    It is so nice to find an honest VW mechanic that tells the issues as well as the good. I watch your channel all the time. I drive a Mk1 Skoda Octavia with the ASZ PD 130 VW group Diesel engine. You've given me a confidence in VW group cars here in England. No matter what the issues may be. Keep the videos coming I'm learning to maintain my own car as well. Thanks for the confidence.

    I just bought an 07 GTI (in Toronto) and I'm currently considering myself VERY lucky to not have any of those issues. I did ALL fluids and filters and will be doing the cam follower shortly, but apart from serviceable items, it seems I got super lucky. Definitely looking forward to all the upcoming vids.

    Love seeing that it's the same in states as back here in Germany, I'm working as a mechanic for a vw dealership, and my boss has told me a hundred times already that if I become an engineer (that's the current plan) and I design stuff the same way they do now, he'll come visit me in Wolfsburg and strangle me personally 😂😂😂

    When I bought my 08 mk5 I put a catless down pipe and it was a simple install. A few years later I moved states and they required me to have a cat. I bought one from IE in SLC. Went to a shop to have it installed and they actually used a mini-ductor to get the nuts off without breaking the stud. I was very happy it worked out. I’m sure by now (5 years later) you have already bought that lol.
    I been watching a lot of your videos and you have some quality videos! Keep up the great work!

    I live in Michigan where rust just grows on stuff immediately. I can't wait til I need to start working on my mark 6 Jetta. I think I hear the driver front control arm going bad so that should be fun. I've been working in shops for years up here. But dealing with rust in a shop setting is alot easier than doing it in your driveway

    This video was fantastic. I don't understand why anyone would down-vote this video. I had an ongoing project/daily-driven '97 MK3 VR6 and I'm looking at some MK5/MK6 2.0Ts. Definitely feeling inspired by this video. My only comment would be in regard to removing the tie rod end with the ball joint tool...why not just use a hammer and whack the spindle where the tie-rod end goes through it? That's how I did it on every single front wheel drive car I've ever worked on and I worked in dealerships as a technician for years. Just don't smack the dust shield behind the rotor (if you do, you can simply bend it back in place), but it's faster and doesn't require any special tool. The spindle can definitely take the blow from the hammer.

The repair list so far. 2 new front wheel bearings, new HPFP, New HPFP bolts (i snapped one), new thrust sensor, new cam follower, New O2 sensors, New Radiator, new tires, new master cylinder, new clutch bleeder valve (i broke the old one), New brake vacuum pump O rings , and New slave cylinder. Yes i has been work however i love the MK5. Its tune as well, with other supporting mods 😁.

  • @TinaTheBootyLover

    I have an 08' Rabbit 2.5L manual and the problems I've found most persistent are the cruise control switch failing after about 4-6 months of replacing the entire left stalk, and a mystery oil leak. I thought it was the vacuum seal but nope. Then I did the valve cover seal and it still leaks a bit from somewhere. Since I tend to do really long road trips the cruise control thing is super annoying since it involves disabling the airbag system and trying not to screw up the coil spring in the steering. Other than that I haven't had many more of the classic issues except the headliner and the connector under the seat disabling the airbag system.

  • @EclipseDante

    Hey! I've been watching your videos for the last several years and want to say that I really enjoy your content and you actually made me start working on my own car! There's a little question that I have about central locking. It's probably really easy, but the dealer wants 75€ just to diagnose the problem...
    On a 2007 (9N3) Volkswagen Polo, when you press the close or open button on the key fob, the door wont open or close, but mechanically you can open the door by pulling the handle and you can also close it by pressing on the pin.
    (EDIT: it's a 4 door and only the rear driver's door won't open using the key fob. All the others work using the key fob.)
    I hope I'm not bothering you with this, but I'd really want to know your opinion!
    Thanks for all the great content!

    @ccosmin7791 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those problems are not only on the mk5 but on the mk6 as well.My car is a 2.0 tdi with stage 1 engine tune and dpf off . I live in eastern Europe so the winters are really harsh and there is a lot of salt and dirt all around.. Had to cut the excentric bolts too because they were so rusty and changing the excentrics was a hassle because they soldered onto the outer metal frame. Also the rear springs broke on the bottom side due to them sitting in water all the time i think. The rear shock absorbers top car mount needs rethreading because the bolts don't go all the way in ( fixed it with a spacer for now... and seems to be holding well). In the front engine bay i almost broke the air filter housing due to the bolts loosing their head shape, and from a Torx it went to a circle... lots of fun getting that out in a tight space.The biggest concern in the front is that the engine mount under the battery kept breaking and after 3 new mounts i got a poly bush. It seems to be doing it's job fine but there is some vibration going on even after 3 months of daily use . Oh also my rear hatch washer hose broke , and vw charged me something like 300$ for a fix... just went to the local hardware store, got some green garden hose and it has been working flawlessly for 4 years.

