  • Die Stem van Suid-Afrika (The Call of South Africa) was the national anthem of South Africa. Lyrics by C.J. Langenhoven. Music by Rev. Marthinus Lourens de Villiers.
    Lyrics (Afrikaans):
    Uit die blou van onse hemel,
    Vit die diepte van ons see.
    Oor ons ewige gebergtes waar
    Die kranse antwoord gee,
    Deur ons ver-verlate vlaktes
    Met die kreun van ossewa
    Ruis die stem van ons geliefde,
    Van ons land Suid-Afrika
    Ons sal antwoord op jou roepstem,
    Ons sal offer wat jy vra:
    Ons sal lewe, ons sal sterwe
    Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika.
    English:
    Ringing out from our blue heavens,
    From our deep seas breaking round;
    Over everlasting mountains
    Where the echoing crags resound;
    From our plains where creaking wagons
    Cut their trails into the earth
    Calls the spirit of our Country,
    Of the land that gave us birth.
    At thy call we shall not falter,
    Firm and steadfast we shall stand.
    At thy will to live or perish,
    O South Africa, dear land.

    Beautiful melody. So sad it is associated with racism, meanwhile South Africa has never been so racist than under the new anthem.
    Hate is not Christs response to hate, I hope the country moves forward one day, and that this music as all of good that was done in the past will also remain in people's hearts.

    @fuerstF The Boers were Dutch, German and French. Boer is Dutch and Afrikaans for farmer. South-Africa was a Dutch colony, the most cities have Dutch names such as Johannesburg, Kaapstad (English translated to Cape Town), Pretoria, Bloemfonteyn etc. In the early 1800's Napoleon conquered a big part of Europe including Holland. England now occupied S-A for the Dutch but didn't return it. S-A wasn't in Dutch hands anymore, but there were still settlers, the boers.

    Die Stem became the South African national Anthem in 1936 not 1957. From 1936 to 1957 Die Stem was Sung with God Save the King/Queen. In 1957, the Die Stem became the only national anthem and remained so until 1994.

    On the contrary, he did South Africa a favour. FW de Klerk understood that apartheid wasn't sustainable; you can't oppress that many people for any extended period of time. SA was on the brink of civil war in the 1980s and by dismantling apartheid, it probably prevented SA from going the way of Rhodesia. Its current problems are largely a combination of hangover from apartheid and the abject failure of the ANC to address social problems, which de Klerk can hardly be held responsible for.

      It is NOT because of apartheid! Everything was better during that time, even for black people! They had their OWN schools, hospitals, loans for higher education. Even then they could go to university and study to become doctors, with lower marks required for them to pass. They were cared for and they were not slaves. Everything functioned ALOT better and there was WAY less corruption. So YOU do YOUR research before speaking about apartheid.

When we finally take notice of this fact, humanity can progress and become stronger. Until then, we are broken. We can all be proud of our cultures and heritages without feeling the need to stamp out someone else's or say they are inferior to us because they do not believe the same way, or speak like us or look like us.

We were once Africa's powerhouse and our growth rate has averaged that to when SA was in the great depression in the 1930s. We averaged 8%+ growth in the 60s and 10%+ growth in the seventies, yet we cant even hit 6% since 1994? how embarrasing. and then to make matters worse we're kicked out of our only homeland.. pathetic if you ask me RIP SA

    From our deep Seas breaking around;
    Over everlasting Mountains,
    Where the echoing Crags resound.
    From our Plains where creaking Wagons,
    Cut their Trails into the Earth,
    Calls the Spirit of our Forefathers,
    From the Land that gave us Birth.
    We shall not falter at your Call,
    Firm and steadfast, we shall stand!
    To live or to perish at your Will -
    South Africa - our beloved Land!
