Wood Engraving from Sketch to Print : Holy Carp!

  • This video shows my entire process of creating a wood engraving from the initial sketch to the finished print.
    The ¼ round of end-grain maple wood I use came from The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Hamilton teamed up with The Wood Engravers Network, an organization of which I’m a member. They sent the wood blocks to several WEN members as a part of a project called, “Seize The Carp”. WEN editor Tony Drehfal organized this long-term collaboration with Hamilton in the spirit of carpe diem - seize the day - for wood engravers.
    The terms were simple: We can engrave our blocks in any style we wish, but the theme must be a carp fish. Once engraved, we can print an edition for ourselves to have or sell, and then we mail the block back to Hamilton to be included in their permanent collection. Anyone taking a workshop at Hamilton can choose one of our carp blocks to lock in with their type and make posters, cards and broadsides. I’m so happy to have been a part of this cool project!

    This is really awesome. I've never tried wood block engraving, but I enjoy drawing. Your video made it very simple to follow. Gonna try this weekend. Thanks again for the post!

    Love this process! Thank you. It would be awesome to get a video on the engraving tools you used and what you use them for. As I’m just starting to learn and their seems to be a lack of videos breaking down the tools. Or I’ve just not used the right search terms yet. Ha
    Thank you for your content

    Holy carp Eric that's a nice crisp print ! Just discovered your channel (I'm coming from Graham's Diode press), thanks for sharing your process. I make linocuts and I'm pretty sure I'll try woodcut one of these days...

      La presse de l'alex hi! That's awesome! I'm a huge fan of Diode Press! Graham's a great guy Glad you found my channel! Definitely try a woodcut, although I prefer Lino too!! Less issues with wood grain showing and stuff like that

      Since in 4 years this guy can't be bothered to respond to a question by one of his viewers, here's a link to another artist who explains what each of the tools are for. th-cam.com/video/eKmArlrjxLI/w-d-xo.html

    I am an engraver who mostly prints by hand but I think I am ready to bite the bullet and get a press. Would you recommend a Conrad press like yours if I am going to use it most of the time to print type-high wood/resingrave engravings (as opposed to intaglio prints or even linocuts)?

    Eric great video, from start to finish! Can you share what kind of carving tools you used and where to purchase? Also, is mahogany wood the best to use for wood engravings? wood blocks as well?

      Susan Cheatham hi! I’m using engraving burin tools from EC Lyons. I purchased them from a fantastic website McClains Printmaking Supply. As for woods, as long as it’s a hard wood and you are engraving in the end grain they should work well. Rock maple and boxwood, and lemon wood are usually the favorites amongst Wood Engravers! For regular woodcuts (with knives and VGouges etc), birch, Shina and mahogany are great! Shina is a beautiful wood with almost no grain that is also sold through McClains!

    Where did you get the diamond tip carving tool? Or, is it called a spit sticker? Sorry wasn't sure what that was. I want to carve small areas and do those delicate arched lines in my block prints. I am carving bass wood.

    • @SpoffordPress
      @SpoffordPress  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      kosuru keerthi hi! I’m using a few tools, all wood engraving tools called “burins”. One is a diamond shaped tool for thin lines and these a tool called an “elliptical tint tool” or “spitsticker” (that’s the nickname) that makes lines that swell and taper.
