As an insulin dependent T1 diabetic I'm absolutely going to tell my boss that I'll "have a little chat with my pancreas and tell it to pull its socks up" the next time she gets mad about me being late for work due to my diabetes 😂 Roy is my hero
As someone with allergies and anxiety I was surprised he didn't have any insulin with him, did you find that weird? If I'm at home I leave my medicine in one place but if I'm out and about I always have it close by; it's been a while since I've worked or gone to school in a big building so I can't remember what I used to do then but if I was Roy I would have kept (some of) my medicine with me in the kitchen and not left it in the cabin. The only person I know who's diabetic is my cousin but she has one of those permanent insulin pumps and that obviously wasn't a thing in the 70's and even now it isn't available to everyone (I was also surprised he would even need insulin atm but that's easier to just chalk up to me being unfamiliar with the condition)
@@char1211 the only thing I can think of is that possibly Roy ran out, back in the 70s diabetes care wasn’t as manageable as it is today, so it may have been one of those situations that he didn’t have any and when someone mentions that it was “dropped off at his cabin” in the scene where we meet him maybe that was a refill delivery. I also have a pump but in the before times (the 90s lol) we’d always carry a full kit with us whenever we went somewhere since you’d never know when you’d stop to eat or if you’d be out during a regular injection time. My guess is that he was waiting for a refill and didn’t have any on him and was waiting to give himself his injection once his shift in the canteen was done. That takes some effort, even for a diabetic, *and* a distinct lack of responsibility/blood sugar control. And if he was actually already sick from high blood sugar, then getting to his cabin to get insulin is not the best idea either.
@@chinchilla0708 You could assume that, but the problem is the dialogue/scene doesn't make much sense for either of the two characters, and at least one of them should certainly know better, his life literally depends on it.
I do like how there are a lot of survivors initially. A lot of times after an incident only the main character is around but it makes more sense for a lot of people to still be alive at this point
Really enjoying this game, I feel like not enough horror utilizes the anxiety of seeing how many of your friends survive with you, they're all usually dead from the start and it's just you running around alone. But I need somebody to get off this rig with Caz so badly and that I don't know who will, if anybody, keeps me tense as hell.
This game was pretty impactful emotionally for me. The acting and the story being told is so sad. It feels hopeless from the start. The creature is pretty disturbing with the way it links to the person they consume and starts randomly spouting things these people had on their minds while here on the rig just before they gotten absorbed.
I hope the ending is as good as how it started. This game is great in atmosphere, creature design and animation, the voice acting... And the sounds of the creatures. Creepy enough to not be overdone or cheesy in a bad way. I just have one question: are oil rigs THIS maze-like? Holy hell.
They are very maze like, they did a great job with the rig itself. It seems like they made the puzzles to fit the setting rather than making the setting fit the puzzles, yknow?
John's delight at the accents and his reaction to the monsters showing up are really the cherry on top of a nice and scary game, I'm really digging how they've done the horror so far. So cool to compare this entity to the one from The Thing. The Thing operates using intelligent deception. Starts off somewhat slow and meticulous. All those years spent frozen... Comparatively one is totally aggressive. No deception (yet?) but the assimilated hosts seem to retain some thin membrane of cognitive function & recognition. Or the virus incorporates their knowledge. Having an awesome time watching this one. Thanks John!
It's like it flails around until it finds intelligence, then uses the hosts to lure in more. Some retain their personality and can recognize people and names, others are just screaming for help, which draws people in.
Despite this game being so linear I think it's the type of game that works well like that bcs of the story it has. In a place like an oil rig there's really not much branching you could do I'd say unless you decide to make this a shooter/survivalist game. Really enjoying this so far, the atmosphere and setting of this game is wonderful! Thanks for bringing this to us John, hope youre enjoying this game too😊
I definitely think as far as linear experiences go, this is the absolute best it can get! There’s enough small elements of gameplay to keep it interesting and enough variation in enemies and environments that the game always stays fresh, and that’s on top of the extremely strong writing too. Hearing the characters talk to each other always makes me smile
This works especially well because the oil rig is in the process of collapsing. Most horror games have you explore a place that was already destroyed/abandoned. This is trying to survive the actual disaster, not just the aftereffects.
The monsters are really fun, but I continue to be impressed by the acting. They got some real talent behind them. The conversation with Roy about the jam and McCoy... so well done. But yes, very tense, I legit couldn't look away during the chase sequences!! What a great horror game!
