ONE THING!!! With RC Cars, the low voltage cutoff is RIGHT before the cell is about to drop to 3.0-3.2v usually, (per cell ofc) so you guys still ALWAYS want to use one of these because not doing so will 1: Have a chance of harming your bat or ECU and 2: not put it at storage having you to charge it afterwards if you're not gonna use it. Put one on anyways, it will save the life of your car, and it will save your lipos in the long run. Happy bashing
I'm just getting into the hobby of RC flying and I found this video informative and worth watching and NOT boring. Thank you for bringing this out to us.
A trick for newbies and those of us with fading memories/eyesight, marking the side where the ground is on the alarm/tester with a permanent marker makes it easier to align the balance lead correctly
I have been out of RC flying for over 20 years. WOW how things have changed. And I flew all gas engine planes at that time. Now just getting back into it (3D printing planes) and all the new electric planes is totally new to me. Thus, all this new battery usage is new to me. THANK YOU so much for saving me some money and keeping me and my family safer!!!! Your info is fantastic!!! Greg
10:25 If you want to make your batteries last much longer (total lifetime, not use time per charge), never ever charge individual cells above 4.15 V. Also, the lifetime will also improve if you never go below 3.6 V but if you always stay within 3.6 V and 4.15 V to make cells last longer, the Wh per charge you can get from the battery is obviously going to be lower. You get maybe 80% out if you stay within those voltages.
I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago along with a AeroScout RTF plane and four extra smart batteries. I've been connecting the lipo alarm to the battery before I install it in the plane to check the readings. So far, I haven't flown the plane long enough to have the alarm sound (I've set it at 3.40). It is nice to be able to check the readings on the alarm when I'm finished flying. So far, I've been down to the 3.60 level. I bought the AeroScout RTF after viewing a couple of your videos on it and I've been thrilled with it so far!!!
I use these in my RC boats, so I have half a chance of hearing Lipo voltage before they get stranded in the middle of the water. I soldered an LED to one of the buzzer connections for a visual too. Great & informative.
EXCELLENT VIDEO...**** At 77 years old I appreciate this video.....You explained the battery tester perfectly. I have yet to solo. I just bought 2 of them.. Thank You ! John Meksa....Florida.
YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER, Nate. This is another excellent info training on the small extras you have learned along the way that mean so much to each of us. I flew my first R/C model plane a Top Flite model, the Top Dawg, with a galloping ghost radio in 1968. I learn something from you each time I watch The Rc Saylors, just goes to show you CAN teach an Olde Dawg new tricks!
I'm new to this RC world and my lipo battery lasted only 1 month and I was so confused and now I got this. Thank you for the valuable info. This was the best video I've seen about this checker thing. You explained perfectly. 🙏
Thanks for the information. I picked up a couple of these to use with my new Aeroscout. Have been flying fairly slow as I am learning so it is great to be able to fly until you hear the alarm. Have been getting 25 minute flights with lots of gliding. Fantastic information!!!
I'm glad I found this video because I just received an order for 20 pairs of XT-60 connectors and they threw in one of those checker/alarms free and now thanks to you guys I know what to do with it..
Just found this video! This is awesome. I have two of these gizmos and this video taught me so much. Please continue making these great videos. Love the plain language. I got out of the hobby 20 years ago in the NiCd days and just got back into it 3 years ago and the LiPos scared the hell out of me. Videos like this help me to feel more comfortable in knowing what I'm doing. Thank you so much.
I fully agree with everything you said on the video, I've been doing as you said for years, I've handed out these to fellow club members to help them save their planes and their batteries, they're also a great tool if the plane goes down in a field, serving as a great locator device once the charge naturally goes down even though it might be that night or the next day. I wrap a thin rubber band around mine to secure them to the balance plug so that it will not dislodge if the plane goes down so that I can find it in a tree or in a field with high wheat, corn or soy.
thanks for reminding me i have a drain injury & my memory is not their.like i have it wrote down which switch to turn on first remote or truck so thanks please keep the video coming for us simple folk.keep up the good work
Those things are freaking loud! Don't fool with them late at night if you have roomates! Having them come running because they think a smoke alarm has gone off is *not fun*! But, yes, I bought a bunch when someplace, I forget where, had them on sale for 5 for $5 USD. Great devices.
