    Oh my gosh! I never know this and I'm old now (well, mid-30's) and how I wished I knew this strategy when I was in college. It's not too late tho. We all can still learn no matter what age and I'll apply this strategy as I read on. Thanks, Emma!

    I am not an academic, just a plain old student of life, but I always have a desire to be better and listening to people like Emma makes me feel like I want to learn more. However, having read through your comments I feel sad for some of you who just want to learn enough to pass your exams, achieve your goal, secure a good job and drift through life until retirement. Well, at 82 and never had the chance of a good education my advice is, do not give up on stretching your mind. Good luck to you all.

    The secret to reading and comprehending is that you need to imagine while reading. Imagine the sentences as you are reading, your brain will comprehend and remember much better. Don't just read left to right, first page to last page,
    read and imagine while reading. It's the only trick that has been working for me.
    It make take a little more time, but you won't have to re-read everything over and over again

      Your capital letter K places a greater emphasis on what is already in your head. By balancing all three, your curiosity might discover a surprising fact or two...or open one's mind to a life altering insight. The K (knowledge) in a larger context may prove even more useful and rewarding for yourself and others.

    • @ulrichrafa3012
      @ulrichrafa3012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It depends a lot on the way you are reading. I struggled with that same problem you have. Thanks to a french youtuber, what helped me was instead of reading words by words which we are often made to learn in primary school .. you should skip the first 2 or 3 words and set your vision a bit further at line you are reading. don't worry about the first 2 or 3 words your peripheral vision will enable you to see them even if you don't focus on them. In fact your peripheral vision is crucial for reading, since it requiere a lot less effort to read instead of word by word which requiere a lot of focus and in which you may find yourself go back at the begining of a paragraph to try and understand. Also try to read faster because going slow will make it hard to grasp the meaning of any long sentence or paragraph in general. (because reading slow will make it hard to make a connection between words // therefore your brain will have a hard time to connect anything meaningful, in other words you won't get the whole picture of it. also it stress your brain)
      So to resume : skip first 2 or 3 words, and if the sentence is long you can do the same near the end of sentence skip 2 or 3 words too. Train yourself to do that while reading faster and you will easily understand what you are reading. With KWL method it should be even more easier, at least that worked for me. I have no problem finishing books now even shakespeare twelfth night or midsummer night's dream.
      :)

    Entertaining lesson what lovely charming young lady. I will make note of this technique, "what I know"," what I wish to know", and "have learned". I had solicitors letter nothing drastic, but have not a clue what most of it is saying. I was looking for methodology when I came here, trying to understand the jargon in the letter to better understand its contents. I would have rather throw in my lot with Albert Einstein. Although Emma speaks clearly, she is very thoughtful writing out transcript for us as well as putting subtitles.
