I do prefer the Afrikaans version tho, but both versions are great and should come back as there is no racism in the song itself. Its all but South African pride for South Africa
South Africa and the USA have had similar histories. For instance both started as partly Dutch, and then British, colonies. It also seems almost like whatever happens in the one country, also happens in the other. For instance, in 1994 both moved more from isolation and into the international community. South Africa was with the first democratic elections, and the USA was with the Soccer World Cup. There have also been Americans and South Africans who have said that there should be more cultural exchanges between the two countries. (No politics.) What I thought of, is everywhere in that 'Call of South Africa' anthem, where it says 'South Africa' change it to 'America'. It still fits. And, can be a song of theirs.
There was also the song of the flag: Cradled in beauty forever shall fly In the gold of her sunshine, the blue of her sky South Africa’s pledge of her freedom and pride To her own selves true, and to God above Our faith shall keep what our hearts enthrone The flag of the land that is all our own. What I thought of here, is with three lines changed to: In the red and white of her liberty sunshine stripes, The blue of her starry sky. America’s pledge of her freedom and pride
And both had a controversial histroy of segregation, but both eventually rid themselves of legal segregation, but they both still need to rid themselves of de facto segregation due to decades of legal segregation. May both nations work to be shining beacons of equality one day!
Of course racial issues has to keep being brought into it! It's also typical of human nature to focus on negative things. Someone who studies racial issues in the USA and South Africa said that at times he is not sure which side of the Atlantic he is on. There should not be forced segregation, or forced integration.
Regarding more cultural exchanges - South Africans staying in the USA, and Americans staying in South Africa (includes 6000 in Cape Town) can have blendings of the two cultures. Examples of cultural exchanges that I thought of, are with pumpkin recipes, and country music.

It is also in Afrikaans: th-cam.com/video/wIiQSpiOHQM/w-d-xo.html It was first written in Afrikaans, and then in English. I know that the Apartheid regime use this anthem, but when you look at the lyrics and listen to the music it describes South Africa as a nation perfectly. If this was still the anthem, I would say it is tied for best along with Russia.
The melody sounds very familiar, but very foreign… I don't know how to describe it, but one minute, it sounds like something I've heard and could (almost) namej, then it sounds like something I've never heard. Déjà vu, if you will.
surprised that such a racist state didn't have a single word about white supremacy in their anthem while i am glad that south africa changed since then and i think their current anthem is better, i still like this anthem
It stopped being a colony all the way back in 1910 when it became the union of South Africa it was an independent dominion of the British empire it then became an independent republic in the 1960s and left Commonwealth in the 1960s and afterwards all world nations started to sanction off the country to kill the economy because of its racism which lasted till 1994 it became apartheid SA in the 40s even though the King was against segregation and the whole thing and that prompted the government to start a delete of the monarchy and in 1994 South Africa became an equal independent state from the Afrikaans and rejoined the commonwealth as a republic
the map is wrong, South Africa has neverr included South West Africa, let alone the Caprivi Strip. The lyrics were written by a second-language speaker, the reason the first stanza particularly works so well is that his language is the most modernized form of Anglo-Saxon, afrikaans, Norwegian is not far behind, but it includes southern Danish (English), Dutch, Flemish and bears a stronger relationship to Swiss German than actual German. The common source is The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, modern English is about 30% Anglo-Saxon. This is third only to "I vow to thee my country"-English national anthem, and Finlandia (see Joan Baez). But it is a world-beater. The Italians are the musical geniuses of the world but their national anthem simply repeates 'Italia' all the time. Canada's is boring and Britain's is gloomy and depressing. In German 'God Save the King' sounds far better, see German Imperial natiional anthem, it was the anthem of all the great empires but the British saw it as a funeral march.
What we should have done was offer the Boers a confederation; Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (ZAR) and Natalia working together as the Confederation of South Africa under the military protection of the British Empire. Personally, I think that would have been a much better solution, and would have prevented bad blood between the Boer (Dutch) and Anglo-Saxon kinsfolk.
@@dad9979 I disagree. It's a lovely anthem in English but you could just as easily substitute it for a Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, or American anthem if you got rid of the one line that outright says "O South Africa, dear land". Typical of human nature to focus on negative things, you see. And, to live in the past.

@mkeufish Oh ok, so the good old days.
@@captaincritter1898 wait so you are saying racism is good?
@@spoofered8674 Wait, are you saying it isn't?
It stopped being a colony all the way back in 1910 when it became the union of South Africa it was an independent dominion of the British empire it then became an independent republic in the 1960s and left Commonwealth in the 1960s and afterwards all world nations started to sanction off the country to kill the economy because of its racism which lasted till 1994 it became apartheid SA in the 40s even though the King was against segregation and the whole thing and that prompted the government to start a delete of the monarchy and in 1994 South Africa became an equal independent state from the Afrikaans and rejoined the commonwealth as a republic
Probably not a good thing to say this but-

General English
Beautiful!
the map is wrong, South Africa has neverr included South West Africa, let alone the Caprivi Strip.
This is dope. They shouldn’t have changed the melody

Most terrible regimes have the best anthems. Enjoying them doesn't mean you support the regime (or even the beliefs in the song)
This hits so different in Afrikaans. In English it loses its uniqueness, imho.
As an English South African, this song has more meaning
@MetalfolkClassicalMusicLover1165 There is only one kind of Australian, white.
@@dad9979 as an Afrikaans speaking Dutchie, the Afrikaans version has more meaning.
@@dad9979 I disagree. It's a lovely anthem in English but you could just as easily substitute it for a Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, or American anthem if you got rid of the one line that outright says "O South Africa, dear land". In Afrikaans, it has more South African characteristics and references and is unmistakably such.
