How to read and understand FEMA structure markings

- In this video, I quickly explain how FEMA, or any agency using the Incident command system marks buildings/structures in the event of a house to house search in and evacuation or disaster situation.
Please learn how to recognize these marks for your own preparedness in an emergency. Learning how to recognize and utilize FEMA shorthand can be helpful, and extremely useful.

saw enough of these in New Orleans after Katrina than I ever wanna see ever again...although your tutorial is way more detailed than I recall any of those markings being. Most were simple, and done in orange spray paint

I thought this was an excellent description of the marking procedure. The most concise and clear description heard to date.
So when the crap hits the fan, people should run out and X the houses in the neighborhood. In the midst of all the chaos as troops sweep through, they may see the marks and figure some other group had already been there and hauled everyone off. Meanwhile, you are hiding in your tornado safe spot in the basement.

I don't understand why this is being done except for the President that happens to be in office at the time doesn't have to be responsible if things go wrong, like Bush was. I am a Hurricane Andrew victim. My husband was a reservists out of Homestead AFB active at the time. Alot of news stations kept reporting City of Homestead was hit so hard but in reality that just wasn't true. Naranja, Florida City, Cutler Ridge and so on were wiped out. We were Naranja right outside the base. The base was destroyed also. We stayed at our home even though it was destroyed. Camped there. Yes the National Guard was brought in but mostly for vandals. The government has lied to this day about the wind speed, deaths, tornadoes spawned from the hurricane and always will. We knew persons doing the weather on base, they told us what winds were when weather vane broke. Regardless, we stayed. We protected ours and neighbors in the hot dark nights and days. FEMA and whoever is affiliated can stay on their side and we will stay on ours.

William Kennison what color would use they have a different color then yours
Most of the ones I've seen are high visibility colors such as red, orange, yellow, green and blue. So it's pretty simple to figure out the color of the local unit and go from there. How much does a box of chalk and spray paint take up in your bug in kit when it comes to your life.

I used these for CERT Communities Emergency Response Teamwe also noted on right side that gas was shut off and electrical was disconnected.

The Internet and the cell phone towers will have to be put on hold for this kind of thing to occur. If it does,then we all just man up, and take them all out. If you don't man up, you might get killed. There are a lot more of us,than there are them. Way more.
+Bob Kerbs Yes, the way to tell if they have started Martial Law is when the Internet is down and cell phones are down. They will have to try to do martial law in areas because there is no way they can do it nation wide all at once, even if they had the entire Chinese army helping. There is no way this will be possible in States like Texas, Oklahoma, etc. so they would probably nuke much of the south west. Thousands of people already keep regular contacts around the US to determine whether zones have been locked down. They will sound the alarm when an area is cut off.
What I want to know is, really i would like to know what you think, if we have a family member in the military or law enforcement, does FEMA think they would turn on us?

Do teams normally put 0 0 in the bottom quadrant if there is neither found or do they leave it blank? Also same with the right quadrant if there is not dangers found? Thanks, very informational video
if nothing is found, 0 0 would be used in the bottom box. The right box could be a zero, a slash, or left blank, though blank is more likely to mean "unknown" than "nothing found"

If i were in a disaster and didn't want the cops/army coming to confiscate my guns, I would counterfeit a mark like that on my door just so they wouldn't feel a need to come in [uninvited.]

Were you taught to leave N/E besides indicators in the bottom quadrant? This was to notate that what you found had Not been Evactuated. In other words 2D N/E would be on an initial sweep for Survivors indicating that after the initial sweep, secondary crews know there are 2 bodies to be removed from this location. Just wondering how wide that was taught, since it wasn't mentioned? Be Safe.
They left that mark on our stained glass panel in our front door when our house flooded in 2016. Definitely the worst place to try and leave it, it was completely invisible until I was standing in just the right spot the next spring when we were getting the house ready to be demolished. It was a really odd feeling seeing it there. It looked almost like a yellow crayon was used which makes no sense you’d think they’d want it more visible.

