  • How to convert the quill stem system to threadless?
    What size do you need? Before you begin to order a converter, measure and find out the size you need.
    Different sizes of quill stems:
    If the diameter is 25.4mm (1 1/8" fork), you’ll need 1 1/8” to 1 1/8” threadless converter.
    If the diameter is 22.2mm (1" fork), you’ll need 1” to 1 1/8” threadless converter.
    This my second purchase of the Profile Design threadless converter, the adapter converts your old quill style forks to use threadless stems.
    The top cap has a standard size of 32mm, therefore you need to install the stem before putting it into the steerer tube.
    The adapter couldn’t go any further.
    Before you tighten the top bolt, take out the converter and grease around it to avoid it from getting stuck at a later time.

    Can I used 22.2 stem adapter size to a 25.4 inner size of the fork, because I am not sure to the exact size of my MTB steerer tube? That is why I am planning to buy 22.2 stem adapter

    How do you measure the stem and what do you buy for your measurement? Same question for the handlebar attachment to the stem. Thank you.

    • @DanyoSports
      @DanyoSports  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a vernier caliper to measure the thickness of the handlebar and stem, you can get it at your local utility stores like Homedepot.

    my 90s mountain bike restoration uses an uncommon and odd size of 21.1mm which I believe is more common with BMX stems so to find an adapter for it is very hard

    • @fabiomaragna
      @fabiomaragna 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does that measurement comes from the stem itself? I got the same size by measuring the diameter of my existent quill stem with a caliper.
      I own an old giant boulder.

    • @SurgTT
      @SurgTT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fabiomaragnayup, it is the measurement of the stem needed to fit, when I was building the bike I bought a new quill stem with the regular 22.2mm sizing and it couldn't fit at all, was just a little too large to go in, then I did some research and realize there is an obscure 21.1mm on some mountain bikes also. I believe some old schwinn bikes uses the same size.

      @@SurgTT I’m doing a restoration of a 90s mountain bike myself and I’ve measured the diameter as 18mm. Any idea where to find these more uncommon sized quill stem adapters? Where did you find your 21.1mm?

    • @SurgTT
      @SurgTT ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannahwaltisbuhl1598 that is a very strange diameter, are you sure you measured it correctly? From my research I haven't seen any record of a stem smaller than 21.1mm

      Use a blowtorch on it to expand the metal then hit it with a rust penetrater or liquid wrench. Or you might need to soak it over night with the same stuff i mentioned or W.D.40

    Hello! What are the advantages of a threadless stem over a quill stem?

    • @DanyoSports
      @DanyoSports  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, a threadless stem gives you more options on stems (length and angle) and handlebars, for example, you could fit modern 31.8mm and 35mm handlebars.

    This is NOT a threadless conversion since the forks are still threaded. It's a quillstem conversion.
