+Genesis Does What Nintendoes!!! To add insult to injury, the FF2 released on USA was an skimmed version of the japanese FFIV with easier enemies and dungeons... So I guess they didn't actually learned their lesson from this game.
+Genesis Does What Nintendoes!!! Given how long the localization process takes compared to development for NES/SNES games, it's understandable why they only localized a few games. By the time FF1 released in the US Japan was already on 2. By the time they got around to starting localization of a new FF Japan was on 4, so they decided to localize 4 and simply call it 2. By the time they got to FF7 Square had switched to Sony consoles. Square decided to stop renaming the games for international release at the same time.
+wiegraf37 While the SNES original (and PlayStation/GBA/PSP remake) is pretty comfortable, most who'd use it for that now would most likely use the 3D version, which is insanely difficult compared to the original
ACTUALLY!! The first "Final Fantasy" game released in Europe was Seiken Densetsu, known in the US as Final Fantasy Adventure. Which THERE, was renamed to "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest." Why? Because fuck us all, that's why.
FWIW, FFA is AMAZING; and establishes a LOT of the now-typical JRPG cliches. Which are so, for a reason. Because the game behind it is surprisingly solid, and a lot of them attempt the same level of richness (YMMV) by *simply* copycatting the plot. It also established stuff (spin attacks, tapping walls to see if they're destructible, using tools/weapons certain ways for navigation) that later became staples in Zelda games, like LttP and Link's Awakening. I DO recommend checking that one out.
Tony TheTGR Wtf you talking about?,using tools/weapons to check walls for extra-ways ect,and spin attack and so on,was all established in "The legend of Zelda" for NES,wich came out "1986" and Mystic qest came out "1992" on the NEXT console GENERATION,so obviously Zelda came first, and established all those things wich is actually commen-knowledge if to everyone who lived thourgh that timeline up until now and every reporter ever admins that ZELDA did it all first not final fantasy infact the "first" final fantsay game came out 1year AFTER Zelda was released,so if the mechanics are similar,or remind you of Zelda than it certaintly is so,because FF copyed the mechanics from Zelda not the other way around. edit: also even Links awakening was released 1 YEAR before Mystic qest came out, again if anything theiy copyed shit from awekening not the other way around, also "a Link to the past" ALSO came out 1year and 6months before Mystic qest came out in the USA,and even 2years before its Japan release, so yea Pretty much confirmed: YOU KNOW NOTHING and you been wrong on all these statements,Mystic qest did not lay the ground work for those games,ZELDA did,and not Zelda stole from Mystic qest, but Mystic qest stole from ZELDA. next time you write a comment research shit before you talk.
Mystic Quest is still fun to play. Once back when I was a kid playing it I did a full playthrough on the original cart 100% in under 24 hours, played without turning it off since the save battery was dead and with limited breaks.
I played this when I was like 9 and it did what it was designed to do. It was my first RPG experience and the reason why I went on to play FF4, FF6, and Chrono Trigger.
Same here. I did play FF4 first and fell absolutely in love with it, but I was too dumb to strategize, so I never got past the second Scarmiglione fight before having to bring it back to Blockbuster. This one was more approachable, and the overworld monster sprites felt so much better than random encounters. I actually wish that bit had caught on.
He skipped a bit of the dialogue. She's reluctant to go initially until you show her the Tree Wither you got from the old man you helped in the forest to convince her the forest is dying.