Bit odd to come here from the Bioshock replay and see all these great opportunities to hit a vent cover etc. with a wrench…but Caz is a screwdriver man, and I respect his choices, I suppose
This could totally be a series caz somehow survives and becomes part of a team that hunts down these Monsters, all the super human shit hes done definitely feels like all the "normal people" who became part of resident evil zombie hunting team
First time in a while where having to wait two days for the next part stings a little ahah- I usually watch your videos while I'm getting on with artwork but this one has me so hooked the paintbrush has not left the jug! Great playthrough so far and the Scottish accents are so warm and homely
Wow! What an incredible game! A horror game set on an oil rig is a brilliant concept; theyre already so spooky just by themselves! And the atmosphere in this game is top notch, alongside the voice acting, writing, monster design... what an incredible game. I hope its able to keep this momentum and deliver us a good ending!
You actually did glitch the monster out at the end haha right after you restart the relay from coming back the monster is shown smacking the glass trying to get into the room. But in your playthrough we don’t see the monster although the sound for him hitting the window is still present. Really weird and hilarious, first time I’ve seen it happen
There's an ice cream truck in the neighborhood and the ever increasing sound of those chirpy tunes while my brain tells me it comes from the game is quite adding to the creepy environment ngl
This game makes me feel like I did when I first watched The Thing: scared to turn off the lights but also loving how good it is from the setting to the pacing to the voice acting (and the Thing-inspired monster design!) Thanks for playing this one, it’s an amazing watch!
John, you're throwing too many objects so you don't get to hear all the things the monster says. It's creepy because it's like the monster is merged with the people that's been absorbed and using their most negative thoughts as a way to intimidate its foe.
I feel like there's no right or wrong way to play games, some people want to hear all the dialogue and some people just want to get to the next area ASAP, both are valid (especially in a horror game!) Like when I play a game I like looking in every corner for notes/interactive items etc. but one of my friends doesn't bother with any of that stuff and that's just her play style.
The idea of not being able to turn the valve is actually so funny because like for real you'd be like "no it's just the air is so moist and my hands are naturally sweaty- HRRRRGGGH- yo like someone legit glued this wtf do you want me to do???? Does anyone have a cloth, preferably microfiber so I can grip it, no one can grip this in these conditions!!! IT'S NOT MY FAULT"
The rig boss- or "ship captain" as he likes to call himself- turning into a huge mutation brings me back to Halo 1 when the captain gets taken over by the flood :)
Loving this game so far! The atmosphere the characters the monsters the voice acting its all really good for me atleast i really hope they dont fumble the ending
Im really enjoying it so far, and the monster design reminds me of the fish guy from RE Village. Please play Crow Country next! It does remind me of older RE games as well and looks really cool!
Don’t know about you John (have yet to finish the entire video before commenting) but absolutely loving the atmosphere, sound design (incredible visceral effects used imo) and enemy design. It’s reminding me a little of SOMA. If anything some more lore notes would be good, but not many games are able to strike a good balance with reading and gameplay I feel.
Hey john! I have been a viewer for a pretty long time now nd it's great to see you play the games you hv kept on hold for long such as u played Detroit. I think you shld also pick up the games u left... one of my favs from ur channel was definitely 'Dark deception ' . It was fun to watch nd even had an intriguing storyline. Perhaps 2 chapters hav came out pretty long ago. I'd really want you to play that one!
am really liking this game so far, reminds me of soma, the amnesia games, and the tv show the rig. i could never play it myself because too stressful lol, i applaud you
Monsters clumsily imitating speech that comes off as both horrifying and funny is great. Also, McLeary reminds me of that guy from Gothic 2 trailer at times.
My only major gripe so far is that all interactions are basically "press these buttons to see your character do stuff in a short cutscene". It would be nice if you had to manually fix things, like that fuse replacement could be a short minigame where you use mouse/controller to remove a bad fuse and put a good one in. Nothing complicated, just some manual operations to let the player do something other than walk between locations.
I find some of the interactive stuff a bit redundant, things like climbing ladders and throwing stuff will obviously be used frequently but in the previous video you had a prompt to make Caz warm himself in front of a heater and I'm curious to know if you ever have to do that again
I am REALLY enjoying this game, I feel like the tension is generally done really well and as others have said, having the monsters be Scottish cthulus is very good. I thought it woild be a 2 parter with the helicopter being endgame (fighting rennick) but that was a nice surprise!
Really enjoying this game so far!! Was a bit worried about the linearity at first, but honestly it's doing it excellently. Looking forward to the next part!
