Exactly, I stopped reading my favourite genre "Self-help" books. Nicely put- They are just compass not a map! I think when you have something that you're truly passionate about, and want to take it to next level then these kind of books might help you to leverage, otherwise if it's just a mediocre life you're living, then, you're going to just buy and read books -nothing will come out of it!

I have opposite view. I totally agree with your statement that self help books won't help much because of many factor.
But the point is the reader will come to know automatically after reading 5-10 self books. So i recommend all Reader to read 5-10 good self help books with curiosity and even you grasp 5-10% thats good. After that you self realize that you need to move on to other gener like history, biography, economics, fact books, fiction etc.

My friend you are wrong, there are log of self help books which will tell you step by step how to complete the complex tasks. Self help will not only tell you what to do but how to do it.
For example to increase your productivity 2 times start making a to do list. Make a to do list in the night or in the morning. The list should be in order of priority, you will see a miracle. Initially you will find it difficult but if you follow your to do list you will start doing more and the results will start falling in.....

What is pathetic about self-help books is that they are very generic. The same content, yet presented in a different style. Then what's good about reading every self-help book that exists out there? As for non-fiction, biography books and informative books have to be our go-for books.

Exactly what I tell to people always. I started reading self help book 3 yrs back. then followed fiction, then biographies, then science and technical books. Now curretnly fully into technical books and biographies. If you want to read self help book. read the well researched book. Real well researched book are from 100 yrs befre. so read old book always. I read it somehwere that, if you want to get ideas, read old books. and the point is true. know about the author. IF you are reading a book related to brain and habits, know the author have well background in that field or if he did good research on that. Seriously this video will bbe a big eye opener for many! thanks for making it man.

I think “the compound effect” is the one book it will make you to implement things in our daily lifestyle it’s entirely different from other self help books. I have implemented things like writing journal consistently and walk for 30 min daily after reading the book the compound effect. Even before i used to do those things but bot so consistently but later the book made me to work consistently. And i never finished the book the 5am club after buying it is soo lagging.

Here are rules to reading self help books :
Rule number 1 : Treat books as operating manuals and not as motivational text
Rule number 2 : Apply the knowledge immediately to your life .
If the above 2 rules are not followed , reading books is a total waste of time .

If Someone is a good reader, the reader can actually get self help from reading all the other genres.
You learn how the character overcome the situations and what that characters mindset is read.
We all have had copied characters actions in a cartoon or a tv-show. We Need an example or an idol for us to be inspired as we can know that it be done if the character has done it. That's why books like the Alchemist work. It doesn't just give you advice but gives you an idea how it can be implemented.

I think "self-help" is a very generic term which can mean a lot of things: self-improvement, self-acceptance, psychology, philosophy, psychotherapy, health-advice, career-advice, personal finance, etc. Indeed there are a lot of stupid books in the market but I strongly feel the really good ones are genuinely worth reading, especially if they give specific insights on a problem that you really care about.
Some non-shitty "self-help" books that have helped me (most of them can be called ANTI self-help):
    - Books based on Buddhist ideas (including Subtle Art of Not Giving)
    - Books on Stoicism (Meditations, Letters from a Stoic, etc)
    - Books on cognitive biases e.g. Thinking Fast and Slow, Psychology of Money, Paradox of Choice, etc
    - Books on mental health and therapy (The Happiness Trap, Reasons to Stay Alive)
In general books that help you improve WITH your emotions, rather than AGAINST your emotions. And books that help you relate deeply with the author, rather than the preachy sort that claim to have figured out everything in life

Great topic! I questioned my inner guidance just yesrday asking where to hold to in case of too much external turbulence in the world I opened accidantly one book about Vedanta and my eyesight felt on the line telling that 'what counts is how you put everything into practice'. From my own observation, reading self help books without applying the knowledge into our own life is like reading all possible books about swimming techniques without ever dipping ourselves into the water. And the question is what exactly is the use of such knowledge besides giving us the false feeling that we know'. A self help book can help us in case we use it as a text book - we try it, verify it, question it and sometimes even outgrow it. But be ready for a hard work, no leisure reading 😁
