I have been self employ for over 35 Years, in this time I have learned how to deal with clients like that.First of all I would have mention that the car is not worth to restore , but if the owner was to insist I would have suggested to buy another car the same model in better conditions to start with, If the owner still insist to restore that car ,then I would have said [Quote] .... OK my charges are $100 AU per hour ,do not ask me how many hours are required to do the job right , the only thing I can tell you is that ''....going by past experience and jobs like it '' I could estimate (NOT A QUOTE ! ) you are possibly looking between $50 ,000 and 70,000 AU to dismantle and assembly , repairs, rust work, parts and paint (NO mechanical work !) . also I would have add.... I work to a standard ...NOT TO A PRICE ! + if you are to go ahead with the job I would need 25% of the estimate up front + a payment would be required every 100 hours of work that has been done on the car from a commencing date . If this is not followed, I will send the body in which ever conditions it is at the time back to you sir. I also will pay for the transport back to you and keep 15% of your deposit. I will guarantee my work and it will be done in a proper and skilled matter . this is what I am prepared to do . if you do not agree ..WELL that is called a door ( by pointing to the exit door).... please use it and get out of here thank you.
I think you nailed it! Except the door part. Then again, if he does not agree he is wasting your time and was not sincere in the first place. So you might be right there too! I think I will copy and print your advice for my future reference if you don't mind.. Thanks!
Never wait for money in restorations. In any restoration shop I ever worked at or now the shop I own, ALWAYS GET MONEY FIRST, then figure out the way to make that money get you to a point where if the customer doesn’t pay, YOU CAN ROLL IT RIGHT OUTSIDE! The best thing is to make customers aware of what the restoration could cost based on other restorations you’ve done. Asking for money will show a customers reaction and body language, right then and there you will know what you have. I personally mainly deal with repeat customers and word of mouth customers. This way you have an idea of who you have coming in the door.
My buddy just put me onto your channel today Pete! He says I found a guy just like you he wasn't kidding lol We mush be related lol I'm going to continue to watch your channel as I have a few cars to work on up here in Canada myself. Pete is the absolute best. I emailed him to tell him about my project and show the progress he helped me make. Pete emailed me back promptly with words of encouragement. Telling me to get r done. Im a construction worker paid on production. Every day the homeowners ask me to do so.ething for free. They look at me funny when i say "No i dont get paid by the hour, sorry"
I give an estimate with a a contract. I make it very clear that it is an estimate and that the price may very well change, but based on the estimated cost, I will divide the cost of the restoration or paint job into 3 installments. 1/3 up front, 1/3 when ready to be painted, 1/3 upon competition. If the price goes up, the last third has a supplemental cost that must be paid to get the keys.
I feel for ya.. Been self employed since 1986.. Lots of ups and downs.. Did a half dozen different things but started out working on cars.. Then scrap dealer.. Last 12 years lawncare.. I get people wanting me to work for close to nothing.. I just turn and walk away.. 50 years of being self employed has been nice.. My wife laughs when someone rips me off or at least tries.. For 5 years I tracked him down at the bar , work and a ton of certified letters.. One day I just tore it apart sold parts and scraped the rest.. 3 years later he sobered up and came around.. I was billing him $25 a day storage.. I told him I didn't know what happened to it.. He tried to sue me but it was way past the statue of limitations.. People are trip.. Just sayin
As a small business owner I understand your point of view. People/customers have big dreams and small budgets 😉. I do "speculation" restorations now - I own the car and when it's done I sell when I want to. This isn't my primary business, but it adds up nicely in the end. There is another business locally who specializes in muscle car "clones" and Chevy C10 pickups. He sells through the big auctions and does really well! Maybe an opportunity for you and your business? Pete, I believe you need to bail out of this job. Your mental health and well being are worth far more than the aggravation. I had an independent MB shop for over 20 years and I know that you will never get rid of all the problems in this vehicle. And then you will have to look at this customer every week for some recheck or good will repair. We used to call these jobs "rustorations". You cannot fix everything wrong with them, and have to decide what to fix and what to let go. The parts are very expensive- this is not a 55 Chevy. I had plenty of days like this, and most people do not understand how much time and effort go into a job like this. It would be a hard job even if was a well taken care of car, and sometimes the littlest thing can give the most grief. Do what you have to- come to some agreement with this guy, and send the car down the road.
I think you need to keep your cool Pete because all this anger and stressing out ain't good for you buddy get a deposit on the jobs before you start give the customer a ballpark cost of repairs then work and keep the customer informed of the progress and the problems never take on unknown costs of the repairs on your own shoulders work with the money you are given at an hourly rate most of all keep your cool it's not worth the strain on your body mate Rob
Pete am self employed to but I am a logger and believe it or not I do some body work on the side when! the weather's bad I know what it's like men never know how much you're ever gonna have in the bank from week to week
That kind of crap is what I make the customer pay half up front and then if they don't want to pay the rest then I stopped halfway through and they didn't have a half-done job
I'd NEVER do that kind of job for someone else!! I restored a Buick Regal for a customer once. It took over a years worth of work. Yep, I ended up getting fucked on the deal. That was almost 30 years ago. I've yet to restore another vehicle for someone other than myself. People don't have a fucking clue about how much effort and work goes into vehicle restoration!!! Therefore, they don't appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears you put into those kind of jobs. Then of course they don't want to pay you. It's just not worth the bullshit!!!