My name is Eugene Salmon I am new to this RC airplane hobby I really count on your videos on TH-cam because I learned so much from them you never talk down to me and never Will I like to learn everything I possibly can and you will explain everything thoroughly thank you
So true, Nate! I love those things - I stash them everywhere. I had never noticed the little button! Thanks very much for the lesson, Saylors - not boring at all! Have a gorgeous day.
@@TheRcSaylors You made it well and chock full of info. These gauges seem like a silly little thing, but they're really useful and important, and far overlooked by our TH-cam community. I'm glad you made it, and I will certainly share it as the definitive video about cell maintenance. So, thanks again! I bought a fresh 5 pack just last week, and I see in the comments that a few other folks did, too lol
Yeah definately a must have cheap tool for lipo batteries. Also great for checking your batteries when they have been left in storage charge for a while. We have used these over the last few years and the majority of our lipo batteries are holding up well.
I had seen these previously on other channels and assumed they were expensive , then you guys mentioned in passing how cheap they are . Bought a pack of 5 for $10 Aus , they work great and even came with understandable instructions . Very helpful in ground vehicles also , as it's easy to just drive until the battery's nearly dead before you notice . The info re voltage level settings was useful to me , thanks very much .
OMG!!! You are AWESOME!!! SOLD!!! This is good because I got a telemetry radio for the sole purpose of reading the battery voltage but, dung, it only works up to 4 cells. My Notorious lasts for so long that stopping at storage mode is very convenient but so far I have been guessing terribly. Thank you!!!
Got these about two years ago..... never used them. Mainly because I did not know or understand how to use them. After this video, I have a great working knowledge and know why to use them. Thanks, keep doing what your doing, I turn to you two for a lot if hobby and product info. You two are couple goals!
" Nobodys needs a Batterybuzzer! We simply fly(guestimate)the battery level according to the total flight time. that's how we do it since the beginning in the 70s" only a few quotes from my local RCClub. I personally always drive/fly with a battery buzzer. Thank you RCSaylors
Yeah we used to use stone knives too. You got guys that refuse to learn needed skills so they rest on "we used to do it back in......." Same with "smart chargers" for dumb people, some don't know and don't want to know what the values of the battery means. This comes from an attitude of just wanting to have fun and not doing anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. I think it can also be used to locate a lost plane if you shut off the transmitter it beeps.
Bought a pack of five--still use the same one for all flights; it has more air time than anything else I own. TOTALLY worth it. I set it to go off at storage voltage so that I can just chuck the LiPo in its protective sleeve and not worry about it.
Hi great video once you have plugged the battery into the balance lead and set the cut off alarm when you connect a new battery will the battery monitor remember what it’s set at or do you have to reset it every time thank you John
Awesome video Nate ! Very important to know. That was the first thing I bought even before I had a lipo battery! I love your educational videos! I can't thank you enough for all you have taught me! Thanks again for another awesome video Nate & Abby !!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍😀
Extremely good video for anyone in this hobby... i have had those for many years... i also get lazy and do not discharge before storing...cost me 100's easy in last 15 years using lipos...also if you ever cash a plane far in the woods and are lucky enough to have had low voltage set and start beeping before your crash it should be an easy find if everything stays connected...

I am just getting back into flying after being out for a good number of years. I am going back into this with all electric planes. This will be a very good device to help save my batteries. Thank you very much for this informative video.
these are great! i dont know how these arent more popular. you dont need them allways, but when u are flying a new plane and you dont know the flighttime its the best thing
Good Tip Mister! I have one but dont use mine. I use an oven timer and keep it next to me. I can hear it better and seems like I have problems setting mine up. It always goes off but the battery has tons of power. I know its because I dont set it up right. I have been flying all my original batterys of 3 years so my idea of having a timer is that I have never ran a battery dead because I ran it out. I have crashed and lost batterys like that. I had one that no longer gave me battery voltage through the lead. It would through the main red and black leads but not through the smaller lead. I had no idea why. My guess is the internal cut off became corrupted. No wires came off because I removed the cover. Without a balance lead, you cannot properly charge a battery. No idea on that battery. I did over charge it on purpose and then punched a nail through it. POOF! no more battery.
My son and I are doing the research to know as much as we can, as we plan on getting started in the R/C world in the coming months. While I have a very good understanding of electronics and electricity, your videos are dumbed down just enough to be sure I think of everything involved. Yet still informative enough that anyone can get all the info needed. Thank you so much for these excellent videos.
