Kaji was literally the only adult in the show. By that I mean being capable of taking care of others in ways that they needed most. Misato, Shinji, Asuka, even Gendo.
Kaji is like the only adult character who basically has his shit together and treats Shinji like a person and not as a punching bag like the other characters have done.
i've seen others say before that kaji is the only eva character that actually has their shit together he knows exactly who he is and what he wants to do whereas every other main character has massive unresolved issues and that's why he had to be killed off

Kaji was the best! Most mature and wholesome of all. If you ever played the first Girlfriend of Steel you'll see how remarking was him protecting Shinji and his date even from himself.
In the manga, they go to an abandoned subway station thing and tells his back story and makes him realize how theyre both cowards for trading his friends life for his own since toji acc dies in the manga. He makes him see his mistakes of running away from his problems and encourages him to do sm abt it this time (correct me if im wrong im jus saying dis on top of my head and what i remember from the manga)
So, this scene is actually a huge meme in Italy. Brief history: Italy has three dubs for the entire series (EoE included). The first one is the only one available on DVD and is often regarded as a pretty well done dub overall. The third one is the Netflix redub, and while it's not bad people are kinda split on it. So, what about the second dub? Well, the third dub is actually the SECOND Netflix dub. The first Netflix dub was the second one, and it's BAD. So bad, in fact, that it was pulled from Netflix almost immediately and had to be replaced with the third one, which in fact used the same exact voice actors. I think that by now, it's actually completely lost media. Now, the problem with it was simply the script. The guy who directed the second dub is this idiot who's infamous in the anime community for his translation works because he sticks as closely as possible to the Japanese version. This includes GRAMMAR. So we get some extremely wonky sentences that no real human being would ever utter, coupled with some exceedingly unusual phrases and words for no discernible reason. This guy was in charge of about 95% of all Ghibli movies' dubs. So, when this scene came up in his dub, Kaji says something along the lines of "Well, Shinji, I can't do much besides standing here watering, but as for you, as for that which you can't do that you, for you there must be something you can do". Yeah.
thats really interesting. i never thought about how global eva is to the point where there are region specific memes about it lol. im american so i really only have an english speaker perspective on the show, so its been really fucking cool to see how much this scene has impacted people around the world. thanks for sharing man

I think Kaji was probably like Shinji when he was young, he did live through the second impact as a teenager.

My favourite scene from the anime. It really did inspire me to lift myself up when I hit a low point in my life.
