I have been in business for 35 years and have a one man shop which I do it all from metal work to painting and 2 of the best car builders in the USA, Foose and Kinddit ,Not only uses bondo but they spread a coat on the entire car and block it to perfection which is the only way to get it arrow straight so if they can get a large repaired panel straight with no filler at all they know something that the best builders on the planet dont,Keep giving it hell Pete,I will keep watching.
Hi Pete things like this is the reason people can't afford to fix our old cars, I'm 74 years old and guess I never will be able to fix my 56 chevy but I learn as much from you as I can. THANKS MY FRIEND
Pet thank you for the information you provide. I'm a 62 yes old man just retired and I'm going to start working on a 1995 honda 750 nighthawk to restore it. I'm taking your advice get up and do it. If I mess it up so be it I'll start over again. Thanks for the videos and the straight forward attitude.

Chip Foose uses bondo and so do all the other famous designers/body shops/restoration shops...and they use fiberglass, and they use Tig and Mig welders. I built 2 custom street rods from scratch...first one took 6 years the second 4 years. I built the frame, the suspensions and the bodies (wood mold covered with hand-laid fiberglass) and both of them won many awards including "Best of Show" and a big trophy at the Portland Roadster Show. The first one I built in a horse stall that I turned into a shop using wood pallets and plywood screwed on top for the floor...no insulation, only 2 outlets and it was only 15' X 20'. Don't let these guys with their noses up in the air discourage you and make you think you can't do it...because if I can, you can! Oh, and I had very little tools. A compressor and a drill press (drill press came later), a belt sander and hand sander, some files, an old Arc Welder...yes Arc Welder not a fancy Mig welder. In fact I built both frames with the arc welder and all the suspension parts...yes it was more clean-up but stronger welds. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT...JUST PRESS HARD AND BE PATIENT! I work for a auto manufacturer that makes body systems for all major manufacturers . Sometimes the dies have contaminates that show up in parts as little dents and imperfections. We have a metal finish department, so brand new cars have bondo in them
My friend Pete I watch all your videos and you have helped me a lot I just put rear quarters on my 1973 nova hatchback and with your help I think they are pretty good thank you I made my slap hammer out of a old file never used it but I like to make tools thanks for the videos

@@timgiddey You know what the problem is don't you??? Sometimes when you give people a good resonable price and they already got prices higher then yours they think your ripping them off because your cheaper then the other guy.. Happens all the time... best thing to do with guys like this is let them keep walking and get ripped off by the more expensive shop!
Pete, you are wrong about 'interns'. They are not 'free', they cost the business money because most of don't have a clue when they walk through the door, most fuck up stuff like sweeping the floor. You can spend years teaching them and then they demand more money then they are worth or jump ship for the first shop that offers 50 cents more per hour.
Talk about those guys "oversteering a skid". We've probably all seen cars that were "Mondo Bondo' buggies", where the car appeared to be nothing BUT Bondo, but Bondo has its place. To get all bent out of shape because there's a little filler in some spots is blowing things out of proportion. I'm restoring my '74 Super Beetle...I'm trying to hammer things out as much as possible, but I'm also using filler when and where I need to.
I have been a bodyman and painter for 26 yrs . There is nothing wrong with bondo if its put on right and worked right . People screw up during the wet sanding process , they sand through the primer and get the bondo wet . They also dont prep the area correctly . That starts the down hill problems . It must be sealed before it gets the primer put over it . As long as the bondo is protected it will be fine . I only use Du Pont and PPG products . They cost more but they are worth it . You tell em Pete!
I've welded for years, both MIG and TIG steel and stainless steel. For something like a fender, there's no advantage to TIG welding unless you're doing silicone bronze rod & that's not as strong as a regular weld. I've done everything from stainless steel grease hoods to joists & I-beams. Personally, I prefer to use JB weld instead of bondo because it's stronger on vehicles. I think it's hilarious to suggest patching up rusted areas with stainless so it won't rust there again. It's even more funny when people say you can't weld steel and stainless together!! (No difference actually) But hey, that's just me. I have to do the trunk area on my 1968 cougar to finish the restoration of the body. In all seriousness, the best way to do body work was leading it, but sadly enough that's illegal in most places today. & Yes, I know how to do that as well.
My friend Pete is a class act!!! If I wanted work from so-called metal worker, he better be replacing all that factory steel with .080" stainless or better yet titanium :).
Pete, a little over 30 years ago, I was had the opportunity to learn gas and hammer welding from old craftsman. I have done tig, mig and gas on sheet metal applications mainly for workability of the weld/parent metal. I have seen the extreme metal workers you speak of. I got a buddy who sent his bubble top off to one of these guys......over 2plus years and 40G the metal fabrication is almost done...beyond the .010 of the people in the “extreme” sector of the hobby even care. Personally, I’m a paint guy....90 percent of folks would or couldn’t see the difference between a good job and a crap job that’s been color sanded and buffed the crap out of. Most can’t see the problems with new OEM finish.
