You glossed oever how when Exdeath turned into a tree that was him returning to his true form, since he was a tree used to seal evil who gained sentience from the souls trapped within him. All those souls probably explain how he never stays down too.
It loosely ties into the game's beginning. The reason the crystals are weakening, hence Exdeath returning, is due to humans amplifying their power for their own uses, alluding to humans abusing nature. So, Exdeath embodies and accumulates the human-caused evil stress that was harming the planet.
FFV aka The Not So Giving Tree

I think when you fall in battle you don’t die but you are “Wounded”. This is why they can be revived. In the case of Galuf etc. they actually died..

Man it's been so long since i beat the game. I couldn't remember half of the stuff that happend. But what i do remember is defeating neo exdeath with massive gil toss. I showered him to death with money. :)

Galuf is really the most badass character on FF series so far. No other characters managed to cling to life after their health reach zero by pure will alone, while also staying strong enough to deal decent damages to beat Exdeath.
When i was first playing the game on PSX years ago, i was like...
"oh great, now i got to fight this asshat with only Galuf...aaaand he got one hit killed...wait what...he's life hits zero and he's not dead??...oh hell fucking yeah!!"
Long story short, it really got to me that i shed my manly tears in honor of the badass warrior of dawn who just died in the most badass way possible.
He's one of the most likeable characters in the series' history.

why does this game get so much flack, the job system alone sounds amazing, story seems ok more down to earth coming of age tail.
It gets like no flack, it's just forgotten. It has the unenviable task of being wedged between IV and VI. Gameplay wise, it's easily one of the best in the series.
Because it didn't come stateside until much later, so little to no nostalgia.
I think this is easily the most underrated FF game. While there are better FF games, I think it is the first ff game that really stood out to me. I don't know ff 4 really didn't do anything for me, even though it is better received.

3 years later and FF5 is still my favorite.
6 may have the best story, but 5 still has the best gameplay.

FF VI: stop an dranged clown from ruining the world

Shit, Galuf is badass.
Probably one of my top favorites in the game, due to it being serious while also making fun of itself. The self-awareness it has is amazing, as are the enemies and the funny moments. I also LOVE the job system here (though I've always made Lenna my physical/Galuf my mage) ... all around an amazing, fun game.
As much as I love your work, I’m really disappointed how you completely ignored Exdeaths origin, as it depicts why he took on a tree form, which is his actual true form.
Actually, Exdeath as a tree is his original form (hence the Forest of Moore being his place of origin). And the Neo form was rather how he came to be in the first place, as the living forest had stowed away all those evil spirits inside that tree. In Laymen's terms, Exdeath is kind of like Pandora's Box in tree form.
Then again, the in-game dialogue doesn't really explain this. And the best source of this is Final Fantasy Wiki, which lacks citation. Then again, this kind of story does somewhat make sense. Ghido says he came from an enchanted forest, so it would be fitting for him to become a tree as if that were his true form.

Oni is butchering the english language, with ALL of the pronunciations, from multiple videos... Its Gal-uff not gooloof or Bahamut, is Baa-hum-mutt, not Bah-hum-moot. Just American's take on english.

English is native to England, heavily influenced by European languages, so to say American take on English is "correct", *technically* you're wrong.
Fun fact: Magic reflection status can reflects Bahamut's Mega Flare on FFV. Having reflect spell or Carbuncle is more than enough to face Bahamut easily.
Doesn't work on quake or his other moves he uses to counter.
sad fact: aparently if someone from your party dies in the void when fighting Neo exdeath they are stuck there even after you finish the game
FF5 is underrated. It is my personal favorite, the plot is not a mushy soap opra like the others and the story direct. it is based more on adventure than characters, but with some emphasis on characters. and I like the characters. all of them protag, Bartz, you name him, I lie Lenna and the others too. it is told like the classic series/movies of old, no heavy syirup "reality"? like today's movies, games, ect. yeah, the airship captain is a cross-dressing female, but her weirdness is not the dominant feature of the story and is mostly in the b;ackground and is not made a big deal about so not too bothersom or PCified. unfortunately, that may change as they "remake" too much stuff and it is ruined! music rocks!
It's probably one of the hardest as well lol you literally have to put in 100% effort when it comes down to strategy.... Great game!