***** TOTALLY agree. I still jam out to that soundtrack sometimes playing other games. I did enjoy the game, but yeah, it's Final Fantasy for Dummies (tm) though.
If you kill everything in all the world and zones then the player character ends up out leveling the traveling companion. Plus another thing that was not mentioned was the way the save was different. Could save anywhere.
Putting it that way kind of reminds me of Final Fantasy XIII. Just in that one aspect though, since, at least for me, the battles in XIII are where all the fun is in that game, compared to the slog Mystic Quest battles are. Still, hallway means limited enemies, so…yeah, go out of your way to kill everything.
Mystic Quest alongside A Link to the Past were my first games. Even though it's easy and hated, as a child it was my perfect introduction to RPG gaming. For all its faults, the music just sends me back so thank you for suffering through it 😂
This guy is full of shite. The game was decent for it's time. It wasn't great by no means, but there weren't too many rpgs at the time of it's release. I'd rate it slightly over mediocre. I really enjoyed this game because it was graphically superior to the 8 bit games, there were a few 8 bit games that were way better in the story and game play.
@@GTSN38 I should've put 'suffering' in quotation marks. I was replying through the lense of what he was saying in the video. This game is the reason I like gaming. I still own my copy and I still recommend it as an introduction to RPGs to people who can get it.
He was right : Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was the first Final Fantasy game we got in Europe... ...except it didn't even have "Final Fantasy" in the title. It was released under the name "Mystic Quest Legend". Oh, and by the way : "Final Fantasy Adventure" on Game Boy was called "Mystic Quest". That's just brilliant. The European titles make this series more confusing than it already is.
THe GB Mystic Quest was completely different from the SNES version. It was a a good game and you can see the similarities to later titles (like Secret of Evermore) in the gameplay.
+Christian Beier It wasn't. The Super Nintendo version is actually Secret of Mana 2, while the real Secret of Mana (called Mystic Quest outside of japan) on the gameboy was the first game of the series. Secret of Evermore was an unrelated game using a similar style, while the Final Fantasy Legends 1 through 3 for GB were actual Secret of Mana spin off games, but using a different style and not directly related to the main-plot and only occasionally referencing events.
@@ryandewhirst1579 I like it, but it's not in my Top 10, I like more the Final Boss music from that game . I have to admit that the Boss theme is a lot different from a lot of music up to that point.
I agree. I wish they did a remake that expanded the game to a full FF game similar to the others and with difficulty settings, the ability to change our characters and to level up the second character, but with both the original music and remade as options.
***** Weirdly, not leveling up the additional party members is one thing I like about Mystic Quest. By having them start stronger, then being surpassed by time they depart, you're given a solid sense of how much more powerful the hero is becoming along the journey.
"japan didnt think too highly of us". >forward to 2018 when pokemon let's go is announced as an "entry level" pokemon game. As if pokemon games werent on entry level difficulty to begin with
Pokemon is so simple it literally became popular because of 6-8 year olds who never played videogames before. And that was Gen 1, the jankiest and most esoteric generation even to this day. Pokemon has only become simpler in its explanations and tutorials since then. That's not to bash Pokemon. I still love it, even if I don't find it as engaging as Final Fantasy 6 or Paper Mario.
Damn, I didn't notice that...I was really excited for him when he caught up to the one girl at level 31, but Phoebe was immediately 34 while he was 31...xD...