After the tornado in Moore OK. in 2013 I noticed similar markings however, they were just plain X markings in either neon green or bright blaze orange. I do know that the National Guard, Marines, FEMA, and local rescue were involved in the search & rescue operations. Is there any reason why they didn't use the additional markings that you explained in this video.
+Derek Smith A friend of a friend was at that tornado. A "National Guard" soldier pointed an M16 at him while he was looking through wreckage of his house. He suddenly woke up that FEMA does not exist to help anyone except our slave masters.

How would the symbols/protocols differ if the structure is an abandoned store? Or factory? Warehouse or something like a mine or other atypical structure?
Same system. This is a generic marking system, not dedicated to any type of building. This system is primarily used for search and rescue or evacuation operations.
Knowledge is power in an emergency, and using it right.
Scottish rules issued in 1598 stated that on admission to the guild, every mason had to enter his name and his mark in a register.
There are two types of marks used by stonemasons.
Layout marks, which delineated the position of a piece of stone in the overall design. Since stone was usually worked at the quarry or in the masons' yard, rather than in situ, such marks were necessary for efficient operations. Medieval carpenters also used this sort of mark.
"Signature" marks that pertained to a particular mason or workshop. This is what is generally meant by the term. Merchants also had such marks, used to mark their goods.
The exact purpose of mason's marks is unclear, although it is generally assumed that they mark the working of a piece of masonry by a particular mason, in order to claim payment. Others are assumed to indicate the position in which a stone should be laid. It has also been suggested that marks indicate the origin of the stone, or the location in which it was worked.

In your video, it looks like you're using some type of crayon/chalk on the door, I remember my dad marking engine parts with a special red type crayon, but I don't remember what it was.
Can you provide the name of the type of marker used?
How do you know what he is saying is true! It seems interesting and truthful because its a new shine light being pointed at you, that's all it really is.
elaine ossipov in our field we call it keel, but also the crayon works well on any surface and will still mark on wet surfaces, however, it takes a couple of times to get a good mark. Maybe about 4 years ago,,i saw a u.f.o.hovering over walmart and a smaller vehiclle came from inside the biger u.f.o. and it was round and red,,,it hovered and went in a large circle over the walmart and went back inside,,it was several minutes happening,,,,sumiton alabama is where i saw this.

Can be any color, (none of the markings depend on color) but bright marking paint colors that are easy to see was the most common
@@AdventureOne thx. i was thinking in a shtf situation and you wanted your own residence left alone, you used yellow paint but everyone else had orange paint... it wouldnt keep you safe. wouldnt keep your residence left intact. in a forced evacuation situation and you didnt want to go, put the markings on your door to keep yourself hidden.

Not related to this marking sysem at all (or FEMA at all, as far as I know) I have heard they are for service providers (utilities, newspaper, etc.) I have not seen them in my area.

A mason's mark is a symbol often found on dressed stone in buildings and other public structures.
When traveling down the road and looking at signs not facing you on the other side of the road they will have markings or stickers color coated, for the military.

daschundloverable No. These are boarded up homes, 2 family that were/are run down. Depending on the 'neighborhood', even within a two (2) block radius, the homeless might crash there...(tolerance) From what I see, thaz not happening. There were quite a lot of them. The markings were similar, but different colors.
If not for Staten Island, we would have been WIPED OUT.

Last year in our county a fireman told my mechanic that 100 people went missing in one city here and yesterday I spoke to a woman who works at one (in a different town) told me that she works at a pantry for the homeless; but recently she said they had about 100 of these people and the number had dropped down to about 40. Have you seen what's happening with the homeless? As far as the houses go, they might be marked for demolition so the homeless can't stay there, such as what happened here with the 100 missing by the fireman. Shortly after that, that city became "federalized" to tear down those vacant homes.

redneck4life887 I'm not exactly sure, but what I do know is that jade helm exercises have been reported in Florida cities as late as three weeks ago. And also, Texas has ordered it's armed forces (national gaurd) to monitor jade helm for the protection on Texans rights.
