    Great tutorial guys. Just one other thing that could have been mentioned would have been an explanation of storage charge. If you know you're not going to use your battery for an extended period never leave it in a fully charged or discharged state but instead use your charger to take it up/down to a safe storage charge level. Regards = Nidge

    Nice work guys, pretty much everything covered. Of course most of us don't get disposal info with batteries but I guess the best method is to discharge using a 12v globe (maybe in an outdoor concrete block), and then twist the +/- wires together before putting in salt water for a week.

      +Ido Kuttner If I may reply, get a capacity checker. You can find them on Ebay for real cheap (around 8 bucks). Do a search on lipo checker or meter. It tells you the status of each cell and how much it is discharged.

    Great video guys! I wish I saw this about 2 years ago. Luckily nothing bad happened. The online LiPo explanations can be daunting and very confusing to read for beginners.
    I typically stop flying around 3.6 mark, some people even say 3.7 is empty.

    • @ChristopherVo
      @ChristopherVo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I always recommend not discharging past the nominal voltage, land at 3.7; that's close enough to following the 80/20 rule. I teach that in my Multirotor 101 classes.

    • @Theeslickness
      @Theeslickness 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes its hard to judge the voltage since my fully charged 5a 3s goes down to 4.0v the moment I get in hover. And if I land at 3.65v the voltage returns to 3.8-3.9v. So is 3.7v in hover empty?

    Great videos for a noob like me. I'm considering buying additional/bigger batteries. (Current flight time is about 6 minutes.) I have motors with brushes and I've heard I need to let them cool between flights. How long should I let them cool and if I get a battery with more capacity, is that going to destroy the motors? Thanks in advance!

    Great video guys! But you guys should have covered storing you lipos for an extended period of time and putting them into storage mode at a voltage of
    3.80 volts per cell other wise if you leave them charged or discharged for a week or more they can start to break down and puff on their own. I always put my lipos into storage mode even if im only going to be waiting 2 days until the next time I fly. I have been flying my custom built H-Quad for almost a year now and I'm still on my first set of lipos, but I did have one get punctured and catch on fire in my hours. Talk about brown pants level scared. I was lucky that I reacted fast enough and grabbed the battery by the wires, jumped off my balcony, ran out the front door and put the garden hose on it for about 10 min. BE SAFE WITH YOUR LIPOS, OTHERWISE YOU WILL CRAP YOUR PANTS!!!

  • @elitebasker

    Got the same question about how to storage lipos. Charged or uncharged? for longer or shorter periods like months and weeks. Also what is the best way to storage lipos? i got a special bag when i charge and when i storage them when not using the lipos or is there any better way to storage like special boxes ect thx in advance!

  • @alasdairgeddes

    I have a 3 cell lipo that was slightly melted by a soldering iron. Should I still use the battery? If not then What should I do with it?
    Also, where in a house would it be safe to charge or store it? Do I really have to put it in a bucket of sand or a fireproof case when I charge it or can I just put it on a table?
    Now you've made me worry that my house will burn down if I keep batteries inside.... what if a battery explodes.... you mean I now have a load of active time bombs in my house that could catch fire at any moment....?

    I’m going to make the assumption that since Amps (Amperes) is current, the “C” may stand for current. Don’t take my word for it as it is just a guess. Thank you for producing this series, I’m learning heaps and soon my mate Spade who got me onto Flite Test will be teaching me to fly, Helicopters I can fly but planes he’s going to teach me :)

    Very helpful!! I have a quick question though, I have a 3 cell 2200 mah Lipo that has a 25c rating. On an average size rc plane, how long would the plane fly for? How would I find out? Also, the lipos I bought from amazon came with their own charger that they say is set to properly charge them. Is this charger legit because I am not too keen on buying an 80 dollar LiPo Charger?

    Nice video, but I was hoping you could address static current readings vs. under load. Do I land when the voltage gets to 3.3 volts during operation (ie via connected volt meter), or do I go by the reading on the ground after landing? Hard to find consistent info on this point.

    I have a battery question for y'all. I have a plane that says it needs a 4 cell setup, but I ordered some 3 cell batteries with the same discharge rate. The plane is a dynam devil 3d running a 650kv motor, 50 amp speed control, 13 x 6 prop, and a 3 cell 2200mah 25C battery. Think that battery will cut it on the plane? Or will it just blow up or be gutless in the air? I see yall running 2 cells on 3 cell setup planes, so can you do the same running a 3 cell on a 4 cell plane setup?