These are great for any application that uses lipo batteries and pair well with a smart charger as great investments or gifts for your favorite rc enthusiast. I use lipos for rc, airsoft, and to power little whachmadoodles in my costumes and these always let me know when to swap out or get ready to pack up.
@@TheRcSaylors I just want to thank you three, or I guess 4 now, for what you do. You, Abby and Popeye have always been a great resource for honest feedback on all rc. Not just hobby grade. I bought many a toy grade for fun and experimentation based on your reviews. So again, thank you.
Just re-entering RC world. Spent hours digesting info on LiPo batteries charging and storage, when I came across this video. With my new education this video is the most sensible one I've seen on TH-cam and explained in a way that ties ALL of my learnings together. You even mention LiPo bags and ammo can although from what I've seen the bags are mostly worthless on their own! I will use a modified toolbox, a skill saw metal box, or a BBQ grill outside, on concrete, for ALL of my charging episodes. AND this little tool will always be within reach, or onboard my airplane. I would be a 3.6v alarmist lol because I might need a little longer to land and later find my self right at a consistent 3.8v storage charge. Thanks for this video and your introduction to the least expensive ESSENTIAL tool I've ever seen! Have a great day.
I listened to you and bought some. I finally received mine today from Banggood. I feel my rc level went up by 2 experience points. I watched the video again to relearn how to set the alarm. Cool stuff.
Many thanks valuable information. Bought one today so from now on I will follow your advice. Thanks again. I'm 74 and having a ball with my mini apprentice.
For cars, you could also use generic multimeter and measure voltages between the balance wires but this small thingy is easier to use. Plus you cannot get generic (digital) multimeter for $2.
You know,I never thought about that I so strictly adhere to my flight timer.Mybe the next rime I fly I should try to use my lipo alarm.I think you got a point.
I’m so glad I watched this video. I’ve just got back into the hobby of RC planes and never used this in the past. I’ve been watching your channel for quite some time now as all your content is very enjoyable and informative to watch. This video is just perfect and I’ve now bought two alarms on Amazon for my 3S 2200mah G1 spektrums. Thanks Nate!
I've recently purchased several lipo testers after watching your video. I am new to the hobby, and I thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. VERY USEFUL
I think u did a great job makeing it completely clear how important the little 2$ investment is. Considering people put 100s even 1000s of doller in the air and across the ground! Nice teaching. Nate if I could understand it U reached the lowest light bulb out there! Thank RC Saylers
I bought the tester for my lipo batteries and I absolutely love this tester,it's fairly cheap, should charge more for the tester but this little tester is fudging awesome....thank you brother
yep....these little alarm "beeper" things are great! I have 8 of them. I keep them in my truck glovebox, my field box, my tool box, and I make sure the others are easily found, when needed.
I knew all of this already but it was great to have it reinforced and I have to admit that I rarely storage charge my non DJI batteries as I like to be able to go flying at a moment's notice as the opportunities to fly are not frequent. I know they won't last as long that way but what I do do is to make sure that I never drain my batteries beyond about 25% and I use this very same battery alarm for that purpose, though one can't for single cell as there is no balance lead!
Thanks for the information. Just getting back into rc after 30 years. Wow have things changed especially the power packs. So this helped me a bunch. Gives me more confidence in running a expensive boat. Thanks
I completely agree. I can't believe it took me as long as it did, then I had to have 7. But....... I pulled those obnoxious beepers out of most of them and I like that a whole lot better.
Ive owned this tool for a few years now and never knew about the tiny switch or didn't know I should use it in my plane while flying, by golly I know now!! Good job dude and thanks!!!
I have bought four of these alarms. A massive thank you. Without you, I would never have known about these alarms. Keep making videos like this. They are extremely helpful. Love you guys, keep it up, you're great.👍👍👍👍😉
I've used them for years. Mainly in my RC helicopters application. They work great. Depending on your flying you can kill a heli battery quickly, 3D vs scale flying varies greatly on battery drain... It's a great cheap simple device. I also use it on my RC Grave digger that has sound and lights... O'h also put it on the Feilum FT011 you guys sold me on... Year later Istill love the boat I noticed the built it in voltage cut off built into the ESC ran a little to low for me.. My Esc was cutting the motor down to idle speed at about 2.8-3.0 volts I swelled a battery up in less than a year... Waiting for the motor, ESC to crap out then replacing it all with Castle system.. :)
Excellent advice! I have about 20 of these sprinkled throughout my RC gear and I give them away to friends I get into LiPo rc's too! Cant be too safe with LiPo's!!
