    Saw enough of these after Hurricane Katrina to last me a lifetime. Seen quite a few marked "DB"
    There's a house in my town with the marking still on their garage door.
    Great informational video.

      Outdoors With Shawn how many houses still have Katrina markings in the lower 9th ward. If you don’t mind me asking

      @@Mustang6971 not too sure, I don't live in NOLA. But I bet the number is more than I'd guess it to be.
      When I go to New Orleans, I stay out of the 9th ward.

      Outdoors With Shawn I wouldn’t go to the 9th ward as well also I’ve never been to NOLA I want to go how long after Katrina did you go or were you apart of the response team that went in immediately after.

    I used to teach FEMA X to 12-18 year olds as part of survival preparedness training, Even though we didn't do USAR....... it is still good to know. Good job on this topic.

    Good info for preppers, just don’t go adding the marks unless you are specifically trained in USAR and have actually been the ones to carry out the size-up and search of a building. It is imperative that this info be 100% correct in a large-scale USAR incident. (Retired FD captain and USAR member).

    Great coverage of the topic - I can't think of anything else to add to it!
    Though it had been nominally mentioned in previous training, my first real-world exposure to it was also Hurricane Katrina. Base civil engineering didn't bother searching the inside of our house, as one of our friends was in CE. They had been in contact with us and knew we had left the area ahead of the storm. The door had swollen shut from inundation of storm surge, so once unsealed, it would remain functionally unsecured until they were ready to permanently seal it pending it's complete demolition. There were several houses in our section that had been breached by storm damage. The ones closest to the Back Bay had their front walls almost completely ripped away, and looked like macabre doll houses.
    Upon reporting back into the area, we were given 72 hours to salvage what we could before turning it over to CE to be sealed. We had 8 feet of storm surge enter our unit, and we could carry in two hands what was salvageable from the first floor. There was a thick layer of mud deposited on everything, and the refrigerator had floated up and deposited itself precariously bridging the stove and an opposing upper cabinet. The stairs were already beginning to get soft, and mold was already starting almost everywhere. Half of the roof was peeled off, so almost everything in that half of the upstairs was ruined by rain water. We had two rooms almost untouched - spare bedroom and the office. We had to leave several large items behind, due to the condition of the stairs. When everything was said and done, we were able to fit what was left in one car load.

      Wow thanks for the info, amazing all you had left was one car load. I tell you, after watching that I told my wife we would never live anywhere under sea level, it was crazy to see the death and destruction. I watched both on TV and online, some hosting company that was down there set up live cameras from their floor in a high rise and live streamed the whole event.

      Shepherd Smith was the only national reporter that covered Biloxi that I can remember. Everyone was all about New Orleans, but we got the strong side of the storm at high tide, for a 28-foot storm surge. They got the weak side and they just couldn't handle the rain, or even a wet paper bag from the look of it. When we came back into the area, I was expecting the WROL that was being reported in New Orleans, but the Mississippi National Guard, Biloxi PD, and AF Security Forces had a reasonable level of order on the ground in their respective areas, given the scale of destruction.

    • @richard6133
      @richard6133 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We did get a little footage from the base uploaded during the storm, but it was relatively low res and blurry. However, we could clearly see the BX parking lot was flooded, and it was obvious that the water made it into the building.