I have a theory about how this game will end (haven’t seen the whole thing) and maybe it’s obvious… I think Caz is already infected because we’re seeing these distorted images every now and then in story, which we also saw when he got close to the mass on the stairs. I really like this game though, and John, you add a lot to the commentary! “Jedi mind trick” is my favorite 😂

This could totally be a series caz somehow survives and becomes part of a team that hunts down these Monsters, all the super human shit hes done definitely feels like all the "normal people" who became part of resident evil zombie hunting team
Really enjoying this one, it's great to hear a bunch of regional accents rather than generic transatlantic.
The enemy really reminds me of the shimmer in Annihilation
Yeah, the devs cited the film and book as one of their inspirations.
First time in a while where having to wait two days for the next part stings a little ahah- I usually watch your videos while I'm getting on with artwork but this one has me so hooked the paintbrush has not left the jug! Great playthrough so far and the Scottish accents are so warm and homely
The Scottish accent really helps with it not being too scary tbh I like that; Caz’s run is so goofy lmao
Your sarcastic commentary elevates the gameplay to a whole new level
John is having too much fun with their accent lol. This is such a good concept for a game because being stuck like this out in the ocean? No ❤️
I watched another play through and it wasn't the same - I needed your constant criticsm and snarky remarks hahah
I’m so excited for this! I really enjoyed the last part!!
There's an ice cream truck in the neighborhood and the ever increasing sound of those chirpy tunes while my brain tells me it comes from the game is quite adding to the creepy environment ngl
Honestly i've missed this kind of videos on your channel
love the atomsphere in the game soooo much
This game makes me feel like I did when I first watched The Thing: scared to turn off the lights but also loving how good it is from the setting to the pacing to the voice acting (and the Thing-inspired monster design!) Thanks for playing this one, it’s an amazing watch!
John attempting a Scottish accent never fails to crack me up
John, you're throwing too many objects so you don't get to hear all the things the monster says.
The monster designs are so good!
The rig boss- or "ship captain" as he likes to call himself- turning into a huge mutation brings me back to Halo 1 when the captain gets taken over by the flood :)
Love a good nautical horror tale
Loving this game so far! The atmosphere the characters the monsters the voice acting its all really good for me atleast i really hope they dont fumble the ending
I WAITED FOR THIS SO MUCH
This looks like an awesome game. It's also nice to see John playing something he seems to enjoy.
id be so scared to play that ahah loving the graphics and the atmosphere of the rig with the rain is terrific
Im really enjoying it so far, and the monster design reminds me of the fish guy from RE Village. Please play Crow Country next! It does remind me of older RE games as well and looks really cool!
I missed watching you play horror games, John. I love your videos, can't wait to watch the rest or the series. :)
The hiding in the vents and throwing an item combo brings me back to the Granny days
oh man this is making me wanna watch the thing again; love the voice acting a lot and overall mood/vibes/setting
This is such a cool game, thank you for playing it!
am really liking this game so far, reminds me of soma, the amnesia games, and the tv show the rig. i could never play it myself because too stressful lol, i applaud you
The glowing pustule things make me think of 'The Color Out of Space' story.
Sheesh what a ride, this this is def exceeding my expectations
Monsters clumsily imitating speech that comes off as both horrifying and funny is great.
Also, McLeary reminds me of that guy from Gothic 2 trailer at times.
I really love that they didnt kill off everyone just yet
Welcome John you keep my spirits up each day so Thanks for that 🙂
14:27 is terrifying, yet i kinda feel bad for whatever that thing is 🤓
I am REALLY enjoying this game, I feel like the tension is generally done really well and as others have said, having the monsters be Scottish cthulus is very good. I thought it woild be a 2 parter with the helicopter being endgame (fighting rennick) but that was a nice surprise!
Just finished part one this morning. Excited for part two!
Really enjoying this game so far!! Was a bit worried about the linearity at first, but honestly it's doing it excellently. Looking forward to the next part!
Makes me think of the colour out of space. Also this game is terrifying 😬
Thrilled to see more of this!
man u made my day - i need this after work
I love the markiplier choose your own adventure run animation 😂
I have a theory about how this game will end (haven’t seen the whole thing) and maybe it’s obvious… I think Caz is already infected because we’re seeing these distorted images every now and then in story, which we also saw when he got close to the mass on the stairs. I really like this game though, and John, you add a lot to the commentary! “Jedi mind trick” is my favorite 😂
yep, for sure. i don't think the distortion is a "sanity" meter, more like level of absorption/influence from the monster/entity.
I hope you've seen the third episode by now 👀
37:30 reminds me of that NPC dying in the electrified water back in Farcry. It still makes me laugh