Your problem is that it is all custom work and very hard to price up front when not sure of costs. On the other hand many dont like an hourly charge thinking you will inflates hrs. What to do. Restore youre own cars and then sell the whole car done
Polish sausagemobile. I have a neighbor who wants to bring a bucket to me and pay for a little work at a time while I keep his POS at my house. I told him sure, no problem but... you'll have to pay me storage fees on top of work fees monthly up front, otherwise the car will be parked on the city street if you miss a payment. He ended up conning someone else to store his junk. If a person can't put their money where their mouth is, then they aren't saying anything.
I have several people that want to bring their cars and trucks to my shop and put them in line -- FREE STORAGE while they wait -- I say -- Your house is good storage for it, call me in 6 months and we'll see if Im ready.. NO MORE FREE STORAGE AT SWRNC!
You're one of the last real body shops. Your talents on 1 to 10 are pressing real hard against 10 in my opinion. I enjoy your videos cuz you're a freaking artist that calls himself a body man. How stupid is somebody to be lucky enough to get their car in your shop and then they screw you around with some money? Either they want it done right or they need a damn production shop. People suck nowadays.
I don't know pete but judging by the way he demanded, rightly, money from the car owner, said owner had better pay if he knows what's good for him. Pete to add to the seriousness of your demand you should also be holding a tyre iron in a menacing way.
There is no way in hell I'd have tackled that job! I'm pretty handy and have done floor pans and shit but that's just too damn much! My hats off to you.
Being self employed is not what people think , l always say that employees. That used to own a business make the best employee because they realize how hard it is to run a business
Its ok to do the work if the people would pay what they owe, it's when they won't pay and you have to put their cars on hold and store them and then work on them then store them, and it takes years to finish because of THEM! It's not fair to me the small business guy to have these issues....
If this car was an 300 SL Gullwing Mercedes from the 1950's, I would restore the car no question. You have to ask yourself if this car is worth restoring, being a shopping jeep. Money up front for work to be done is the way to go. If the customer cannot pay, storage fees apply on a weekly basis. I find it strange that a customer wants the restoration done without having a budget allocation beforehand to keep the project going to completion or a deal in place with you so you can fit other projects in to make a living. I believe the Salvation Army is into charity. Maybe the owner should approach them to restore his car.
Ive been self employed in my own field of work for just over 30 yrs so yes have seen those problems and as the saying goes got the tee shirt and and seen the video,,,,,,,,bummer,,,,,,being self employed is not all milk and honey a lot of folks think
i got 2 chevy pu i am going to sell both are rust free trucks plus have parts for them just not going to do any thing with them plus going to have a lot of 78 to 80 camaro body parts for sell
Doesn't really matter what he's restoring as long as he's getting paid to restore it I haven't seen trouble with customers bringing me stuff and then not falling through with their payment plan or payments I feel you man but you got to I just got to keep doing little jobs and junk jobs and s*** I don't like to do I pay the bills like you said some days are better than others and some weeks are worse than others that love watching your videos
Pete, I am in the same boat as you, as I'm self employed & only my wife works with me. I've been a mercedes specialized mechanic since 1981 and would have also told this guy NOT to restore this POS! Of course, the "Fixing" of cars is the easy part....Most of your (and my) frustrations come from owners who are either unreasonable or just plain delusional
Pete, some people just need to be pencil whipped because, they will pencil whip you in a heart beat. They just don't know it took you a lifetime to build a shop penny by penny to service them and the ones like him before him.
It'll cost more to restore all that rust ( and your'e right the car is a plie of shit at its foundation ) than to buy another car . Honestly you could have told the owner just to walk away from it- OR you could have said "I wont touch that car " (because you learned your lesson with the yellow 55 Buick).
Well Pete apparently forgot about that lesson on the buick. It happens because we as humans want to give other humans the benefit of the doubt, even if it might bite us on the tailpipe again.
Hey Pete you and Minnie are the shit i also am self employed my wife helps me and i go through the same shit from work and then having words with my beautiful about biz.wtf? If you need a break you and Minnie pack up come to lake of the Ozarks its beautiful!!!!!!!
Sucks that you let it come to that. I'd say your idea of essentially him buying chunks of your time ahead of time is the way to go. Sounds like you're not exactly in a position to enforce that, or you would have from the start.

"Am I right or wrong?"
"Yes"!