I love watching your Final Fantasy videos especially since my favorite game was also FF VI. I actually enjoyed Mystic Quest as a kid and played it with my 5 year old son today. He loved the music and the fact that you could avoid bad guys if you wanted to.
YBPaladin I'm sorry a great what now, tell me where in the world have you come up with the delusions that such a thing exists, or that a game like this would on any platform be considered great.
Chris East Mobile games are usually on the simple side, especially RPGs. It would be nice to have a simple mobile RPG that doesn't go all happy with the mirco transactions. Dragon Quest 1 is a good example of what I mean
I do see your point, mine was exactly the micro transactions and the limitations. It is really hard to make an rpg in any form that don't have to be huge. There have to be some mobile games out there that made it without just dumb repetitive stuff, but you know exaggeration to make a point.

But that still doesn't explain how Kaeli is a higher level. I kinda get it in terms of gameplay, so that you don't need to grind, but on a story level, it's absurd as hell. It's possible that when Projared says that he avoided enemies, it means he didn't grind because there was no incentive to. If he still ended up killing some of the enemies, he should at least be on a similar level to his ally.
Serious answer: It's actually got nothing to do with the number of enemies you fight and EVERYTHING to do with the game balance. Ally characters *don't level up from battle.* This means that, when they join you, they join at the recommended target level for the time they *leave,* in order to keep them relevant and helpful the entire time you have them. This means that they're INTENDED to be a higher level than you when they join by *design.* Here's a point form list: - Kaeli joins at the start of the game at level 3, while you're level 1. If you fight every enemy in the Level Forest, you're still level 2 by the time she leaves. You actively need to leave the area to respawn enemies to GRIND to catch up with her before she leaves. - Tristam joins immediately afterwards at level 7, because he's going to be along for the entire bone dungeon. The bone dungeon gives decent experience compared to the Level Forest, so even avoiding avoidable fights gets you reasonably caught up to Tristam. - Shortly afterwards, Phoebe joins at Level 15. This is because you're going to have her for three zones, two of which are multilevel dungeons like the Bone Dungeon was. She probably would have only been 11-12 if you only had her for the Cave and not the Pyramid. - Next up, Reuben joins at 23, and you have him for a similar period of time as Phoebe. Again, you really don't get to do a bunch of solo combat between Phoebe and Reuben. - Tristam joins at around Reuben's level since he's a filler ally you barely have for half a zone. - Kaeli jumps up to 30 because you're going to have her for the longest stretch of the game. She also joins with a Giant's Axe, which you don't have until a ways into this segment. - Reuben joins again at like 32 or 34 or something for a single zone you're likely to gain a few levels in. - Phoebe joins at 36 for the endgame (The hard level cap you can reach if you grind is like 41-42, IIRC?) You get the idea. When I was younger I used to experiment with how much grind it would take to be on par with an ally when they join, and it made the game take, no joke, something silly like 10x longer to get through, since lower level enemies give less experience and all that. Grinding to 7 in the level forest before losing Kaeli because Tristam is coming up alone took somewhere in the vein of 45 minutes of leaving the map to reset the enemies to fight them again. The player was never intended to be on par with the allies until the end of their segment on the team, and even then, a few of them may have been slightly too high. Hope this clears it up!
The game does not suck. It was perfect for a 10 year old girl to play when she wanted to take a break from Legend of Zelda: ALthP and wanted a simple, yet fun game to play.
7:09-"Grr, damn your skills! You keep prolonging the battle by destroying my armor when you could easily strike me down! What is your-wait you're getting off on this, aren't you!?"
I actually played this way later in life around PS2 era and I love it. The soundtrack is great and gameplay being easy and super simplistic were actually a bonus as anyone can finish this in one day and not 20+ hours. The story was simplistic, but classic charming.
So the whole "partner is always stronger" thing can be explained by the fact that your partner often stays for an entire region, meaning their initial high level becomes mediocre by the beginning of the 3rd dungeon, this is obviously by design since they didn't want the player to worry about partner levelling up, for example Reuben does need those 1040 hit points to survive the Hydra's fire attacks, and his morning star needs to be that strong to deal proper damage to those bosses Though this doesn't always make sense, like Phoebe in the final dungeon being completely stronger than you in everything except maybe melee
This is one of the videos I watched of yours before everything went to shit. I wasn't like a big fan, but I did watch you occasionally and appreciated your work. I'm glad to see you survive the bullshit of the internet and pressed forward.
Zero exploration or freedom? So this was way ahead of its time in terms of FF games. It took until FFX for Square to take away free travel over the world map, in favour of point to point travel.