For years I was under the impression that using bondo was the cheap and easy way out. It wasn’t until I started watching your videos Pete, (for the last 10 years) that using bondo is very practical and often necessary! Keep up the amazing work buddy!
Thx Pete I can't even afford to go out and buy the tools you suggest or recommend. Nor can I afford to have a concourse restoration done on my 1969 chevy truck. So I will be watching listening and learning how to get it (the truck done). How do you eat an elephant one bite at a time how do you do truck resto one nut bolt rust removal welding at a time
i look at how much damage is on the part to how much for a used part lot of the time if lucky like me i end up finding a rig for free or cheap witch makes it cheaper to replace but some times i have to fix it because it is just to hard to find a good parts car this is y i do a lot of chevy's because i get them all the time . after doing it a long time i know what will work with what ur building like switching a 65 chevy to cable linkage use a cable linkage out of a nova with the 65 mount works perfect just need to bend the pedal a little to fit perfect with the right throw to it .
They are no more arrogant than many other profession like doctor or lawyer's and Hollywood LOL, skill is a skill my friend Pete just like yours, I have told you before you may have by passed you real skill my friend Pete, love your channel!
I am here to learn, so that I can do it myself. I am hard of hearing so his "rant and raving" is music to my ears. To the ones that don't like Pete or his videos ... Why are you here?? Thanks Pete!!!!
So what? You're talking about two different client bases. One are normal people the second are super rich people. These aren't the same worlds. Chip Foose uses Bondo - or whatever product 3M gives him for free - and he has three Riddler Awards and is considered the best custom car builder in the world. For those that don't, if you can find somebody rich enough to buy into a total metal shaping job, good for them. I hate to say it but I do see some envy in your rant here. They are playing the car game like Gucci plays apparel. You're playing the car game like Walmart sells clothes. Two different worlds. Why hate on them if they can find some rich asshole to pay $5,000 for a purse? Sounds like great marketing to me.
Bondo gets a bad name from all the half ass body guys that just slap on 2 gallons of bondo to fill a caved in quarter panel. I bought an old fox body mustang for parts and notices when I dropped the head liner the top of car was caved in. You couldn't tell from the outside. A good thump to the inside of the roof and big cracks formed across the outside surface of the roof through the primer. A couple more whacks and chunks were coming out lol. Didn't matter to me because I bought the car for $300 just for the engine and transmission.
My friend ! I've recently found ur vids, been watching all of em. The info from start to finish is invaluable to me as I will b utilizing them to help me wit restoring my car very soon. Thank u so much 4 teaching us poor, simple folk how 2 do it rit wit a lit extra get up off ur ass to get er done!!!!
how many of our classic cars would end up in the crusher if we only let the rich people tell us whats right. I've been saying to my people I dont want to spend $150 k in tools and equipment to build a $20k car! i freekin love your channel , no bs
Man love this Chanel thank you soo much!! Can’t wait to paint 80’ vw rabbit!! And to use the kwickwire you suggested! Please keep making this Chanel grow!!
Bodyfiller used correctly is perfectly fine, these metal shops are great but not everyone can afford to have that kind of work done. Great for the people who can!
@@diyautoschool I used to be a painter at a "Metal" shop. I would always say, once the paint is on nobody will ever know if there is a smidge of filler or if its all metal blah blah blah...Get the metal close/repaired, fill, prime, block and then put the money elsewhere IMO.
In the end 99% of regular people won't care if it's bondo or someone hammer and dollied it for 5 years. This kind of arrogant attitude is why the younger guys are not interested in restoration or Hotrodding. They have truly ruined the culture.
I've done trucks ten years and used bondo to get things perfect and I'm talking ten Canadian winters and then areas I used bondo In are still in great shape you never know I used bondo 🤷
Pete,I have been in the business for 35 years and know some of the best builders in the USA, They build half million dollar cars which I think is crazy as hell to put that kinda of money in any build but if that's there deal fine, respect to them but they use bondo,Hell Chip Foose uses bondo tell to call him and tell him he dont know how to build a car.
Working on a 71 VW bus that was absolutely slathered in bondo.. the entire right rear was rust holes crammed full of bondo and panted over. The left corner was barely bulled out after some gink drilled about a hundred 1/4 inch holes in it.. then crammed it all with bondo. I blame the shop more than the previous owners.. but damn people!!
I didn't mean to make a bondo buggy is doing it right, what I meant is do the best metal work you can by hammer and dolly, replaceing panels, welding up holes other people left, and then minor bondo or only what's needed to finish the job.. I would NEVER tell anyone to build a BONDO BUGGY!
@@diyautoschool Yes, totally understand, the issue for me that you have covered several times is that there are "professionals" out there charging top dollar for crap work. All of the bondo is gone, metal is going back in, but this is one hell of a steep learning curve.
@@diyautoschool Facts . Happens all the time. Keep up the good work My Friend Pete.
Its cute how Uncle Pete gets angry and jelly at the idea that someone does something different, maybe even better than him.
Thanks for your motivation, Pete. I just got back on my truck last night.
