I am just starting wood engraving as a hobby and your video was hugely inspirational. What a beautiful print.

I was told that this was how they illustrated newspaper and books in the days of letterpress printing. They carved pictures onto a piece of wood and compose it alongside lead types. Just sounds crazy to think about it.

A very beautiful print that was done
I would like to know what if you had to do various colors from just 1 wood block if possible could you give a demo in this same process, if you could I would be really happy. Tks fro this video

+joshua gorey Though it is possible, she has never tried it. There are other artists however who do, with lino cut, but she does not know any who do it with wood engraving.

It is often done using 2 blocks and a frame or key. Here's the process more or less: th-cam.com/video/7VjLRB0H834/w-d-xo.html - it is not too complicated. You can of course ink a single block very carefully by hand in more than one color and then print, but in my experience I usually make a bit of a mess :-) The big printing presses have an inking plate for faster printing of large quantities. On those you can carefully apply multiple colors to different areas of the inking plate, which is then applied to the block between each print- it is a bit of a challenge to do well but I've seen it done.

how to remove plastic engraving plates with adhesive on them from wood

This is the same technique used by Gustave Dore?

Yes it is, although I don't think he did his own. His publisher may have hired trade engravers to render artists' existing illustrations as wood engravings to be produced in books.

these little samples are nice but why are they always simplistic nature or architecture? How did Dürer or Doré make the hyper-realistic portraits and fantasy scenes made of millions of impossibly tiny arrays of dots and lines?

Well, best to look directly at their work. There is a reason they are famous, and considered geniuses. Even though they are no longer alive to tell us, they left their work behind for us to study - studying the brilliant work left behind is enough to keep an artist busy for several lifetimes. Start making art every day, and every night go look at engravings, study how they make little lines and dots come alive and shine - that is what I try to do.
