I just found your channel, and I must say, this is all impressively professional and generally well done. I'm not even in the market for an SLR, let alone a high end one like this, but being an (ex) camera/photography nerd, this stuff is super cool to watch. Especially since you clearly have a great deal of knowledge in what you talk about. Peace!

I own a GH4 but I think I will be selling it ASAP. My cat and family vacation videos simply can not tolerate Panasonic's lackluster sensor size, and the focusing speed really irritates me when I miss the critical moments that ruin my holidays. I shoot in 4K and grade in Resolve. My little cousin from up north really appreciates the grading that I do and our family is much more happy now. Also, the cats look just awesome, you can almost touch them.

Thanks for this, we appreciate all the work that goes into these videos.
I wish canon made a sensor that rocked that much (on paper).

Regarding the no touch screen back, the way around it for me and my A6000 is to use the playmemories app on my Tablet. You get to use touch screen for focus and have the added bonus of reviewing your photos and video on a larger screen.

Just found your channel and think it is one of the most professionally done photography channels on TH-cam. I'll definitely be linking from you when buying equipment in the future (probably the camera in this video). I've been wanting a full frame DSLR that shoots in 4K and has on sensor phase detection. I'm amazed that over 2 years after releasing the 70D, Canon still doesn't have a full frame camera with phase detection. I'm not a pro, but I enjoy sharp, fast primes, and would like to be able to shoot good videos without having to lug around another piece of kit. Anyways, keep up the good work!

I've watched this video 3 times. I just can't wait. I still don't care how well the AF is for video though. Even on a run and gun video I manual focus. I'm very fast and used to it though. But I do care about it when it comes to photography.

After watching your “Canon vs Nikon” video, I’m very interested to see how the Sony a7R II competes against Canon and Nikon for portrait photography. I’m looking forward to hearing your opinion on which is the best portrait lens for this camera and also, see if the Canon 70mm-200mm f2.8 with ef to e-mount adapter is a worthy alternative.

So I'm very interested in the new stacked sensor design. I'm currently a A7ii owner, I think that camera is great but the AF while better than the original A7 still isn't good. The AF points appear to cover a much larger area than the A7ii, which worked for tracking but only within that small APS-C area.
If the backlite sensor work as good or better at the same ISO as the a7ii I will consider upgrading.

It cannot be overstated just how revolutionary and important this camera is. You nailed it Tony. I've been talking to Sony, Nikon and Canon peeps since the announcement and the latter two are at a loss for words. It's pretty undeniable that Sony is the clear and undisputed leader. Not just in mirrorless, but in cameras. Huge statement. It's getting awfully hard to say otherwise with a straight face. Where's the Nikon and Canon innovation I ask? (crickets)

Also as a carry-around camera its going to be great for all the reasons you already mentioned. But a thing I have come to love on my soon to be extinct Canon 6D is extending ISO down to 50 on Sunny days with a fast prime, and getting equivalent exposure of double the max shutter 1/8000 --> 1/16000sec

Tony - as usual great review - thank you!
I heard about A7R II yesterday and I myself, a complete canon user, started to get very interested. I am scheduled to pick up my 5DSR as I'm 1st in line at my shop in Toronto on the 15th, but this camera has actually made me think that this could be the one.
Should I take delivery of the 5DSR or is this the 1?
    Just shot a beach wedding on Saturday on Lake Erie wearing 3 cameras - 5D3 with 24-70, 5D3 with 35L and 7D2 with 70-200 2.8 IS L.
    I want a high mega-pixel camera.

Love your reviews Tony, thanks for this one. You work fast! I was a hair's breath away from buying both the A7R, and the A7S. But I couldn't quite pull myself away from my GH4 because it's so smooth and the lenses are diverse and affordable. This camera, however, may tempt me beyond what I can bear... the 42 megapixel aerial landscape shots would be MIND-BLOWING! The HUGE price increase, however, may again keep me from pulling the trigger. I'm always just THIS CLOSE to sticking a foot into the Sony pond. With the GH5 around the corner.... hmmm.

Can't wait to see your review when the camera comes out. But I honestly disagree with the lack of touchscreen as a disadvantage. Is there any way to adjust the exposure while the (back button) focus is pressed? I can't seem to find a way to scroll the shutter wheel or anything while in focus. This is helpful in continuous focus for moving subjects changing from a dark scene to a bright one or vice versa. Apparently you can't do this with the a7rii and you can only dial your exposure without focusing. I hope I'm wrong.

