    Would have liked to see you use the native RF 50mm 1.2 from Canon. Not that it is going to make the 20MP higher resolution, but it has been shown the RF is sharper than the EF version. Autofocus is also much better on the RF version. You really should have worked to compare the newest Canon lens and the newest Sony lens to make this more apples-to-apples, or used an older Sony.

    Sharpness and autofocus is always the camera and the lens working together. The sharpness test would have been better with a Sigma 50 art adapted to each camera and the autofocus with a native RF L lens. I do not believe that old 50 L is fast focusing at all, Older canon primes tend to be sharp in the center only, even when stopped down.

    • @TonyDae

      @@TheSlantedLens This doesn't really solve the problem here. Your comparisons are naturally going to favor the better corrected and more modern Sony over the older EF 50 f1.2 due to better AF technology and lens correction. The comparison really needed to feature the top end native mount 50s against each other to be a more fair comparison if you were going to feature the Sony 1.2.
      Both the RF and FE 50 f1.2's are much, much better corrected and faster/more accurate than the old EF design. This is objective and a fair criticism of the video.

      @@TheSlantedLens I’ve tested both those lenses on R5 and R6’s and respectfully disagree. The motors in the RF lens line and the overall lens “intelligence” is designed to be efficient in autofocus when it comes to interfacing with the camera. That’s why you had a few misses on the EF and it slightly scored less than your GM comparison. Although I can agree that EF lenses do work well with R bodies for sure, and maybe even better than on DSLr’s, it’s not appropriate to do a comparison of an adapted lens against a native lens from another camera system. On top of that, although there are aesthetic qualities between the EF and RF, that you could argue about since that’s purely subjective the technical optics of the RF are also superior to the EF version. You would have been better off comparing the EF to the RF lens within the system which would be an extremely valuable comparison but comparing the old 50 EF 1.2 adapted to a Sony 50mm f1.2 G master on an stove body is not a fair comparison and just doesn’t make sense. And I’m actually a predominantly Sony user myself but also use Canon from time to time for my shoots. So I’ve had experience with both systems.

    I usually like your stuff but I don't understand why would you use Canon's EF 50 f/1.2 instead of RF version. EF version is quite soft and at it's best resolves 15 megapixels on a 20 megapixel sensor, it's sharpness is 15 P-Mpix for a 20 megapixel sensor, there is a big difference in resolving power between EF and RF versions. Also, on the first comparison photo it looks to me that foreground (grass) on the Canon side was much sharper which indicates that focus on this comparison image was on two different focal points, background on the Sony and closer to foreground on the Canon. You used the wrong lens, the Canon RF is incomparably faster than its old version. It's like comparing Spacex rockets to Sputnik. Canon EF 50mm is the release date of 2006, it is almost 15 years. I myself have used a reduction camera, both Sony and Canon, and I know that communication through the reduction ring, although original, causes slow communication and blurring when focusing, and for videos the focus speed is about 40% worse. I don't mean that it's a bad lens, it's just very, very, very, very old. The second thing is that this lens was not designed to create a video, but only to create a photo. Otherwise the dynamic range on Sony is amazing. Thanks for the video.

    Hello from Mexico!! A very good comparison that clears up many doubts. You have done a good job. There's just one thing I don't quite understand. There in your dynamic range comparison, there is an aperture of f5.6 in both cameras, the sony looks clearer, when you lower the shutter speed to 1/320s, the same, sony looks better. I ask you, in those cases, WHICH IS BETTER? Put a more open aperture like 2.8 to help the dynamic range? Or does the dynamic range benefit more with slower shutter speeds? You are the expert, we await your answer

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are confusing the dynamic range with the exposure. The shutter doesn't affect the dynamic range and the aperture shouldn't affect the dynamic range. But it will give you the impression that it affects the dynamic range because it affects the exposure and depth of field. You will be super happy with the a7 IV or the R6 II.

The S5 is as good or better other than AF only in Video mode, and doesn't shoot 4K 120fps. Otherwise, feature for feature, the Panasonic blows both these cameras away including low-light. I think the S5 is a superior Hybrid camera for about 5600 less that the A7 IV body! You can buy the Panasonic S5 in a kit with the S 20-60mm f/4 for the near the same price.

Canon & Sony is what dominates the Video world, Panasonic is really good too but I don't know why they won't improve their AF System, if they do I am switching to Panasonic directly. Good Color Science, Decent Lowlight Performance, cheaper, the IBIS is great, ALL-I Format, 10bit capabilities, no overheating, unlimited recording time, basically a very well rounded camera, if AF is as fast as the R6, Panasonic would blow Canon and Sony out of the abyss in the video world if such improve AF Systems happens.

I would imagine that for most applications 12mb is fine, but if you're doing corporate work that requires heavy cropping or the requirement for very large photos, then I'd stick with the A74 instead of the A7s3. - having said that, you can get amazing photos on the A7s3, and in low light you'll even get a cleaner photo thatn the A74.@@86london

    All these people whining about the EF instead of the RF lens…actually the EF is nicer in some ways…the RF is overly sharp in comparison and has less pleasing bokeh from other reviews I have watched on the subject….but yes the RF lens is a touch faster than the EF in focusing speed. I was on the fence for a few months about which camera I wanted- canon vs. Sony…but the deciding factor is the lens eco system is wayyy more affordable AND you have more interesting choices from Sony Zeiss and or G master: Character vs. clinical perfection…Canon it’s clinical EXPENSIVE perfection or clunky cheap all made by Canon kinda boring imho.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly enough. A good friend who shoots wedding feels like the EF is much more pleasing and romantic for weddings. It just depends on what you want.

    Sorry if I also ask you another question because I have great trust you and your professionalism. What variable ND filter would you put on the Sony SEL 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS 77mm zoom lens? I would like one that decreases the definition of the clip as little as possible. I'd like to know the brand and dimension of the VND filter. My budget is max 150 euros. THANKS

    I guess my eyes are not as good as they once were, but I like the JPEG images of the R6 better. They seemed more color rich and more pleasing. I know the Canon R6 is an amazing camera. As a Canon user I would purchase it if it had 33 megapixels. I am disappointed with Canon's offering in my price range. The need a Canon Rii and/or increase the sensor size in the R6. I am seriously considering the Sony a7 iv with an adaptor.

    Should have made the test with the 50mm RF 1,2L. 20-33 Mpixels no match in resolution/detail. I don't think comparing Sony's new FE 1.2 vs the ancient EF50mm 1.2L makes much sense anyway.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see why you think that, yet the Canon Lens performed quite well!

  • @creatorsjourney6286
    @creatorsjourney6286 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I noticed the EF lens and not the RF 50mm but, from that aside, I will tell you that I am not very happy with the R6 so far, I was very optimistic but…. The dynamic range is lacking a bit, specially for landscapes (not a landscape camera for me so far) the R5 has more pixels but, to my eyes, I don’t see much difference in quality unless it’s used with different lens. I will have to make a new video to update my findings on the R6. Your videos are always well made and love your explanations.

    Jay P, Thanks for sharing this helpful video. I'm ready to go mirrorless and non-professional video-ing with the about-to-be-bought Sony a7 IV (no existing investment in lens worth worrying about). Please suggest the Tamron lens I will want for Vlogging and indoor video green screen use. Maybe the 24-70 you list below?? I have no video experience yet but I hear wide-angle is best?? Color is definitely better on canon. During the iso test, you had way more color in the red, blue, and magenta. The vibrant but natural canon look. Sony was more washed but way sharper. A typical trait of sony imagery.
