    I was 6 when I first played this game with my cousin, and I had no idea what an RPG (let alone a JRPG) was at the time, so Mystic Quest ended up being my first one. I know a lot of the hardcore fans dismiss it as being basic, especially compared to the rest of the mainline Final Fantasy games, but I still had fun playing it back then.

      It's not my first ff. My first was I, and then I played IV(NA II), but I have fond memories of mystic quest...:)

    I like the sprite effects they did for the enemies, and wished they did this for the rest of the franchise, we always see our party members showing different conditions, why not the enemies too. Also, that OST, that OST had no reason to be this good, especially the Boss Music!

    I got this game when it was first released, to this day it is still one of my all-time favorite games to go back and play. It is sad that it gets such a bad rap when in all honesty it is one of the best introduction games into RPG‘s. But that’s just my opinion.

  • @RoyInverse

    It totally succeeds on being an introduction to jrpgs, i played 1 and 2 before but they got over my head but after completing this one i went back and was able to appreciate them.

    I’m going to be honest and say that when I was a child this was one of my favorite video games. It might be lacking certain qualities that other games had back then but for that generation it was magic.

    Petition for a Mystic Quest remake.
    I wonder if Benjamin would get along with Bartz or Warrior of Light. Let's put him in the next Dissidia.

    I remember this game on the snes. My copy froze in the ice pyramid like clockwork! The manual had great artwork, the music was more metal than traditional FF games. It was fun! If you haven't yet, give it a try!

    I love this game so much. Yes its simple, yes its cheesable by farming brown chests, but man does it have charm and the MUSIC, oh the music, its so damn memorable. Its still one of my favorite OST to this day.

    Let you know in the comments below? Well, I love this game. I know it's bad. It's campy. It's not at all serious. But it has a bangin' soundtrack, and a fairly interesting combat system that taught 7-year-old-me to use weapons and spells that deal bonus damage to enemies (Most of this game's enemies have weaknesses to be exploited). I'd also describe my response to the sprites reflecting damage taken as very Pavlovian in nature. Feels good to watch them gradually weaken.
    See you on the next battlefield. I have three more RECAPs to watch this weekend before I'm caught up again. Take care.

      I like how The After Years was lowkey Dead Space months before the first Dead Space released. The crystals were basically repurposed as the Markers of the Brethren Moons from Dead Space at the last minute, and it was awesome.

    this game was what i call an introduction to rpgs.
    its super easy, and guides you every step of the way.
    if you know someone who has never played an rpg, this is a good way to get them started.
    i got this when i was a teenager. it was easy but fun. and the sound quality was amazing.

    I have ALWAYS loved the gameplay, music, and deteriorating enemies on the battlefield. Simple story, but it did what needed to be done. Minimal, but still very much a REAL Final Fantasy in my heart :)

  • @Sacrengard
    @Sacrengard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    it's a simple game, with a simple story. Nothing overly complex or too complicated. It has some nostalgia factor, and the music is good too.
    Maybe people just had higher expectations about the game, or felt insulted somehow by the simplicity of the gameplay.

    Cool video man. 👍I tried to make my friends play this game. But of some reason they don't like it, but I have liked this game ever since I was 12 years old and I still thinks it holds up. 🥰But mostly for JRPG fans. If you ask me.

    I suppose I can see why this game gets a bad rap, as it is kind of cutesy and simplistic compared to other Final Fantasy games... Not only that, but the battle style, sprite design, and treasure boxes more closely resemble the Game Boy Final Fantasy Legend games, which were actually the start of the SaGa series in Japan. Even so, for me, seeing something new that was "Final Fantasy" in between 2 and 3... which turned out to actually be 4 and 6, I enjoyed it for what it was. This was pretty much the only game with the Final Fantasy title in which weapons were useful as tools outside of battle. Not to mention, the music in this game totally rocks! Especially in the last stage and last boss battle!

    Mystic Quest is the 2nd best 16-bit Final Fantasy, trailing only slightly behind FF5. The music is superb, especially the main battle theme, which is simply the greatest.

    I'm old now, I beat this game over twenty years ago, and I'm here to see how much I remember. I remember not liking how the game played from point A to point B, like a board game, that I don't remember if it was grindy or not.

    This was meant to be a simple game designed to introduce western players to the JRPG genre. It was sold at a cheaper price and included a strategy guide for the whole game.
    Though it may have been simple and overly easy, it is a good game with a lot of charm, great music, and a good cast of characters.
    The game can be completed in less then 4 hours and with save states and fast forward, you can complete this in about 1 hour.

    The twist that the main villain was the one to create a fake prophecy about their downfall is one of the only good things about this game.

  • @TiefseeToaster
    @TiefseeToaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess it mainly got its bad rep because of the "Final Fantasy" association and the reason it was so very easy to play through.
    If my memory serves me right, this game was the first step outside of Japan, mainly into the US with a Final Fantasy game. And since it was said that US gamers would not be as diligent and calm for hard games as usually made, this one was made waaaaay too easy to appeal more.
    Living in Europe, I got the same easy peasy version as a kid. Though I loved the lighthearted appeal, the songs were cool (hummed along with them here too) and even playing it a couple of times in later years, I love how short and still entertaining it is.
    Sure, the puzzles are easy, the dialogue is superficial, but it is a quick and effective way to dive into a small story to distract from hard everyday topics and chores.

    An interesting tidbit about this game: from what I can tell, the guest that joins your party is always at or above your level, so they’re always stronger than you to help you out.

    • @scragar
      @scragar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their levels are fixed such that they're aways about 1-2 levels above you if you fight every enemy in every area without refighting them.
      It's easy to overlevel them though as their levels are fixed and in the early game it's easy to justify fighting way more enemies than you should(like say fighting enemies repeatedly to get refilling chests near the enterance to dungeons to max arrows/bombs/shurikens before exporing the full dungeon).
      Even then the max level is only 41 with Pheobe at the end of the game being a few levels below that(I think 38, although I could be wrong, and yes she's a different character to the one at the start of the game, it doesn't bother leveling them up or anything, there's just a separate companion ID for them whenever the story indicates loadout/level needs to change).

      Did the virtual console fix the bug where armour stats didn't change until you saved/reloaded?
      I tried playing the whole game in one sitting as a kid and found the final boss impossible to defeat as a result(armour affects status immunities and damage reduction, but the final boss loves confusion, paralysis, petrification, and instant death attacks so without those taking effect it's near impossible).