WoW Tony you jumped on this one fast, and I am excited and let down all at the same time, I love everything about this camera, but the lack of touch screen is breaking my heart, why why why is Sony not giving us what we want, I just don't get it, it's not like they need to invent a touch screen, my Xperia phone has it, when I first saw this camera announced, I was giddy with excitement thinking that the A7r ll is my next camera, I finally get to move up in mp from my 5Dlll, and get my first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with IBIS and internal 4k, yippy, and then when I realized they didn't ad the touch screen, I was bummed, and now i'm not sure about buying it, it really sucks, the camera has so much going for it, but hasn't moved into the future with a touch screen, common Sony, what is wrong with you guys, good video Tony, look forward to some of your tests of the A7r ll, and I hope you include adapting Canon glass, also I have to ad, lookout Canon, your 5DSr is already looking old and heavy with less features, and it's not even out yet, and probably doesn't have the dynamic range or ISo performance of this new A7r ll, but i'm sure Tony will let us all no how they compare, now i need to decide if i'm going to spend $3200 dollars on a new camera without a touch screen ??????????????????????? the big question of the day

When you talk about pixel binning in 4k (super 35mm) between the a7rii and a7s. You forget that the a7rii sensor uses backside illumination. Even though the a7rii will be using less sensor area, that sensor area should be a stop brighter and cancel out the a7s advantage.

  • @ldt336
    @ldt336 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Tony, What are your thoughts on the a7 system now that the amazing looking a7RII is on its way? It looks like there is a good selection quality primes at 25, 35, 55, and 85mm, but what about the zoom lenses? The 16-35mm f4 looks good although slow, but the 24-70mm f4 and 70-200 f4 look pretty mediocre and there are no f2.8 zoom lenses. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Hey Tony Northrup I've had a question about AA filters since I first heard about them from you, and because you talked about them here maybe now is an ok time to ask. Thanks in part to your videos I made the choice to purchase the 7DM2 for my expedition to Antarctica a few months ago, and I love it!
My question is, is it worthwhile to remove the AA filter?
I understand that the automatic sensor cleaning would no longer work, I'm willing to lose that feature if removing the AA filter has a chance of producing generally sharper images and increasing low-light performance. Of course I'm not expecting significant changes in photo results, but I do enjoy optimizing the gear I own. (I am using the Sigma 18-35 at your recommendation and like it very much, also)
I'm able to assemble and disassemble electronics, I'm confident I can remove the filter myself, I'm looking for things I might not have considered before I do this.
    Thanks in advance!
(PS camera and gear modifications might make an interesting live show topic)

Nice review. Any idea what the video output is? 10bit 422 would be amazing, but I'm highly doubt we'd be so lucky. Don't think Sony has released this info though. Thanks!

Thanks Tony, CanonRumours suggest that there may be some linkage between the sensor used within the new Sony and Canon. Apparently the backlit sensor relates to a Canon patent. They suggest that a similar sensor will be used in the 5D Mark IV. Just wondered whether you had any thoughts on this? Thanks again :-)

    Tony,
Stellar review, as usual. You analyze what the specs will mean to the challenges of the filmmaker, which most don't do.
Fold-out Screen - You're correct about the screen; it should have been articulated and touch focus (for filmmakers). The 70D is awesome in this category. The Sony engineers have never tried to film an interview in a small pickup truck where you don't have room to get your head behind the camera or when you want to get a shot on a monopod extended 8 feet up, or a "doggie cam" shot with the camera grazing the floor. The fold-out screen really solves so many problems. Maybe you should take the Sony engineers out on a shoot in the real world? That would be great.
Resolution Question - I've been fascinated by the extraordinary 14-bit RAW video that the 5DM3 can produce using the Magic Lantern firmware upgrade. (Since I rarely see side by side comparisons, I'm including links to side by side comparisons of Canon's 5DM3 outputting h.264 versus ML RAW video in bright scenes - vimeo.com/74455311 & in dark scenes - vimeo.com/77717260 )
So, I'm ready to throw down for the DSLR that will approximate the 14-bit RAW picture Magic Lantern can do out of my Canon 5D M3. Do the Sony specs state if the a7r II writes in h.264 in 2k and/or 4k? Do you think the Sony 100Mbps you mentioned will come close to 14 bit?
Thanks for all you do. I encourage half of the 110,000+ viewers of this video to buy something through your link to B&H. You've earned it.....over and over.

***** It won't, they have dropped the ball. You can use Canon glass on this. Look at the 5DSR, it has 50 MP, only a few more than the A7rii, YET, only has the dynamic range of the 7D, no IBIS, no focus peaking, not a good idea for video at all. Canon had the chance, they wouldn't do it. They refused to pay attention to video.