    Speaking of the engine cover/airbox, in my case (I have an AXX engine), shortly after buying it, I took the cover off, to inspect it, and the filter, and to take a look under the oil cap, cause that throat piece was missing (still is) and the cap doesn't sit flush with the cover, and I found out a couple things about this design:
    1. It sits really tight on those posts and rubber gromets, and if you're not careful, you can very easily crack the filter case. In fact, mine was indeed cracked, although it wasn't at the air filter itself, and was missing a couple indentations for the gromets, and later I realised someone actually went and shaved the heads on all the mounting posts, so that the gromets won't hang into them anymore, most likely for that very reason. And
    2. At least on my car, the top and bottom sides of the airbox were bent away from each other, most likely because of the higher temperatures in that area, despite the 2 heat shields above the exhaust manifold, possibly combined with the K&N filters not being made exactly after the factory dimensions. I feared I might be getting unfiltered air into the engine, and thought rather than buying another engine cover and risk it warping like the old one, I'm going to go the extra mile (there were in fact, several extra miles involved) and get a cold air intake. Now, at the time, I didn't have a lot of money, and I just got what was most affordable. Besides not having the TÜV certification, or what's called an ABE, it was also designed for right hand drive GTIs, so I ended up cutting a piece of the heat shield, that was coming in contact with the brake fluid reservoir. Lesson learned. And now, every 2 years, when I take my car to be inspected, I just swap back to the engine cover. Hopefully, in time, I'll get a proper one. But I just went on a tangent there.

    Rust, hah you should see my mk1 tt from 99 it must be the rustiest tt I’ve ever seen, however 6 months of cutting, grinding, sanding and 2 new wings it’s starting to look good. Those damn stupid rear calliper bracket bolts though had me stuck...., until thankfully I realised the disc etc can come off without removing it. Don’t know about the golf but in the tt the clearance needed for the abs sensor seems only to be achieved via that stupid tight torque for the wheel bearing, anyway - Great videos humble mechanic.

    I've owned a mkv gti for almost 7 yrs, 75k miles, 127k on clock now. Up until a year and half ago, most realible car I've ever owned. Since then....refreshed the entire suspension. Living in Ohio I know the pain you faced. Thought I could have the job done in 2 days. That could have been true if almost every bolt didn't need to be cut out. Your video nailed the exact ones I had an issue with.
    Shortly after the suspension was finished, started having limp mode and fuel cuts. Turned out to be wiring harness for the throttle body and trust sensor. The trust sensor, like you said, is an easy fix. Fixed the vacuum pump o ring, slight oil leak. I was hearing a slight exhaust leak coming from the dp. After pulling off, almost cracked in half at the flex. Also a pretty straight forward/ easy job.
    I've never had an issue with door handles. That being said, I've owned other/ older vw and used to sticky latches. I just spray all handles down once a year with some wd40.
    Car drives fantastic, but I do have a very slow leak from the radiator, coming from the plastic, an oil leak from the oil filter housing, and a fan that I believe is on the way out. On the list before winter and hopefully the last repairs for a while.
    Overall the cars been great and I love it as my dd. My only regret.....I haven't replaced that damn engine cover yet. I did have a vw mechanic friend show me a trick a few years back that helps out a lot, but it's still absurd. Use a pry bar to remove and spray the rubber grommets with wd40 when reinstalling.
    Thanks for the video, thought it was spot on

    As someone who has had a Polo 1n, 2 mk5 Golf's, mk3 Jetta, Touran 1T2 and Audi a3 8p.... I can tell you to always expect rusty bolts and simple jobs to take 3 times as long as they should.

    My MK5 has;
    1. Rust
    2. Driver side lock failed and the passenger one is also failing so now I need 2 new locks
    I have a 1.6 FSI with the same style cover. It is a NIGHTMARE to get off because it is so tight and it broke my back trying to pop it out. :/

    Hello I have a question. My brother has a mk5 with a clutch pedal issue. The pedal once in a while gets stuck we bleed the system, changed the master cylinder. We are considering maybe the slave cylinder but before we go down that route I would like to hear from anyone if theres another common issue that might be causing this.

    any harm to the turbo when doing a catless downpipe and full exhaust without a tune? I am not talking CEL but mechanically from the massively increased flow such as possible overspooling and burning out the tiny factory turbo? thank you

      With the right extension/wobble you can. Just a tight space to work

      Thanks for the response. I was curious if there was a reason beyond "tight spot" because I'll be doing some suspension work to my Mk6 and I thought I'd install a new pair of rotors out back while I had the car up.