I theorise it was the closest translation that the creators of this fan-translation could find.
However the name Krile I theorise is a new name instead.

The closest romanization of the original Japanese name is Kurairu, so Cara was a "safer" name to pick during that time so it didn't seem too out there... Not that Galuf isn't out there itself

Yeah. First time I played this, I didn't free Lone Wolf, and that wolf that identified Galuf still roamed around and died as scripted.
I like the 2D FF games way more than the newer ones
FF5 on the PlayStation was junk because the long load times for the battles on the disc made the game not worth playing. FF5 was supposed to come out for the SNES here as Final Fantasy Extreme according to what I read in a Nintendo Power magazine but they spent so much time translating it that 6 had come out in Japan so they worked on that and it came out as 3 here and they cancelled FF5 or Extreme as it was to be called here. It is interesting that Square Soft released trading cards for FF5 in Japan in 1992 . Those cards were never released in the U.S. And fortunately I ordered a box of them from a store in Japan. These cards are very rare because none of my other gaming friends who like FF5 even knew these cards existed. When I meet other gamers who really like FF5 I like to give them one of the cards.

Not sure if it was mentioned in the comments, but Lone Wolf isn't the same Wolf that gets burned away at the Karnak Crystal, that was another visitor named Fang/Tsuze, the real Lone Wolf was actually a thief who would loot treasures at certain dungeons, he would leave a note saying he was the one who took the treasure, but only if you set him free at the castle dungeon in Walse.

I went and palyed VI and after I failed at buying the previous ones I downloaded them all from the internet... that was a pretty big thing back then ;p gotta say that I trough III felt weird... ( I know I know don't judge me) IV was really cool!! just as much as this one!

V was the FF that I finished and enjoyed most times, including the GBA and DS versions. The job system allowed to make such a powerful party at the end, and it was here when the first super hard bosses appeared as an extra challenge.

Yup I was on the part after defeating exdeath but I got into ffVI I had the ff anthology with V&VI I had completed all those jobs,etc.Then my PlayStation 3 crashed and I lost all of my saves all my final fantasy progress from 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 13 I was so upset I will finish it!!!

This story is so underrated.
It wasn't Lonewolf who stepped in to delay the destruction of the Fire Crystal. It was someone from Galuf's world. That was revealed by an NPC in Kelb.
Lone Wolf just takes some treasure from some dungeons leaving notes. Better not to free him.

Thank you so much for this summary -- I grew up playing the Japanese version on the Super Famicom which we lost during our move to the US. Always wondered how the story resolved after Galuf's death. The music and art still remains in my memory to this day 30 years later

There's some small Bartz x Lenna hints in the very beginning but pretty much nothing after that, there is no actual romance in the game aside from a NPC in Bartz's town who has a crush on him

I know i have no say i still liked and subscribed.. i just wish you slowed down a bit. I want to absorb all the story and lore and i know you needed to skim through stuff for a time restraint. But yeah some of the stuff was too fast for me to keep up. I'll never have the time to play this game, obi-wan you're my only hope.

I wonder how I will play this one. I finished VI and now I'm playing through IV. I'm loving the Final Fantasy series more and each time I play a new game in the series. I've been playing VI and IV on my Wii U on the Wii Menu. They need to hurry up and release the GBA Final Fantasy games so we could still play them. However I want to play the original SNES version of V. I love the SNES soundfont and bass very much.

It's also explained that many of appearances are supposed to be the same one from FFV, and Dissidia makes it more clear that Gilgamesh uses the Rift to travel between different worlds :P
I really think there should be a dungeon crawling FF game starring Gilgamesh. You upgrade him by finding weapons throughout the dimensional rift, he gets more arms as he levels up, etc etc. It'd be really cool.

Just finished this game again, now as an adult. I do appreciate the job system is pretty amazing, but the story is just so lack luster. It’s a step down from 4 in that aspect. It just feels thrown together. Kinda like how 3 was. Still a great game, just not in my top 5 FF games.