I didn't say the 5D wasn't a good camera. I am speaking of advancing with cameras. The AA filter isn't the issue. I used to think that too. It has more to do with how the sensor down samples the pixels. So for example, the new A7Rii has no AA filter, yet it has no alias and moire in Super 35mm mode. I shot with the 5D mark ii and then mark iii for years. They served me well. However, the video on my A7R is much sharper. So the A7Rii will be amazing. There isn't much issue with aliasing in photography at all and it can be fixed if there ever is. It does show up in video but not like people make it seem. I don't think I'd ever buy a camera with a AA filter on it again. It's just so razor sharp without it. Even with video. I took some landscape video with my A7R in the same location I took a landscape video with the 5D Mark iii. I can upload both if you want to see them. The 5D is smushed up. You don't notice it when you just have the 5D but when you see the A7R beside it, it's like wow that's sharp. The numbers are proclaiming they are declining. DSLR sales are going down and Sony's sales has raised at a faster rate than anyone thought. Almost everyone I know who shoots video sold their 5D for the A7S. I feel like I never got to know how sharp my L lenses were on my 5D. Because now that I know what a camera with more megapixels and no AA filter looks like, when I zoom in 1:1 on my Zeiss lenses it's razor sharp. I'm sure the Canon L series glass is probably just as sharp, it's just that no one can see it.
Plus I wasn't talking about you spending money on camera bodies. It seems like you said you are no fan boy, but you took it personal that Sony is running this race hard and Canon has done nothing for years. You somehow made it about you.

    • @smaakjeks
      @smaakjeks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't take it personally at all. I'm glad that Sony are making real progress. I think it's awesome. I hope many people have a great time taking amazing pictures and video with Sony gear. This is only about me in the sense that I'm personally looking forward to future gear, and I hope Canon (or gear that uses a canon mount) will make fun improvements in the future. That's what my opening comment is about. I don't think that qualifies as being a fanboy of Canon. Since I have gear invested in Canon, that means I'll probably stick with Canon for a while. If I could afford it, I would buy different bodies and optics for different uses, since each of them have strengths and weaknesses. Since I'm not a millionaire I have to work around my limitations.
Experts in technology cannot predict even 5 years into the future, so you'll forgive me if I have a hard time taking your predictions seriously.

My only concern is the single card slot. I would love to shoot on a backup card, just in case. Also, the battery life on this camera will be probably short. Other than that, I CAN'T WAIT to see real world reviews. Canon - please surprise us with a great 5DMkIII replacement A.S.A.P.

sony has been at it from their alpha series and are going up by leaps and bounds and surprising us all. GREAT WORK Sony, who would have thought 5 FF mirror less, its like sony is saying, hmm, I can make it even better and they do it! 42MP is good and I love detail in a picture, its a dream for landscape photographers and journalists, you name it. Low light performance, we will have to see, generally, more MP, the more the noise you will get with low light photography. I wish they had extended the batty life :-(

Does anyone yet know if Sony will continue to use lossy compression on their raw files with the new A7RII, as they have on all the previous A7 cameras? I've seen multiple examples of posterization artifacts near highlights in A7R images as a result of the lossy raw compression. My hope is that Sony at least include an option for lossless raw output.

I can't find info on this camera containing a GPS (and/or Glonass) receiver.
I would love for it to have either built-in, or in case it doesn't, for it to be able to interface to a dedicated GPS/Glonass receiver.
The reason is I would like to live upload pictures taken (Jpeg) with the GPS data incorporated into the EXIF, which takes away the option for post-processing.
Using e.g. an EyeFi card could do this based on WiFi positioning but more often than not, results are not very good and it requires the pictures to be taken in environment with plenty of WiFi routers with known locations to triangulate the position, something that could be a hassle from the very moment you leave urban environment.
Also tethering the GPS from a smartphone is undesireable as it would cause battery drain on the smartphone as well as mediocre results.
I'm curious as to what Sony comes up with on this field, given this camera doesn't come exactly cheap, one would expect a decent solution to this challenge, one way or another..

Cool vid Tony! I'll respond to your other response later. I love the concept of the mirrorless camera and I have done alot of different type of photos over the years and I want to do some portraits as part of a home studio. Sony is a wild group! Why 44 and not 50? Everyone knows that bigger is obviously better! right! I mean if we exclude technique and experience and all of the other tech benefits of the mirrorless. I just thought about it.... I don't think the Canon's have an articulating screen either. Hmmm.... I am going to have to continue my research. It would be nice to use one camera for video and photography. By the way, I own a Sony Z5U and I love it and it has.... wait for it... wait for it.... An articulating screen!!! I do solo shooting and now I can't imaging shooting video without it. I wonder if there was some type of small external monitor attachment that could fix that particular problem.Yep.. more research.... Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Nelson Poetra Yoga Hadisoeseno The Sony site talks about a change in angle of view "The angle of view will be narrower down to that of APS-C size" with even their own A mount lens. This is expected with APS-C but full frame? Could someone explain?

Glenn Hogan hm, I don't think it would change the angle of view if the lens itself is made for Full Frame. My friend got a7m2 and use LAEA3 adapter for his full frame A mount lens and the field of view is as how it should be.

You mentioned tethering in the video. Just curious here, are any of the brands tethering over wifi yet? I imagine they could write an app to do it if they haven't already. Any word on flash sync speed when using efcs or silent shutter modes? I'm hoping for unlimited flash sync like a leaf shutter. I noticed on DP review in the specs that there is some sort of high speed sync option but no details.
