    You're an increasingly smart guy, Tony. You take a technical and even scientific approach when you look at a camera, but still keep practicality in mind. I mean you were able to do a better review of this camera than most will probably do hands on. Thanks for the awesome videos!

    Of course they announced the A7SII, literally the day after my A7RII showed up. I think I made the right call as I like the idea of having a more "all around" camera where I can get great stills if need be as well as good 4k video. I picked up an Assassin just for the touchscreen and other features because having worked with the A7S/Shogun combo, I knew that was the right call.

    Hi Tony,
    I've been considering to move from my canon to Sony A7S\R II for a while
    ?in case I will use my crop lenses, can I still get the sensor to work on super35 and to be able to shift to APS-C
    also do you have any idea if the AF will still be useable for stills on both cameras?
    thanks a lot !

    @Tony Northrup doesn't Sony include since A7Rll the clamp for the micro hdmi so it won't pull out?
    And about the form factor, is an advantage if you use the camera in a gimball like the letus helix or movi.

    @GregAllen2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video Tony! I always enjoy your work... I've been waiting for the 7S II for a while now. I am still shooting with a GH3 on a rig and I must say the form factor is not ideal. At this point I am very much considering a dedicated camcorder such as the new Panasonic AG-DVX200, or the JVC GY-LS300. The JVC has the ability to use most lenses on the market with its 4/3 mount and Variable Scan Mapping technology. The Panasonic uses a 4/3 sensor and fixed lens but is an all in one grab and go set up. Considering the price for the camcorders VS price for the Sony and the additional gear needed to operate an SLR style camera (rig, xlr adapter etc etc) I am not sure for a one man band such myself it's worth it. Of coarse this all depends on what a person is looking for. I am just thinking out loud here. Maybe people don't realize the amount of additional gear and extra time involved in using a SLR to shoot good quality video.
    Cheers,
    Greg

    Thanks for the intro to the camera and the review. The original A7S is now discounted to being just a couple of hundred pounds more than a GH4 in some UK retailers. Since I cannot easily distribute or edit 4K at the moment - would you recommend a cheaper, original A7S shooting HD for now and, perhaps, adding an external recorder when 4K really takes a hold in a year or two and I can make more use of it?

  • @lonnieatk9120
    @lonnieatk9120 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with you on the need for F2.8 zoom lenses. For a hobbyist like me in my late 40's that would be a definite buy. the 55mm and 35mm I absolutely love but I just can't justify an f4 28-70 and f4 70-200. I really think they are missing out on sales of cameras without the 2.8 zooms. The lack of them almost has me wanting to sell off my Sony and go with Nikon or Canon instead. I want native lenses! The only thing I adapt are my takumars for the fun of using them. May I also add, I truly enjoy the format you and Chelsea provide. It's "inviting" for back of a better term and not pro a specific manufacturer, your honest opinions are appreciated. Keep up the good work!

    wow, i feel like this is actually quite a big step up from the a7s, even while considering the $500 mark up. do we know if it can send 4k out micro HDMI while recording 1080p at 120 internally? or any other internal record while sending out 4k, for that matter?

    about the micro HDMI, Sony did give us a little accessory to hold cables in place without the need of a cage with the A7RII, so there's a good chance they will give us the same accessory with the A7SII at least.

    It would be very interesting if you could get the Black Magic URSA Mini 4.6K version and compare it against A7S / A7S II. Very different beasts, with the URSA sporting global shutter and 10bit with great HD downscale option, and A7S sporting crazy low light and crazy low light.

    Tony, Is there a video cam you can suggest that will take high resolution videos of the night sky for the purpose I have already described? In other words, what would be my other alternative if I chose I video cam instead of the a7s II with a night super sensitive chip?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Mondio I think your best bet will probably be an a7S (with an Assassin) or a7S II. If you have the budget, the Canon ME-20F-SH will probaby beat it... but we haven't tested it yet.

    Why no mention about the reported (and significant) overheating issues with 4K recording in the a7r2 and, since the a7s2 shares almost ever significant design detail (body, ibis, processor, etc, but not sensor), why you think/don't think the a7s2 will share that problem.
    Especially since Sony said they didn't do 4K internal in the a7s1 because of overheating problems. And because it appears as though they might be using the same sensor in the a7s2 as the a7s. Or do you think that the low megapixels of the a7s2 sensor will keep it cooler... even though at 4K the data is the same?
    This overheating basically eliminates the entire Sony 4K capable a7 series from my consideration because I record events and can't use a camera that has to have a cool down period after 15 to 40 minutes of nonstop recording. Any feedback appreciated!

    I am loving the video capabilities of that camera! Makes me want it for that alone. 3k dollars, though...
    Btw, you always manage to give your videos those nice touches that sets you apart from the rest. The production value (as I've mentioned in other comments), and fun little details like at 1:41 (line from record button to the word "Awful"). Stuff like that really makes a difference :-)

    How would you compare A7sii and A7s to blackmagic pocket cinema camera obviously for video only as bpcc is video only.The blackmagic can also be paired with the ninja assassin and I think they give you some color grading software with it.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brendan Daly The BMPCC has true raw video, so it can theoretically be cleaner when it's graded... The BMPCC also has better usability. But the a7 series is full-frame, which gathers more than 4x more light, so it'll be cleaner in low light. Plus, you get to take full advantage of all the full-frame lenses and their background blur.