that's so funny, i think i played this game when i was a little kid, and i didn't remember the name, but at the moment when you start telling the story, everything comes to my mind. Yeah this game was really easy, but in my memory was fun to play.
+Carolina Moraes Myself and my 2 brothers played this game when we were young, we have fond memories of it too. We had no idea it was overly easy. We completed it I think in one or two weekends, hiring from the video store. The music has always stayed with us. And I guess we fell for the whole "let's make it easy for those dumb western kids" because we thought it was pretty good. I guess I could tell the graphics were simpler than other stuff (even Super Mario Land, one of the first SNES games) but it somehow had its own charm.
Mystic Quest was great as for me. I cracked that sucker's box open when I was just a kid and loved every moment of it because -- you guessed it-- I was a naive kid. I didn't know any better, in fact, I had no idea what the hell RPGs were until I beat this thing. I loved every moment though, the rocking soundtrack, the weird special effects from spells, it was really interesting to see for a kid still in elementary school. Maybe the target audience wasn't for RPG fanatics at all, but newcomers to the genre? It worked for me, and brought me into the fandom.
I tried the original Final Fantasy when I was 7 and while I liked the setting i never got around to completing it then a few years later my neighbor let me borrow Mystic Quest and loved it especially the music. After that I rechallenged FF1 2 aka 4 and then 3 aka 6 and was hooked.
I know it’s really silly but some of the dialogue here really does make me laugh with how silly it is. There’s something hilarious to me about a world where no one dares use Megagrenades because they don’t know how to use them, only for it to turn out you just throw them! It’s so stupid, I love it.
I was one of the noobs who needed the hand holding. This was my first jrpg ever, got it when I was around 8, and without the streamlined level of gameplay I probably never would have picked up later jrpg games, since I'm not a fan of static, turn-based fighting anyway, and especially since that Ice Golem boss took me forever to beat since I didn't really get the concept of grinding back then. I completely agree with the dialogue critique, but this game was a big help to get me into rpgs in general.
You know what would be great? A remake of this game. Like, 100% remade right down to the crappy plot and dialouge and in full squeenix 3D prettiness. But instead of super easy they crank the difficulty knob to 11. Make it Dark Souls hard as an apology/screw you to the people who hate it.
FF 8 was obviously Square trying out a lot of different stuff all at once. I mean, considering how often FFs use a lot of the same plot devices and trappings (elemental crystals, Star Wars references/wholesale ripoffs, secretly the main baddie is or was controlled by some kind of space demon et cetera) FF8 was pretty original. However it kind of proved that old saying, "What was great wasn't very original, and what was original isn't very great." A lot of the new ideas just weren't very good ones, and the stuff that worked well in it was stuff that was tried and true. The end result was a game that was all over the place and very, very confused. Still, I think that period of Final Fantasy from 6-10 was probably the best period of the series. Each game was basically a classic for one reason or another, and even though 8 is the worst of that run, it still gave us Triple Triad, which has held up for years since (you can even play it on an app or in FFXIV).
+TMG AARON I fucked myself over in 8 because I didn't want to read all the tutorials for understanding how to improve my party, that was more complex than it should have been
This game was a ton of fun as a kid, but after watching this video it looks even more simplistic than I remember. I think the visuals still have a certain charm to them though, and the soundtrack is pretty solid.
True story... I HATED RPG's with a passion when I was a kid. Then someone I knew gave me this game to play... I enjoyed it. And I wanted more. Then they gave me Final Fantasy III(VI) and I was hooked on RPG's... so shit on it all you like, and it probably deserves it, but it holds a place in my heart because it DID turn me onto RPG's. And in my opinion FFXIII is the worst Final Fantasy... I got 10 hours in and lost all interest. Everyone says it gets good around hour 40 or some shit... but thats 4 days worth of gaming I can spend on better things.
@@CrasherX2000 it's too linear, I think people hate the story, yeah I'm not sure, I myself went for the Platinum trophy, and got it in a little over 100 hours
@@CrasherX2000 Personally, I never got past like 15 hours into the game. In a franchise where exploration and characters were the main drive, both of them sucked. It had less exploration than 10, and worse characters than 1(when 1's characters were literally without personalities).
William Ruzicka I think Chrono Trigger would be a good game to start out on. I did when I started getting SNES games last year. The combat, story, characters, and settings are all amazing. It turned me from a "turn based is boring" gamer to one that loves turn based JRPGs.
Call me crazy, but this is starting bear an uncanny resemblance to another bear-bones, over-simplified, cliched JRPG. (looks at Quest 64) Hmmmm, coincidence?
My story about this game is that. Long ago when I was 6-7 or something around that. I was playing FF6 or 3 whatever you wanna call it. I couldn't beat the game so I gave up and started focusing on school. Around that time a buddy of mine asked me what I was doing during summer vac. And I told him about the game. He said that his parents also bought him a Final Fantasy game named...Mystic Quest. At the end I borrowed the game and beat it because it was easy as crap compare to FFVI. It was thx to this game that it gave me the spirit to try FFVI again, to train Terra and beat that stupid Clown Kefka. So...I'm thankful to this one.
Lava Dome was awesome - but my favorites might be the Ice Cavern, the Temple theme (used in multiple locales), the mountain theme, Doom Castle and especially the final battle - that was as complex as Zeromas and about comparible to The One Winged Angel. But yes, the Lava Dome is also an all time favorite.
Fun thing I did to take full advantage of listening to the Ice Cavern (My fav in the game) was to take out every enemy in there and the Pyramid, just so I had an excuse to listen to the theme more. To me, the battles were fun back when I was little, so I didn't care. XD

By the time they got to FF7 Square had switched to Sony consoles. Square decided to stop renaming the games for international release at the same time.

