Steven is such a great listener - that could be the reason that he is so insightful and fastly grasps the meaning of a topic. Loved to see him get interviewed. Even more impressive that he is one of the podcasters that will give his guests the space, holds it and only adds to the person he is interviewing without interrupting or trying to hard to lead the way of the conversation.

As a 66 year old bloke who, by my own admission, hasn't done a lot of value in my life that I can be proud of, I find this interview in particular, but Chris's interviews and content generally to be a wonderful source of support. Self respect hit home here and the commitment to myself which I have been a spectacular failure at. I still don't understand how I've managed to be where I am as one of the more fortunate people in the world at the moment with mostly first world problems that I do my best to keep to myself. Thanks for providing such valuable information for the rest of us to draw inspiration from. Still many more years left to learn for me.

    Good evening Chris and Steven
No words without sounding like a Granny and a Mum. In this wee moment.
Just to say, my wonderful young adult kids should be paying attention to both your work, more than their Mum. I do continue to recommend though!
But admittedly I have gained so much from your shared work and associated guests you converse with, whom share their experience and knowledge.
Has been a lot of everything nearly, I have required over passing couple of years. Tough times!
    So wow, loving this.
    Grateful.
    Truly.

Hey just wanted to say thank you so much for this. I've been really struggling this year as have many I'm sure. Background of childhood abuse/neglect etc. Recent major depressive episode and a lack of self confidence that has been with me my whole life. Anyway although I've always been into exercise and eating well and positivity, etc. this year something changed and I took the short slide right down into the happy ball pit of hell. Suicide attempt, lost my job, the whole nine yards. But today... I got up early and went for a long walk (haven't gone for one in ages), planned my day out, took care of business and adhered to today's goals. I feel so much better. I feel like maybe I can do this. As a small reward to myself after dinner, I had some carrot cake lol (one of the best things to exist!), but only ate half instead of the whole thing like I usually do. I'm a huge pot smoker, but have decided to only smoke on the weekend instead of every damn night lol. My sleep last night was much better and I feel more energy already. Thanks for this encouraging video guys! I feel like I can do this. WE can do this! Don't give up! Everyone deserves to give themselves another chance. Cheers!

    The lonely chapter…
Thank you for shining a spotlight on a period of my life that has been so difficult to articulate to others. The transition between the person you were and the person you are meant to be is one of solitude - a time to reflect on the past and map out a path for your next journey.
Brene Brown’s words were so instrumental in my ability to reach the shore when drifting alone with my thoughts, insecurities and fears…
“I know what it means to stand alone and brave the criticism, fear and hurt. I know the freedom of belonging everywhere and nowhere at all. The reward is great, but the price is high. I have made this quest and I have the scars to prove it. It’s the paradox of feeling alone but also strong”.
Your conversation has been a refreshing perspective on our mutual struggles. Thank you for sharing!

Bartlett is right about us being ruled by our beliefs, but dead wrong about our being unable to change our beliefs.
After decades of conscious, intentional struggle, one thought at a time, I can honestly say that the contents of my mind are completely different from what they were when I started, to the extent that the 25 year old version of myself would not be able to in any way believe that he would grow into the person I am today, and would have absolutely no grid for understanding my motivations.
Not only that, but I'm able to drop my entire thought and feeling process at will, and simply be with what is.
So, don't believe that you can't change your beliefs.
BTW, The hardest part by far is choosing what to believe.

    • @plantpoweredpagan
      @plantpoweredpagan ปีที่แล้ว +2

Your conscious intentional struggle presented you with new evidence about yourself which is what Steven was actually talking about. He never said that it's impossible to change beliefs. Interesting how we can hear the same thing differently...:) Your journey sounds amazing and expansive.... more power to you ❤

The way Steven grasps knowledge, processes it and explain it just speaks to every cell in my being. I don’t think whoever is interviewing him has the same mental wisdom though, constantly intercepting the conversation, pivoting the conversation to what he wants it to mean and more importantly the part where he said “you will have to let go of the team you had when you started” when you grow assumes that while you grow, other people remain in the same place and it’s highly arrogant, I loved the way Steven rebutted that.

This episode was so content dense with the back and fourth conversations being so eloquently put that I had to keep rewinding to just grasp a concept that seemed to be delivered so effortlessly. I absolutely love watching two people who are genuinely passionate about the pursuit of knowledge discuss ideas and concepts in such a professional manner, but what else can you expect from two of the best podcasters out there!

34:32 I have thought about this so often and I really think it is both. A lot of wisdom comes with age for sure but some comes from our own deliberate searching.
I feel like a lot is yet to be seen though... we are in a new era where wisdom like this is so wide spread and more accessible to younger people than it would have ever been before. In the past I don't think elders shared their wisdom with younger generations so much, they just lived it and expected the youth to figure a lot out on their own. In some cases it was even taboo to talk on certain topics (eg Puberty/PMS/Consummation/Mental health/Abuse/PTSD etc)

I absolutely love you both so much. While I was listening to you speak, I thought of my daughter who said to me one day as I was "procrastinating," studying for an exam said Mom you need to protect your future self... what would she do? So, I now use this in my daily life especially when I don't feel like taking a shower, meal-prepping for the week, or pre-making coffee for the next day. I am a full-time nursing student and work on some days is really trying, however, her words like yours mean so much and I am watching and taking notes. Ty xoxo ~ J :)

I’m amazing at doing things for everyone else, my friends, family (with boundaries) and they would do the same for me.. however when it comes to doing for myself… BLANK! .. I wake up everyday and say how can can I show up with COMPETENCE for myself when no one’s watching today! It helps a lot!! Xx