    Tony, I wish I didn't come across your wonderfully put together A7s II review, because now I want to buy it! The stabilization, touch screen, 120 fps and S-Log3 all made me rethink getting the original a7s. My main purpose is to video shoot the stars/meteors/satellites at night. Along with this new A7S II, I want to get the F 1.4 35mm lens and use the android app for remote control. Do you know who would offer this combo for me, and what accessories do I need to buy in order to make my purchase a total package astronomical dream come true?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Mondio Sorry, I don't know enough about what you're doing... Astrophotography is very specialized, and I'm not sure why you'd be shooting video (as opposed to a time lapse). Have you checked out the D810A? You'll also want to research the coma of various lenses.

    Some good improvements here, but I hope that it does not overheat after 15-20 minutes ( like the A7R II ) and this becomes the Achilles heel of this camera. Will have to wait for the reviews to start coming in once the camera is available.

    • @UCreations
      @UCreations 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bryan Coronel
      The 18-50 f/2.8 is replaced by the better Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC is sharper, but it's autofocus motor is slow and noisy and it doesn't have stabilisation . The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC does have stabilisation, but isn't as sharp as the older version or the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS.
      The 17-70 f/2.8-4 performs nice, but isn't f/2.8 through the range, so at 50mm it is a stop slower (and has more DoF) than the constant f/2.8 zooms.

    +Tony Northrup, I really thought this was going to be the model where Sony finally adds a touchscreen and/or fully articulated screen :-\ Have you decided yet what will be your default 4K recording option for all your work? You have so many choices now, perhaps it'll be a combination.

      +Dennis Kapatos If we keep the a7S II around, I'm sure that'll be our main camera. But the a7R II's internal recording has been great; we have yet to shoot in low enough light for it to be a problem.

    Hey Tony, thank you for this very informative video. Are you 100% sure the a7s II won't have the Super-35 option ? Because the a7s has it. If so, I'll be really happy I got the a7r II ! Having this new option when filming with my 11-24 is such a great advantage.. it gives me a 16-35 (ish) when I need it.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Francis Hehle I'm 100% sure it won't have a 4k Super-35 option because it doesn't have enough pixels. It would only have 3.5 megapixels with a 1.5X crop, and it needs 8 megapixels for 4k video.
      And yeah, I like the Super-35 option, too.

    • @fhehle
      @fhehle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tony Northrup Makes total sense. The only thing : The old A7s also has that 12.2MP sensor, but still does Super-35. That's the part I don't understand.

      +Francis Hehle It doesn't do Super-35 for 4k video.

      +Tony Northrup Oh, I didn't know that ! Then I'm really happy I got the a7r II. When I saw the a7s II announced right after we bought two a7rII, I was a little upset (because we only do video). But for us the Super-35 option is a better advantage than the low light performance of the a7s II. Thank you for the info :)

    I'm not certain this is true but from my experience with the color profiles that flatten the image they give a much much better dynamic range (using Alvaroyus on my D610 brings me from about 13 to 14.5 stops), but doesn't it show a lot more noise in any low light. I did a little bit of testing myself even at 400 ISO I was getting much more noise than using the normal flat profile (but there was as previously stated, much more dynamic range). Is S-Log 3 that way? It does an awesome job for what it's for, but wouldn't it cause a lot of noise?

    • @randomgeocacher
      @randomgeocacher 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Log curves are flat around normal exposure (lots of color data there) and then even more flat around the extremes. So if you in post decide to keep a lot of the extremes, they probably will have some issues. How noisy your image will be depends a lot on if you exposed correctly and what choices you do in post, so there is no yes/no answer. Crushing the blacks is a common way to kill noise in shadow areas. For the record I haven't been grading neither Nikon nor Sony footage, so just speaking for my own experience with BMPCC & Canon.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ArrKayCee Yeah, recovered shadows are noisy on the a7S with S-Log. We only use it when we need the extra dynamic range, and then we have to very carefully adjust the exposure to maximize what we squeeze from the histogram--it'll usually underexpose by default.

    4K with 60fps would definitely generate heating problems in such a small device with such a huge sensor. Thats the reason why it was not implemented I am pretty sure. Tech moves on and at some day it will be possible, but not today. It is already a big achievement to do 4K internally with huge sensor in small device and 120fps now with FullHD.

    Greetings Tony Sir,
    Nice video and good information, I was looking to upgrade camera for wedding and fashion photography was thinking for nikon D810, here in India we have long hour wedding functions and in summer weather extremely hot how is the battery life of A7RII which one would you suggest Nikon D810 or new Sony A7RII ?

      +Simranpalsingh Kohli I definitely would prefer to shoot a wedding with a D810 or (better yet) a 5DS-R instead of the a7R II... mostly because of lens selection. There are no native f/2.8 zooms for Sony's E-mount system, and you need those for weddings. Or, at least, I need them for how I shoot weddings.