The most memorable aspect I loved about this game was the battle music. Still one of my favorite battle music of any game to this day.
The entire soundtrack to this game slapped to be fair. Graphics were poor and the gameplay was monotonous and repetitive but the music was awesome.

Funny thing was a few years later SMRPG came along and did the "gateway RPG" thing way better.

Joseph Donnelly I think FF4 did a good job at introducing kids to the genre as well.
wiegraf37 It did a decent job, but was a bit too difficult.
Chrono Trigger has the best mix of challenge and leniency
Joseph Donnelly Really? Maybe its been too long since I last played it, but I thought FF4 was pretty comfortable.

IMMACULATE
ACTUALLY!! The first "Final Fantasy" game released in Europe was Seiken Densetsu, known in the US as Final Fantasy Adventure. Which THERE, was renamed to "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest."
Why? Because fuck us all, that's why.
FWIW, FFA is AMAZING; and establishes a LOT of the now-typical JRPG cliches. Which are so, for a reason. Because the game behind it is surprisingly solid, and a lot of them attempt the same level of richness (YMMV) by *simply* copycatting the plot. It also established stuff (spin attacks, tapping walls to see if they're destructible, using tools/weapons certain ways for navigation) that later became staples in Zelda games, like LttP and Link's Awakening.
I DO recommend checking that one out.
Tony TheTGR Wtf you talking about?,using tools/weapons to check walls for extra-ways ect,and spin attack and so on,was all established in
"The legend of Zelda" for NES,wich came out "1986" and Mystic qest came out "1992" on the NEXT console GENERATION,so obviously Zelda came first, and established all those things wich is actually commen-knowledge if to everyone who lived thourgh that timeline up until now and every reporter ever admins that ZELDA did it all first not final fantasy infact the "first" final fantsay game came out 1year AFTER Zelda was released,so if the mechanics are similar,or remind you of Zelda than it certaintly is so,because FF copyed the mechanics from Zelda not the other way around.
edit: also even Links awakening was released 1 YEAR before Mystic qest came out, again if anything theiy copyed shit from awekening not the other way around, also "a Link to the past" ALSO came out 1year and 6months before Mystic qest came out in the USA,and even 2years before its Japan release, so yea Pretty much confirmed: YOU KNOW NOTHING and you been wrong on all these statements,Mystic qest did not lay the ground work for those games,ZELDA did,and not Zelda stole from Mystic qest, but Mystic qest stole from ZELDA. next time you write a comment research shit before you talk.
That IS the one, indeed. And it's still just fine. Granted, it's a trope of tropes... but only because it was the game that invented them all!
In europe seiken densetsu was called only Mystic Quest and final fantasy Mystic Quest was called Mystic Quest Legend.
Yeah but that's not actually a FF game, that's a Mana game.

It doesn't seem to be a bad game for a 9 year old tbh.

This guy is full of shite. The game was decent for it's time. It wasn't great by no means, but there weren't too many rpgs at the time of it's release. I'd rate it slightly over mediocre. He was right : Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was the first Final Fantasy game we got in Europe...

That's just brilliant. The European titles make this series more confusing than it already is.
even stranger: The GB Mystic Quest was remade nearly 10 years later... as Sword of Mana.
Yep, it's the prequel to the classic Secret of Mana

***** Weirdly, not leveling up the additional party members is one thing I like about Mystic Quest. By having them start stronger, then being surpassed by time they depart, you're given a solid sense of how much more powerful the hero is becoming along the journey.

