This album deals a lot with social issues, especially violence. This songs deals with the corrosiveness of violence and abuse, fear, anger, and hate, both on the personal and societal levels. How experiencing violence and abuse can warp a person. How everyone has a limit and if you push someone far enough they will push back in some way. Maybe they will lash out at others, maybe against themselves. The "Mother" verse perfectly illustrates the cycle of abuse and why it's a cycle. At first he just wanted the pain to stop but the fear and anger and hate corroded and warped him until he became the very thing he hated. Until he became the abuser. "Mother" isn't meant to be taken as his literal mother but more as a symbol of society or the people around us that we may both care for and hurt us.

year 2000 - 2005 is an all high in domestic abuse specially in children.
He was abused by his mother though but reconciled with her then she died of cancer. He grew to have a problem with the church cause his mother used it to justify her abuse until they reconciled. The problem with the church persisted afterwards and he grew to hate the church after his mother got cancer and would only listen to the church rather than do the treatments suggested by the doctor.
Well said. This song came out when I was in my late teens and describes my whole upbringing with disturbing accuracy. I don't get into relationships and I wont have kids because I fear I've become that same short tempered demon my mother was and I refuse to put anyone else in that situation. Maybe I have more self control and I'm generally a nice person to the people (Friends/family) I love but I feel that anger inside me and I'm not even gonna risk it. That cycle ends with me even if it leaves me loveless and miserable. Worth it.

To me the middle part was like “when I dream” (1st part = memories of him as a child receiving abuse from his mother - 2nd part = fantasy of him as an adult saying to his mother everything he wanted to say but couldn’t back then).
Whenever I hear this song, it makes me think that he's singing about an abusive childhood. Then when he snapped was when he was old enough to get out, you can only take too much shit before it hits the fan.
This is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them.
In the middle of the song, David acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!") A good example of this would be the school shootings that go on around the country.

I was abused by my father all of my life to the point that I once missed 3 months of school due to injuries. By the time I was in high school and it was still happening, I yelled stuff like that at him. Once you’ve dealt with pain for so long, they can no longer hurt you. They just piss you off.
I have a friend who’s gone through that and I managed to get to them just before they could take their own life so although I don’t personally know how hard that must’ve been, I have a general idea and I just want to congratulate you on staying strong. You are amazing! All Children deserve parents. Some parents don’t deserve children

The song isn't about his literal mother. It's a metaphor for culture. The "mother culture". There's a song off of the Lost Children album that is sort of a thematic companion for Down with the Sickness called "A welcome Burden" that gives a bit more insight into this.
There's a few interviews where he explains this. Absolutely not a Korn ripoff, LOL

I was raised in ciudad juarez, Mexico. There was 3,170 murders there when I grew up. I've seen my uncle die and had to bury my little bro murdered by drug gangs. I always used to be scared everyday and full of nothing but anger, anger to those who harmed my family walking around so I dressed it up with anger and hate. I can say what you said was totally true. Fear and hate is a very powerful and addicting.

Well, as Dream Theater ballads go, Wither isn't a terrible one. I really think DT writes bad ballads. I like a good ballad but they just cheese it up too much when they do it. Disappear is the only actually good one.
I think Blind Faith is the perfect DT song for new people. It's got some good riffs, some good prog, interesting lyrics. It doesn't over do the progressive stuff that turns a lot of people off.
