was remaining calm and resolute at solving the problem. I was so scared, but I didn't cave in to the fear, took action instead.

      @Brosig18 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@stealthyguy1784 i think I can relate to what you feel… realizing that it is a positive feedback loop is important.. all of those dreadful thoughts are not you assessing reality but the anxiety itself, you have to realize that as bad a feeling as you might have, the chances of something really bad happening to you are slim to none because those feelings do not stem from external stimuli or input but from us fixating on it, the more you look at it the worse it looks. Results were really grounding for me so I’d try to focus on doing things with short term results in order to bring me back to reality, for example going on a walk, if I felt even a tiny bit better I’d use that as a grounding point thinking “see, you’re not doomed, you still respond to actual real world events”… patience and hope are your two most important tools in this! Put one foot in front of the other, take it one day at a time and don’t fight your anxiety, just let it go and it’ll gradually start to go away… hope that helps, you’ll be in my prayers!

    Depersonalisation / Dereal. from cannabis. The most frightening thing is the anxiety. Anxiety to become a schizophreniac, or being bipolar, getting a worse depression so, that I couldnt manage my life and will only suffer for the rest of my life. Getting panic / anxiety when I see children; anxiety to become a pedophile is still a problem too. Its interesting to feel these experiences but they are terrifying. Others symptoms I did not mention are still there in me. But at the end I am motivated to keep the track on becoming healthy :)
    You give me hope!

    Currently dealing with DPDR for about a month now. I've had it before but it's always been transient. Unfortunately right now, I'm dealing with it on an almost constant basis. This guy’s symptoms sound so much like mine, especially when he said he just felt like a floating head. It's really unsettling and hard to explain. I've shared a lot of Shaun’s videos with my family in order to explain what I am going through and it's really help. Thank you SO much, Shaun

    Hey Shaun, has anyone ever talked to you about existential thoughts concerning free will? Because depersonalisation can make you feel like a robot, and your feeling of free-will feels external to you. I was reminded of the quote “Man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills”. This whole ordeal made me very anxious and gave me feelings of panic.

    • @Dpmanual
      @Dpmanual  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't worry, the content of the thoughts doesn't matter, they're still ultimately driven by anxiety, they're temporary and harmless and will fade away and stop as your recovery continues 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/depersonalization-fears-and-anxious-thoughts/

    hey guys
    I had my first panic attack back in 2020 i was in panic almost everyday for about 2 weeks and When panic attacks stopped i found myself dealing with dpdr i had really strange and akward feelings that i havnt exprienced before like the whole world was strange and akward i had alot of existential thoughts like what is this world who im i ? how im i living ? what is Life
    I did alot of reaserchs i found out about your TH-cam channels so my recovery journey started and i can say that i recovered and i got my life back again and i totally forgot how dpdr feels and like it was just a bad experience
    But after almost 2 year i had another panic attack i woke up in the middle of the night not knowing who im i or where i am .that feeling got me a big panic attack i thought that i was going to die and that is death but after 3 days i was with some friends i felt like im disconnected from the world and everything is fake even my friends like nothing makes sense in the world i live in i had another panic attack and now i feel that i forgot how normal feels like and I'm stuck in the cycle again with thoughts that im never going to recover again because it's the second time having this and i wasted 2 years of my life and its like it was a dream i dont know but that feelings make panic and i want to cry like im am so sensitive and i forgot what being and feeling normal is and i want my life back with alot of frustration i dont know how to explain this uncomfortable scary feelings and toughts
    Even thinking about the fact that i could have it again scares me and right now i have this frustration of im i feeling normal or its dpdr feelings and I'm lost and i dont khow what's normal also feeling that I'm not familiar with my self abd the world around me

      Hey Tara, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual.
      And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍

I have lost track of time and after every day, when I come back to my bed, my memory kind of resets and I question everything that I have done in the day. Dear Shaun, firstly i want to thank you for all the videos.
    I want to ask a question, I would greatly appreciate it if you answered, because I don't understand if what is happening to me is dp or something else and I have a feeling that you are the only one I can ask this to.
    I have had severe anxiety and panic attacks since I was 12 years old. right now after severe anxiety in the winter I started to feel strange, for a long time I couldn't understand what it could be until I found out about dp. there are several features that match what you've been saying about dp, but the main thing that worries me is that lately I literally can't look at my body anymore. I don't understand how I can have a head, arms, legs, organs and so on. I don't understand how I can even think and this brings so much discomfort thay i don’t know how to live with these feelings. is what i called also dp or is it something else? thank you very much for your reply in advance.
    P.S. sorry for my english, I’m trying my best with it

      Yes these are DP/DR symptoms I get/ have got these thoughts/ feelings as well. It will pass you eventually get better day by day and forget about it and then randomly you will notice once day that it’s gone. Just hang in there be productive, keep a healthy routine, sleep, work eating etc and just operate life as normal and it will pass.

      Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time.

Now I am in a state of DP for 6 months and I really want to write a comment after recovery, too, that I coped and overcame it! Please tell me such thoughts as: "Am I a person?" "Why do people need money if we are just a walking body" everything around seems strange, for example, using social networks, going to the store and so on, it's very difficult to explain it, but I tried… Does this all have to do with existential thoughts? I really hope for your answer!

    hi
    I am a Japanese person who exchanged Gmail with you. 2years ago.
    I'm sorry for my unskilled English.
    I forgot about depersonalization for a while, but recently I feel like I'm going insane because of the panic on the train.
    Especially when I get on a vehicle, I seem to panic.
    I think you can get on a airplane now, but do you ever find yourself panicking when you think back to when you were suffering from depersonalization?
    Isn't the experience of depersonalization itself traumatic?
    Someone once told me that panic and anxiety are process of healing depersonalization.
    He said that I was getting out of off mode and that I was starting to feel reality but my mind wasn't ready for it yet.

    Hey everyone, I had a confusion regarding DPDR. I know what the condition is, how it works etc. But the only thing I'm confused about is whether DPDR's objective is to:
    - disconnect us from the ANXIETY caused by the stressful situation
    or
    - disconnect us from the stressful situation and NOT the anxiety caused as a result of the situation
    An example of this would be if I was in the wild, getting chased by a lion, and my body would trigger DPDR, would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from all of the anxiety that I would have in that moment due to the situation, or would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from the situation itself (the lion chasing me).
    I hope I did a good job in explaining what my question is. I'd really like some answers:)

    • @Gardeez
      @Gardeez 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Disconnect you from reality to make the stressful situation less conscious and vivid. The anxiety is what caused the episode, that part doesn't get removed.

      I was there man. Recognize the amount of good things in your life, starting off with the fact that you can walk .. breathe .. got your own food, all the basics that some people don't even have and expand on other things that you do have (that will calm you down a little bit and make you feel grateful) then start living your life man, just don't focus on that spot.

    I'm not a fan of how you laugh about and trivialize anxiety. I get that it's an expression of recovery and success, but dpdr is not only anxiety. Maybe this framing helps people who get it as an adult, and from an acute experience, but for me, who had experience of dp as early as 3 years old and cemented into it around 12-14 and didn't become real until 29 years old, no amount of telling me it's just anxiety would help.
    Thankfully Keelan later mentions how dodr is a tool our brain uses. It's related to but distinct from anxiety. I think fear is a better generalizing term than anxiety. Anyway i like how you both transition away from trivializing anxiety