What happened?
"I Avoid all the enemies" "All the teammates are higher levels then me" You don't say..
@@WillieManga true, but on a better note this was 3 years ago and you are probably right...
This means that they're INTENDED to be a higher level than you when they join by *design.* Here's a point form list:
- Kaeli joins at the start of the game at level 3, while you're level 1.
- Phoebe joins at 36 for the endgame (The hard level cap you can reach if you grind is like 41-42, IIRC?)
You get the idea.
"Give me money, also have like 50 bombs for free lmao"

15:38 ...Wait, this was a Final Fantasy game? I forgot.
So the whole "partner is always stronger" thing can be explained by the fact that your partner often stays for an entire region, meaning their initial high level becomes mediocre by the beginning of the 3rd dungeon, this is obviously by design since they didn't want the player to worry about partner levelling up, for example Reuben does need those 1040 hit points to survive the Hydra's fire attacks, and his morning star needs to be that strong to deal proper damage to those bosses
Though this doesn't always make sense, like Phoebe in the final dungeon being completely stronger than you in everything except maybe melee
Stay strong, Jared. You still have plenty of fans behind you. I can't wait to see what new videos you have for us

Zero exploration or freedom? So this was way ahead of its time in terms of FF games. It took until FFX for Square to take away free travel over the world map, in favour of point to point travel.

This was my fridt RPG when i was 7 years old. Loved it then and it will always have a special place in my heart.
12:06 Literally the entire plot of Devil May Cry V in a nuthsell.
How
I know it’s really silly but some of the dialogue here really does make me laugh with how silly it is.
Stay strong man we are still here with you!
You know what would be great? A remake of this game. Like, 100% remade right down to the crappy plot and dialouge and in full squeenix 3D prettiness. But instead of super easy they crank the difficulty knob to 11. Make it Dark Souls hard as an apology/screw you to the people who hate it.
Why 8? 8 was a good game.
I didnt mean anything by it. I personally just liked ff 8 and its one of my favorites.
However it kind of proved that old saying, "What was great wasn't very original, and what was original isn't very great."
A lot of the new ideas just weren't very good ones, and the stuff that worked well in it was stuff that was tried and true.
+TMG AARON I fucked myself over in 8 because I didn't want to read all the tutorials for understanding how to improve my party, that was more complex than it should have been
TMG AARON 8 is my favorite

William Ruzicka I think Chrono Trigger would be a good game to start out on. I did when I started getting SNES games last year. The combat, story, characters, and settings are all amazing. It turned me from a "turn based is boring" gamer to one that loves turn based JRPGs.

maybe... exept that in quest64 it's possible to die. at least until you get magic barrier.
Auto battling party members?
**Persona 3 PTSD flashbacks**
"Marin Karin!"
Or Yukari with fucking dia when nobody needs it.
"Mitsuru, I'm dying-
"get marin karin'd"
Amen
6:58 It'd a been funny if Jared said "fuck it" and just kept playing Final Fantasy VI from that point on.
My marathon of rewatching, liking, and commenting on every Jared video continues. Video 13
This game was my first RPG, so I have good memories with it. Great music.
The music was epic
Jonathan Kozenko That Lava Dome.
XD
thats something he didnt tell but battle themes boss and final boss themes where truly epic... its probably the best part of the game
i deactivated ad block just to support you jared
@@Lexicon1020 yeah
@@Lexicon1020 would it help if after i finish all his videos, i play the entire play list on repeat on another tab?
@@Lexicon1020 cool, then i'll do that
I didnt disable adblock. But im on mobile, so i dont have it.
This was an awesome entry for me into the RPG world, not my favourite, but made me fall in love with the whole concept.
It was quite easy, but still a cool game. I really liked it. Plus, some great music.
same

i have fond memories of playing this with my brother in the ye old "pass the controller" style
Reanchi lmao you remind of my old days too with my brother but instead we were playing digimon. used to watch him explore the game and drooled myself like an idiot seeing those big-ass digimon bosses.
It's crazy to think Benjamin (the hero of MQ) was brought back when they released Theatr Ryhtm Curtain Calls.
Oh, right he is called Benjamin. Very great and creative name for a Fantasy game. That's like on Jim's level (Hydlide).
This game was bad, but it did have kickass music.
which tbh is expected in a square game.
+MrMcPsycho The prequels weren't THAT bad.
+nitehawk86 I completely agree. this was the first rpg I have played and the behemoth battle is too luck based. also why would any player use scale over figure for the hp system.
Just here to keep up the love for Projared!
1:06 "Japan thought Americans were too stupid to understand JRPG's"
Given how FFXIII was received in America, it turns out Japan was correct in that assessment.