Why would you have dreamed about moving to moab utah since you were a kid whats in moab utah
I'm sorry Pete ..hope things get better soon.
your nutz for working that hard for the last 30 years
Pete am self employed to but I am a logger and believe it or not I do some body work on the side when! the weather's bad I know what it's like men never know how much you're ever gonna have in the bank from week to week
That kind of crap is what I make the customer pay half up front and then if they don't want to pay the rest then I stopped halfway through and they didn't have a half-done job
Pete there's so many idiots out there you have the right attitude you have to start asking if they have the money
Pete I would not touch that pile of shit with a 20 foot pole no way would I even think of restoring a car like that AT ALL!!
Hey Pete do you watch Bad Chad ‘s videos on TH-cam?
DARN, I "messed" up. NO WORK, NO PAY! WHO can "WORK" anymore? NO JOB, NO PAY! (National HELP?).
Your Polish We looks like H.R. Pufnstuf!
Are you attracting any insurence work from around Moab yet?
NO! This town is dead for that type of business.. Actually this town is dead for mostly anything productive. In that aspect MOAB SUCKS!
This is not Julie Brown fron Douglas County. There must be 100's of Julie Browns.
I would never pick and deliver.
I would not touch the rust bucket.
Its ok to do the work if the people would pay what they owe, it's when they won't pay and you have to put their cars on hold and store them and then work on them then store them, and it takes years to finish because of THEM! It's not fair to me the small business guy to have these issues....
Peter Tommasinis' reply might be the right answer to this in the future.
Why would anyone restore that piece of crap? Rare is not enough. And I want major coin before I turn a bolt. I ain't a bank. I ain't your daddy.
You got this my my man!
No way I would do that job . Best to get paid up front if he going to be like that about be sure charge him more than usual too
Yo that fucked up swearing strawberry made me laugh
If this car was an 300 SL Gullwing Mercedes from the 1950's, I would restore the car no question. You have to ask yourself if this car is worth restoring, being a shopping jeep. Money up front for work to be done is the way to go. If the customer cannot pay, storage fees apply on a weekly basis. I find it strange that a customer wants the restoration done without having a budget allocation beforehand to keep the project going to completion or a deal in place with you so you can fit other projects in to make a living. I believe the Salvation Army is into charity. Maybe the owner should approach them to restore his car.
FOR "1" car? TOOLS? Price? PAINT? Just ALL "them" hidden costs? (Sounds like a "career" to ME!)
Yeah....without that rotisserie the chicken will never drive down the road straight...
On a job like this- TRUE!
Desperate times call for desperate measures in Moab!
You did it ALL to yourself Pete....
Looks like a car from Canada with that much rust...... Enjoy the video 👍
dude its just gonna get worse. nobody`s working full time much anymore and small business and self employed are suffering most.
Fuck it let them pay or buy one done. I got one customer that owes me $1200 and another one $600. Lol
Same problem 1959 Vette Peter Michele screwing me out of $800, on brakes and duall quad 283 carbs🚩🤡
No I wouldn’t take it on at home! I’d do a first generation mustang like you did on your channel but not a Mercedes. I’m not a fan of European cars.
Ive been self employed in my own field of work for just over 30 yrs so yes have seen those problems and as the saying goes got the tee shirt and and seen the video,,,,,,,,bummer,,,,,,being self employed is not all milk and honey a lot of folks think
like your check in the mail
i got 2 chevy pu i am going to sell both are rust free trucks plus have parts for them just not going to do any thing with them plus going to have a lot of 78 to 80 camaro body parts for sell
the pu's are 78 and 79
Why anyone would want to restore a 76 Mercedes Benz is beyond me, this is German junk at its worst!
Give you a lot of credit, the stress of restoring that car no thanks
I would find another to restore.... and you don't need to apologize for laughing!
Nothing worse than waiting on money
Pete, some people just need to be pencil whipped because, they will pencil whip you in a heart beat. They just don't know it took you a lifetime to build a shop penny by penny to service them and the ones like him before him.
Nope no way wouldnt do it.....unless the price was right.....
Yes I laughed..... because I've been there
Nothing worse than a peckerhead that won't pay you keep up the good work Buddy
Give me a 55 56 57 chevy any day.
ODD "thought", but when "some" one bought that car for 2000.00$(new) ; WHAT has changed? (CERVESAbug?).
I would not work on that car...I would rather burn it.
I wouldn't touch that car with a ten-foot pole!
Hey Pete you and Minnie are the shit i also am self employed my wife helps me and i go through the same shit from work and then having words with my beautiful about biz.wtf? If you need a break you and Minnie pack up come to lake of the Ozarks its beautiful!!!!!!!
🤣🤣🤣Burn it in wood fire for a couple of days and scrap it.
worked all my life welding you are dead on
Sucks that you let it come to that. I'd say your idea of essentially him buying chunks of your time ahead of time is the way to go. Sounds like you're not exactly in a position to enforce that, or you would have from the start.
People wanting shit done for nothing
Polock less trying to give you the square instead of a round pete
Give it to them Pete show me the money birches 🤓🤪😂🤣👌🏼🇦🇺💪🏼🦷
Yep get money up front because assholes ruin it for your honest cust.!