    This is a great video. Although hope the A7SII gets a firmware update (wishful thinking) to be able to use S-Log 3 at a stop more at least.
    But what kind of lenses personally do you want on the Sony A7 system? Focal lengths I mean also. I'm asking since I feel most of the zooms and primes fill quite well for me so far including the manual focus ones.

      +Neopulse00 "Although hope the A7SII gets a firmware update (wishful thinking) to be able to use S-Log 3 at a stop more at least. " stop more would be 3200 ISO, and you can use it 3200, 6400, 12800... you can't go lower

      +Dalibor Mrkic Yeah that would be. It's possible I have come to realize with other companies that were able to give quite crazy firmware updates like adding 4k recording when there was not before or better mechanical functions like AF thanks to updates. So it is possible. They might be holding back because of their video camera dedicated line like the FS700. But it is possible in my opinion.

    A7s II records xavc-s and Ninja Assasin prores. I was at Sony booth and I was told the output it is still 8bit. GH4 outputs 422 10bit whislt Sony 420 8bit. Apart from the stabilization why actually choose the the A7sII?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Polycord Filmworks We couldn't detect any improvement using 10-bit on the GH4 (check our review of the Shogun).

    There are great benefit to the fact that the controls are the same across the entire line. That is one of the things that I hate about Canon that every camera has a different layout and one thing I love about Nikon that no matter which camera I hold in my hands the controls are familiar. I fully use the A7II and A6000 and the wheel is just fine.
    As far as the A7SII, I am disappointed. One of the main reason I switched from Nikon to Sony was the low light performance from the A7s and the huge savings from not having to get the D4s. But I am a photographer and not a videographer so when I saw that the new A7SII only had contrast point AF and not Phase detection . That is a bummer and made the A7SII useless for me. The irony is that what I have already spent on the Sony system I could have bought the D4s. :(
    That said. I am happy with the A7II and the A7RII spite of it weaknesses over DSLRs. Just wish the A7SII would have been a photography camera.

      +FlashOneFilms We tested the overheating here: th-cam.com/video/XxxKAJtBnhA/w-d-xo.html
      And we've done all our filming with the a7R II since it was released and we haven't had any overheating issues. For us, it's really not a problem.
      SO MANY things are bigger problems: the terrible battery life, the lack of a touch screen, the lack of a proper directional pad... the overheating is the least of my concerns :)

    adding an external monitor is crucial for critical focus, a proper suite of shot exposure tools (histogram, vectorscope, waveform, and rgb parade). For people who are doing serious video, at whom this camera is targeted, they realize that the body alone is frequently not enough to frame, expose, a capture the highest level of video. also external monitors allow you to use LUT when filming in slog. For that you need a monitor.
    Even if you purchase the a7s II, you will still need an external monitor, unless you're exclusively a run and gun shooter.
    I think the real strengths of the a7s II are: short internal 4k clips (we've yet to see if it's affected by heat issues the way the a7r ii is), expanded slow motion, IBIS, and improved focus. If these things are important to you, the a7s II will be a good buy, but you will STILL need an external monitor. If they are not, the a7s is still a superlative tool fully capable of incredible results.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +trevorpinnocky Yeah, I agree about the external monitor. We do a lot of run-and-gun (and a lot of not-run-and-gun) and so I don't always use a monitor, but I often get back to review the shots and realized I missed focus, or focus drifted...

    Internal 4k with a bitrate at 100mb/sec amounts to approx. 25mb/sec HD1080p video. Hands down you'd still get better video with the previous model or the new mark 2 with an external 4k (or HD) recorder.

  • @nagol5178

    The FS5 they released looked more interesting to me than the A7Sii for video. Being a photographer though, I couldn't lay that much down on video. I'd go for the A7Rii. But as much as I like that camera, I still need the ergonomics of the Canon, the lenses, being extremely fast with it. I had the original A7R and did landscape shots with it, they are doing well. I still would like to see a pro body. Even though it would be bigger, I don't think mirrorless has to be about being smaller. Adapting lenses isn't a big deal for landscapes and things like that but every day shooting I don't want to adapt the big Canon zoom to it. For video I would. I don't care about auto focus in video.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +nagol5178 Yeah, we have a DSLR crowd on this channel, but most filmmakers will be happier with a proper video camera like the FS5.
      I will say that the a7S (and II) have one HUGE advantage--that full-frame sensor gives you background blur and low-light capabilities that you would need to spend $30k to match in a proper video camera. That's why so many people, like us, have hacked together a video rig from what is basically a body designed for stills.

    • @nagol5178
      @nagol5178 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've always shot video with full frame. I do have a smaller sensor I shoot 4k on right now. But I figure the super 35mm cameras will be a step in the right direction. Especially if you have 2.8 lenses. The problem is, if you put one of Sony's F/4 lenses on there, it's not gonna look like F/4 on the full frame. But that's still a shallow depth of field. Sometimes I forget how big an APS-C sensor is. Then I shoot something with my 4k video camera and remember, even F/4 on the super 35 is probably a good bit. I still would rather have a full frame sensor because I like that look.