    Hey guys! I am brand new to the hobby. I still don't understand my strange attraction to flight but whatever, I think I'm hooked! So, my Horizon Delta Ray just arrived and I'm reading the directions. I come to the battery charging section and it tells me that I can get an AC adapter for the DC car charger and the amps limit should be 1.5A. Rather interesting question: In almost everything I have read about LiPos there is mention about charging and storing in fireproof containers... Yet, I never see it explained in detail and I never see anyone actually doing it that way.
    So..
    1. Do you recommend sticking the battery into a fireproof bag while charging?
    2. Do you store batteries at storage-voltage in a fireproof bag? I so, 1 per bag? As many as you can fit? etc?

    • @AbHjz
      @AbHjz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      actually what i do is that I put all my batteries in a surplus ammo can, it is pretty fire proof that if one of them or all of them caught on fire, nothing will pass through it , actually i transfer the batteries by my car while they are inside the ammo can (even the life battery for my Tx) ... i don't have enough fireproof bags to put all my batteries in , but the 2200 mAh is in one fireproof bag....this is for storage
      for charging , i put the battery in a fireproof bag and charge it, then remove it and put another one inside it and charge it .. for more safety,, i put the fireproof bag inside a trashcan , it is metal and that because i charge inside my house and i think that is much safer

      biglightbt Good to know, thanks! I'm very careful about all those things. My comment was a few months ago. Since then I've learned a lot. I am getting both a lipo bag and an ammo case, just for extra security. But currently, I'm flying a couple of batteries and I'm simply treating them nicely and never discharging them under 80%. Again, thanks!

      I use the BAT-SAFE to charge and store my batteries. They are $50-60, and well worth the insurance. You could put a paper towel on top, explode the battery, and the paper wouldn't catch fire. As importantly, it will filter the black soot out of the smoke. The fumes are still extremely toxic. If your battery blows, even in a lipo sack, you will still experience massive smoke damage, even if nothing catches fire. Before I owned my bat-safes, I used to charge my batteries in my oven.....with the oven off, of course.

    I wonder when you guys are going to do a video on battery swap mods like using 18650 batteries in place of stock Li-Po packs you find on most quadcopters and such. Want to see if a quad can use one of these in place of a stock 1S battery.

    If two motors have a limit of 14v can I wire a 6s battery in series to double the flight time with a safe voltage

    curious, so you'd mentioned 9.9 v ? so when flying should I set my timer to 9.9 v to land or I can stop and land with 3 v?

      9.9 is 3.3V/cell. So yes, that's where you want it. That gives you a safe-range to bring it down. (I've got mine set to warn me at 32% and kill the motor at 30% to protect the battery. That's 10.2V for mine that the motor dies.) That 2% gives me about a minute to get it down and pop flaps before it turns into a glider.

    Some thoughts on storage voltage would be nice. 3.85v per cell is what i understand. Question is, is the a certain amount of elapsed time when you should consider putting the lipo in storage state? I would imagine if its only going to sit for a few days, might as well leave it fully charged...

    hi.
    how about the storage conditions in terms of temperature? What is common for LiPo's?
    thx

    How do I store batteries? In a lipo bag obviously but how charged should they be? And if I don't have a charger that smartly puts it at the specific charge level how do I get it there?

    I'm having a hard time choosing a charger. There's a lot of useful information here but the batteries on the Flite Test store have an odd looking connector and I can't figure out what type of charger to buy for them. Any help?

    Hi,
    I have tried to find info on on C rating and I do not mean the 1C, 2C and so on when u charge, got that covered. I mean the C rating with the burst 10-15sec.
    I now have a battery that is Zippy 5800mha 30C and burst 40C and that one is also recommended for my quadcopter F450 (stock) with Nasa M Lite + GPS.
    Question:
    Can i buy a 40C,50C or 60C battery to my quad or will that damage the components?
    I also wanna say thank you! Flite Test for all the videos and beginner series, keep them coming :)
    Best Regards

    Helo,
    I'm a beginner and some point is not clear for me in the RC electronic system. I would like to ask you that can it causeing some problem if I use a 2800mAh 11.1V 30C battery with a ZTW Beatles 20amps ESC 2-6LiPo what is connected to a SUNNYSKY Angel Series A2208-1260KV 2-3S Airplane Outrunner Brushless Motor (max continuous current: 13A) The propeller size is 1047. So my question is that this battery with the 84A can destroy the ESC or the motor? Or the ESC takes only that amount of amps what the motor and the rest of the parts needs? Will it works with these parameters?

    I am an old hand from the NiCad days, so these lipos are new to me. my charger will do more than lipo, but it does not have a discharge mode. how do I get my batteries into discharge for storage voltage. running the motor seems like a bad idea due to heat buildup.

    I think that ether my 3s 10000mah is to heavy for my drone or my throttle is to low. I try to fly my tarot fy690s with 750kv motors and 1355 propellers but it does want to lift. Do you think that a 3s 10000 mah is to heavy?