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🖼️ The frame matters more than the picture. How you present something significantly affects its perceived value and desirability.
07:37 🤔 You do not get to choose what you believe. Beliefs are often shaped by evidence and experiences, and changing them requires encountering new evidence or interpretations.
11:05 🧠 Beliefs can be influenced by hypnosis, where new evidence and interpretations are introduced, challenging existing beliefs.
15:32 🤝 Prejudice and bias can be context-dependent, and even self-prejudice can impact our performance and self-esteem.
18:16 🤷‍♂️ It's more socially acceptable to be self-critical than to be self-encouraging, which can affect self-esteem and personal development.
18:45 📅 Keeping commitments to yourself is essential for self-esteem and personal growth. The size of the commitment you keep when no one is watching affects your self-esteem and self-story.
22:17 💪 Controlling your actions, like not picking up your phone before a morning walk, is an effective way to influence your thoughts and feelings positively.
24:10 🤝 Not keeping commitments to yourself can have a profound impact on your self-image and trust in yourself, leading to a downward commitment spiral.
29:58 🚀 Mastery and innovation often come from deep practice and commitment to your craft. Practitioners understand their field at a fundamental level.
34:43 💡 To gain wisdom and expertise, go out and fail at something valuable while being deeply passionate about it. The magic often lies in the work you avoid.
37:57 🔑 Discipline equation: Discipline equals the importance of the goal to you plus the psychological enjoyment you get from pursuing the goal, minus the psychological cost of pursuing the goal. This equation helps assess your motivation and discipline.
43:43 🔑 Insecurity and shame can be powerful drivers of ambition and motivation. Many people are driven or dragged by these emotions, leading to their success.
50:30 🔑 Losing fake ambitions driven by insecurity can make room for real, intrinsically motivated ambitions that align with your values and bring true fulfillment.
53:19 🔑 Early in your journey, pain, often driven by past experiences or insecurities, can fuel your motivation and drive to succeed. Thisinitial drive is essential for overcoming activation energy.
56:08 🔑 The "Lonely Chapter" is a phase in personal development where you outgrow your old circle of friends due to your pursuit of new goals. This phase can be challenging but is essential for personal growth and finding like-minded individuals.
57:01 💪 High performers often go through a lonely chapter when leaving their comfortable tribe, but this loneliness can be a necessary part of personal growth and success.
59:04 🌟 People fundamentally struggle with feeling different and not feeling like they're enough, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and unhappiness.
01:02:05 🎙️ Building for the long-term is crucial in business and life, and thinking of endeavors as infinite games can lead to sustainable success and a lasting impact.
01:04:55 📈 Retaining key talent, often referred to as disciples, is essential for maintaining a strong organizational culture and momentum.
01:09:37 🔍 Sweating the small stuff is vital for success, as small decisions and actions compound over time, whether in business, personal life, or relationships.
01:15:11 📝 The only way to accomplish a task is by actually doing it; preparation, scheduling, or talking about it won't suffice.
01:17:06 🌟 We are motivated by the avoidance of discomfort more than the pursuit of pleasure, which often leads to procrastination.
01:19:39 💪 Embrace pressure as a privilege for growth; it's essential to challenge yourself and face difficulties.
01:22:27 🤔 Your interpretation of pressure and discomfort shapes how you experience and cope with them.
01:28:09 🚫 Limit the feedback and scrutiny you expose yourself to, keeping your focus on your core principles and avoiding unnecessary distractions.
01:33:44 🧊 Running a business can be incredibly stressful, with the pressure of payroll and financial challenges being more daunting than dealing with media or public attention.
01:34:27 💡 The cost of success varies, whether it's the loss of privacy like Drake or the stress of running a business like Ben. Different endeavors have different costs.
01:35:23 🚀 Deep expertise can lead to rigidity. Innovators often come from unconventional backgrounds, unburdened by conventional thinking.
01:37:15 🔄 Circles we draw around ourselves can limit our potential. Believing in self-imposed limits can prevent us from realizing our true capabilities.
01:47:27 🧠 Avoid "mono thinking," where one ideology defines all your beliefs. Embrace nuance and resist being pigeonholed into a single ideology.
01:52:07 🧠 People often avoid conversations with those who disagree with them because it challenges their identity and creates cognitive dissonance.
01:53:18 📚 Exposing yourself to content you disagree with can be valuable for gaining new perspectives and insights.
01:54:55 💡 When you see strong beliefs in others that you find absurd, it can make you question your own beliefs and their fragility.
01:55:24 🤔 Challenging the beliefs that define your identity can lead to self-discovery and a deeper understanding of who you truly are.
01:57:56 🇬🇧 In the UK, there is a strong pull to conform, which can stifle individuality, innovation, and motivation.

Im a big fan of both Chris and Steven and was sooo happy to find this intelligent conversation between my two favourite podcasters! 🥰 I think you two should have a once a year podcast recording to catch up on all the insightful ideas you've learned since your last chat! Would you ever consider having Scott Mannion as a guest? He is an English writer, and professional film director who won the Au Directors Guild award awhile back. He used to live in LA for a time but left the evils of the Hollywood scene, returned to his native England to forge a dissident rebellion called the "Greenwood' publication. I would say what he tries to do is to rekindle the spirit of what art and literature ought to be. He does a great deal more than even what I can describe in a short paragraph. I just thought he would be a great addition to your already well chosen list of guests because he is witty, intelligent, accomplished, and most of all...he's a fellow Englishman. Cheers Chris, glad to see you doing so well! By the way, I never miss any of your news letters!
