  • Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the insane weaponry of the Counter-Strike franchise, including the iconic AK47 automatic rifle, the FNP90 submachine gun, and the many versions of the AR-15/M4 rifle.
In the latest video in the Firearm Expert Reacts series, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of the Counter-Strike franchise, and compares them to their real-life counterparts.

6:15 The scenario you described did happen in Vietnam with a compromised US sniper who had the bad luck of running straight into a squad of enemy fighters. He was carrying an M1911 and a revolver (I don’t remember the caliber). He immediately drew both weapons and got to business. Would be weird firing 2 very different handguns in a situation like that.

The version used in Global Offensive is the more modern version with Magpul style iron sights and a Picatinny rail attached to the top. This variant of the P90 was first seen in Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare.

Until he mentioned it I never thought about the reason for the speed change when you take the knife out was because of a weight change I always just figured that it would be more so along the lines of it being more clunky while holding a rifle/LMG/SMG due to it restricting your arm movement which would reduce your ability to run normally because as much as we don't really think about it how you move your arms does greatly affect your speed while running. Try running with your arms crossed and just see how much more awkward it feels. That being said I do think that it is really all just in the name of game mechanics because realistically there is no way you run the same speed with a AUG as a MP7 IRL.

Left 4 Dead 2 has burst fire SCAR (as far as i know SCAR has no burst fire variant) and weapons that sounds unpleasant, seriously the AK sounds were unpleasant, instead of sounding like actual guns or common action movie and game guns.

Also I guess a little addition, I'm really sorry if it was mentioned in the video and I just forgot but for anyone curious
The AWP as presented in the CS series is never actually, well, an AWP (Arctic Warfare Police). If I recall correctly the 1.6/source version is the AWM (Arctic Warfare Magnum) and the one presented in CSGO is an original AW even though from a coding and design point of view, it's a combination of different AW series guns, which to explain
The AWP in CSGO has the following features:
It's coded to use 338. LM (Lupua Magnum) which the AWM uses
The ammo is modeled, let's say right, I'd have to double check but it's either 7.62 x 51 NATO, .308 Winchester or .243 Winchester.
The action is, a bit too short on the in-game model but in all fairness, the AWP and AW both have shorter actions than the AWM, the in-game model just over does it
And the thing that makes it the most difficult is the colour, as the AWP is distinctly black as opposed to green which is where the assumption that it was modeled after the AW comes from
It may not be perfect but we ought to respect the devs and modeling team for trying.

Also, to get super technical, one doesn't have to wrench the mag out but certainly does need to hit the magazine release with either the trigger finger or the hand removing the mag. Oh and the dust cover stays open once a round is ejected; it doesn't close after every round.

Some of use cant fire right hand for manu reason (eye, left hand is more handy than right one, ect...). Last I heard Minh works in Seattle for Valve and still has family in Vancouver and I still have him on Facebook so I should really get the Mp5 signed at some point lol. I was 16 when I met him when he was 25 or so, playing at Panther paintball in the airsoft club called OpFor and BCAC. Hope he's doing well, he's a good guy.
Minh did all the coding, it was his baby that he worked on while going to college at SFU. His game. Cliffe is the guy who made the sprites and animations, and many of the maps. I beta tested Minh's second game, Tactical Intervention but on the original HL engine, then when the game released it was released on Source. It's not a very good game, but I think you can still get it on Steam. Dang, I dont see it. Oh well, youre not missing much.

It's kind of mad how many games actually get the AR-15 pattern rifles reload animations so, very, very wrong. They're hardly a rare weapon and I imagine a lot of the developers making these games will even have one at home or know someone who does if they live in the US lol.

I absolutely love the fact that he pulls out the real gun representation after almost every weapon in this video. I would love it if you guys did this for the rest of your videos as well. Seeing you hold the real life representation of the firearm in the game really makes the video better in my opinion.

9:35 The current version of the P90 and PS90 being sold has a rail just like shown, that you can add iron sights to. The reason of course is it's a cost reduction over the old ring sight (even though the gun is still being sold at the same price, more profit for FN).

As a fellow cs beta player who saw another video with you in it before this; you having played it blew my mind. Rock on man. Yeah the left handed thing is super strange! There is an option to switch to right handed weapons in some of the counter-strike games but I don’t think all the swaps make sense. Iirc there’s even weapons that flood spent hot rounds towards you.

The story behind the arctic warfare magnum is fascinating. they literally made the gun in a shed for a proffesional athlete and then the army one day needed some sniper rifles and these guys sent in their gun and they won the bid. but then the army super visers wanted to check out their facilities but they didnt have any because the gun was literally made in a shed, so they had to borrow someone elses major facility to show the military supervisers before getting the final ok for mass production. and sadly there was some issues with the gun when it was being mass produced but i think they ended up fixing them

A little note on the AWP:
The one used in the game is actually the AWSM (heh mind the name), the Super Magnum, chambered in .338 Lapua as Jonathan mentioned. The name is only used on CS versions that uses the real name of the weapons rather than the fictional ones.
