Actually, I didn’t learn from Gibli works a lot, instead I learnt from you. You are such a good teacher, always inspiring, detailed, and creative in many ways. i lost motivation in drawing because i felt like a liar doing reverse engineering on artworks i become fond of, and i thought i was too incompetent to continue drawing with just REing existing works. *Thank you* so much for sharing this video. It means a lot since I can finally get up and draw again. Hopefully I can improve a lot and someday would not need to reverse engineer other's artworks to feel good about my art. More powers and good health to you! 😁
lol People are constantly "Revers engineering" the works of others. It's literally the only way to draw/paint.

I've actually taught myself a lot from this method and I always thought it was really amateur-ish and like plagarism. But I think I understand from the perspective of reverse engineering. I'm really happy to know a professional background artist does it as well.
I was told to pick up pencil drawing first before drawing in watercolor by art students. But since I'm not a studio artist, I think I will be alright. I just want to make simple illustrations for my own children's books. I'm really happy you shared this
Personally I use disney art books as that is what I know and I draw inspiration from Tonko House.
People always throw this plagiarism thing around, but in my opinion copying work isn't bad as long as you don't show to other people saying "LOOK WHAT I MADE" and do it only for training and studying purposes.
Look at all the Renaissance artists they all copied each other, Peter paul rubens copied all of Michelangelo's work and analyzed his work that is how artists learn and how you should learn or you won't get better, its one of the fastest ways you can improve just drawing from a painting will teach you a lot of things.

Yes! I do that all the time too and I think that that's a way of improving your work other than just simply practice. You can practice painting an egg the same way for 1000 times but if you don't think and take notice from how others see and paints the egg, you will never be able to break past your limits! :) And btw, coming from an art student, I can see why most of them asks you to pick up pencil first as you need to learn how to control tones and values in b&w first before you can do so in colour, and the more you draw with pencil, the more skillful you will get at everything else.(at least for me) Sounds tedious and stupid but picking up how to draw with pencil will really build up your foundation and benefit you in the long run. Of course, you are still free to do whatever you want!^^ and have fun making art and illustrations! :-)
I agree with you on this.... It goes to everything on earth labelled as Learner... See - copy - practice - analysis - mistake - practice. Combination of 2 to 3 artist's styles give you the best unique choice of your own style! I said it's good learning habits!
I understand. Your 'reverse engineering' process is often taught in academic art colleges for young painters and sculptors to learn how a master you are interested in did something. As you say how they solved problems you will face. I think it is also important to bring out from what you said is that the point is not only just to replicate or copy but later on to look at various sources of inspiration and make it your own once you learned. This way you can learn but also create something which is eventually unique to yourself. I think this is why your work is so appealing. It has a connection to Japanese animation art but there is something unique also.
I am actually interested in filmmaking and directing, but I have a passion for animation which your videos fuel and ignite even more. Thank you for the quality content and for sharing your wisdom with the world.

I found this video from your "Bloggish Video" Playlist and it's one of the first videos from you I've watched so far. I'm completely new to Watercolor, and was feeling a bit lost as to where I should be searching for information, but this video helps me greatly for it covers one of the best ways I can expand my visual library.

This video comes at a very opportune time for me! I'm very interested in drawing backgrounds and painting, but I have mostly drawn the human form in my few years of self-taught art and I am not sure where to start with backgrounds. Thanks so much for this video!
Alt K I am in the exact same situation! The human form is so popular in our culture that backgrounds are like...not really appreciated as they should be, I feel.
Same here, I pretty much only draw women and whenever I stray from that I'm so dissapointed with it that I go back to what I know which is a habit I really want to break. The weather where I live has been great lately so later this week I'll try to go out and draw buildings and stuff from life, they'll probably come out looking horrible but at least it's a first step. Backgrounds and scenery in animation is amazing, I've been really inspired watching artists who draw them

I found this advice to be super helpful. I've taken a couple of great art classes and feel like my art is going in the right direction, but my next goal is how to move forward and develop a style that I can apply to what I'm interested in painting and drawing. I'll definitely take your advice and use some of these books as references to pick and choose elements that I can incorporate into my own toolbox.

Great video! Even though I don't make watercollor illustration (I enjoy to see , but I don't have enough tallent to make them ) I love to see the paintings creation process that you artits have, especially the Miyazaki's ones that I'm huge fan (I'm reading his book Starting Point, that's more a book about his thoughts on the animation industry than his creation process, but still a great book).

I bought "A sky longing for memories" last year and been since using it in conjunction with looking at hq stills of animes I like to construct my own style, granted I still have a long way to go but I'm enjoying myself on the way, I'm mainly an animator but because I get stressed a lot, I prefer to paint backgrounds to de-stress myself, I will look into more books to learn more approaches from the pros, but of course your book will be one of the first. Amazing job on the Susume Carolina comercial, it was amazing (I didn't know Colorido used TVPaint, I thought they used Retas or Clip Studio)

lol These are the same exact books and things I used and did when I fist started. And as a result, I got really good quick and paint in a very similar style to yours.
I noticed a lot of people claim to be influenced by Miyazaki and Ghibli but few show a true understanding of the style and how it works. It's not simply cute, it's all about lighting.

the first time i went to japan i found one of Miyazaki's storyboard books and snapped it up immediately, i just fell in love with it even though it wasnt my favourite of his movies, and then the second and third time i went, i sought out more of them and bought as many as i could. i now have almost all of the ones that have been published save for one that i believe has gone out of print… butbtheyre absolutely fantastic, for fans of the movies and aspiring artists...
They also brought an exhibition here to Taiwan of storyboard and sketch cells, numbering close to 3000 i believe, and with the exhibition they published this huge book with all the artwork featured. Of course, i bought a copy when i went to the exhibit, and now its one of my most prized possessions

My recommandation for fellow struggling artists would absolutely be 'A middle-earth traveller' from John Howe. And 'The art of Howls moving castle' is definitely on my wish list now.

Thanks for answering this! Funny thing is that I have some background books but never looked at them with the intent of reverse engineering, maybe that's why I couldn't learn as much as I wanted from them, guess I'll have to learn how to read art ;)
It's really hard to draw backrounds but this is really helpful and useful
I'll probably practice drawing a lot of backgrounds