When you go to the community college's that teach trades they usually do the work cheap or free when you let ... students...work on a car .
God bless you man...from an old mud slinger still going strong today...!!
You friggin tell them Pete iam with you
These damn jerkoff "BETTER THEN YOU PEOPLE" Suck!
(No difference actually)
But hey, that's just me. I have to do the trunk area on my 1968 cougar to finish the restoration of the body.
In all seriousness, the best way to do body work was leading it, but sadly enough that's illegal in most places today.
& Yes, I know how to do that as well.
Thats funny Chip Foose probably one of the most famous car designer uses bondo albeit not much but he still uses it.
Your the real Body man. I've learned alot watching your videos
Same as wood craftsman that uses no nails nor wood filler, and the ones that use nails and wood filler. To each his own.
Pit can you tell whats the video you visited the black boy for a suggested restoration I can't find it
Great vid 2 metre Peter. We call it bog in Australia. None the less, IMO, as long as the panel is prepped properly there's no problem with it
My friend Pete is a class act!!! If I wanted work from so-called metal worker, he better be replacing all that factory steel with .080" stainless or better yet titanium :).
Fantastic video Pete as always and some very very interesting points raised here with my friend pete
That guy knows how to make money! I wonder if his work is as good as his hustle
You do A great job working on car like your tips and hand hate the haters you the man buddy
They are no more arrogant than many other profession like doctor or lawyer's and Hollywood LOL, skill is a skill my friend Pete just like yours, I have told you before you may have by passed you real skill my friend Pete, love your channel!
My friend Pete he's doing it right getting her done
I'm with you Pete 💯... I wish you would just expose these arrogant jerks..
Love your videos thanks for helping me learn
Fiberglass is awesome too.
I've got a 47 1 ton dodge with a back fender caved in, tried wailing on ot wont pop out, any ideas?
I am here to learn, so that I can do it myself. I am hard of hearing so his "rant and raving" is music to my ears. To the ones that don't like Pete or his videos ... Why are you here?? Thanks Pete!!!!
Dudes who hate Bondo saw Roadstershop's Maximus and took at way too seriously.
Pete is beast moooode love your work backyard builds all day
Sounds like great marketing to me.
is that a falcon hood in the background
Bondo gets a bad name from all the half ass body guys that just slap on 2 gallons of bondo to fill a caved in quarter panel. I bought an old fox body mustang for parts and notices when I dropped the head liner the top of car was caved in. You couldn't tell from the outside. A good thump to the inside of the roof and big cracks formed across the outside surface of the roof through the primer. A couple more whacks and chunks were coming out lol. Didn't matter to me because I bought the car for $300 just for the engine and transmission.
Exactly.. It's these CHOP SHOPS that give the real body man a bad name and rep..
they don't spread bondo but they will spray a thick layer of that polyester spray filler and block sand the whole car
Same thing as Bondo, really. Just thinner...
You guys are the best!! Thanks pete.
Get 'er done, Pete! I would appreciate it if you could do a video on how you blend the paint and clear on that VW.
we'ere not blending on the bug.. Im going to have to paint all the green... Ill have another car soon that will need blending...
There are now ads that interrupt your videos Pete. What's the situation on that?
Didn't they use lead as Bondo?
your real, keep up the good no great advice ,watch all of your videos
was the question in the title answered here somewhere?
Thank you Pete for defending our Industry.👍❤
so is Maxwell yours again or you fixing it for the lady ?
Bodyfiller used correctly is perfectly fine, these metal shops are great but not everyone can afford to have that kind of work done. Great for the people who can!
Only a Hand Full can afford that kind of work, and it's no better then anything else if the job's done RIGHT! What a JOKE, if you ask me...
@@appliancedude63 This is one reason for sure... It's to much TV REALITY SHOWS and to many ARROGANT STRONG HEADED PEOPLE
@@diyautoschool my friend Pete you're showing us how to do it right and we love you and your channel. Keep up the good work.
Always learning a lot of my friend Pete, great video as always mate 👍
I've done trucks ten years and used bondo to get things perfect and I'm talking ten Canadian winters and then areas I used bondo In are still in great shape you never know I used bondo 🤷
I think the real answer here is you should probably double your prices.
I wonder if THOSE shops use lead in repair work..?
I got your back pete. Good people are good people
Some cars come from the factory with bondo. bondo doesn't rust. Plus, you only use bondo as a last resort.
Thankfully there are resources like your channel that help we dummies out to do things correctly when overcoming these professional disasters.
lol awesome video. welcome back Pete!!
I want to drive my car asap. I'm trying to do the best job I can. Totally agree Pete. Sure Bondo can be misused, but 5 year to get your car back! Thais ridiculous. You could die waiting that long.
Man you rock..!!!! Keep on keeping on Pete.!!!!
great job ..keep up the work and videos thank you
Pete , isn't that your old bug you sold years ago & sent up to the northeast? I've been watching for years, Thanks bud!
Their lairs it almost impossible to not use body filler of some sort in some cases