I have something like this attached to some of my older cars that don’t have a LIPO cut off built-in to the ESC mine actually solder to the ESC connector and when the voltage gets low it beeps I love that I can use the old electronics with the new LIP0 batteries
I use these to monitor my LIPO battery discharge on old electronics like old esc that don’t have LIPO cutoff protection. The alarm 🚨 goes off when my LIPO battery 🔋 is going low. Cheap insurance for sure.
Yes, they were the thing 7-8 years ago, before we had telemetry in our RC systems - you might have heard of Frsky radios which include smartport telemetry allowing the connection of very cheap sensors - one of which (FLVSS) you can connect your LiPo balance cable so you can see (and hear if you want) your battery voltage as you fly - on your radio. Those bleepers do work, but honestly, real time telemetry in your hands is so much better. You should take a look.
And we have another crucial bit-o-info from the RCSaylors team. Thanks for the info, just bought a 4s pack for $80, worth $2 to protect it. Good job folks!
Hey Nate, stop saying boring. It wasn't. Very good info. You rock young man. If anything, the misses learned something. Good to know info. Also what happens if your battery voltage drops to low and you try to charge it.
I want to thank you for the lipo 101. I am getting back into RC planes and cars after 20 years. I know nitro and in in NICAD. This video was the best thing I have seen on lipo yet. BTW, I bought the Eflite Valiant 1.3 based on your and Abby's recommendation. You are 100% right. Best all around plane EVER? Keep up the good work and stay safe.
NOT boring; Essential info! I wish 3 years ago someone had explained this important tool, I've always had, but never used, because I was a newbie. Great video, thanks for explaining in detail. 💯👍
Super informative video! Just bought my first electric truck and my first electric plane and this will come in handy so I just ordered a 5 pack of those devices. I'm used to flying my drones which all have smart batteries and so they just land themselves when it's time! Don't ever worry about talking down to people either because as techy as I think I am, I just learned a ton from this video! Those that already know can simply not watch or use a filter! LOL
for ground vehicle users u can get a more advanced version of these. they will tell you a read out like this one, both overall voltage and each cell and the percentage of the full charge, they will allow you to plug a servo in the side and test it, you can also see amp and voltage draw of a particular servo. they also allow u to balance out any indifference in a fully charged battery to make cell voltage match. i think they are like 10 dollars or so
Great video! I used to fly glow planes years ago and just now getting back into the hobby but going electric this time. No more spending hours cleaning oily planes. This was very helpful in increasing my understanding of caring for my batteries. Thanks.
Great video, guys! Perhaps Professor Saylor could expand a bit from the basics, and explain WHY the LiPo alarm is needed...WHY is 3.8v the “magic number”...why don’t we simply run a LiPo dead, like we did with NiCad’s and NiMH’s...why don’t we store LiPo’s at FULL voltage? Also, you left-out another benefit of running LiPo alarms in aircraft: if you crash and/or lose your aircraft, voltage drop will eventually trigger the alarm, which should help you locate your aircraft. 👍🏼
I can’t remember whether Nate discussed those topics in his previous battery/charger videos, but perhaps he did. At any rate, just an FYI that those other videos exist, in case you are interested.

Great video I'm a newbie and I find these videos very information thanks to you and Abby you got and the drones and planes great work keep it up
these are great! i dont know how these arent more popular. you dont need them allways, but when u are flying a new plane and you dont know the flighttime its the best thing
Sometimes you may fly more aggressive or less aggressive even on the same plane, meaning very different flight times. I say use them always 👍⚓😎
I had mine for 3 months and it's been 95% accurate. The only downside is when it beeps.
Lol, fair enough! Yeah I dont fly without one, and when we drive trucks we always have one handy 👍⚓😃
Ur right they are slightly off check batt with multimeter. But alarm. Is cool
If this was the Navy, and I was having fun with a new recruit, I would tell him to weigh the batteries to see when they're full.
"And while you're at it, get the batteries for the sound powered phone!" 🤣
Don't forget the left-handed Crescent Wrench!!
LOL You can also ask for a gallon of prop wash if you want to mess with folks.
@@johnisbell9220 Or a few yards of flight line.
This episode was very interesting and informative! That device delivers benefits far exceeding its minimal price!
These are great for any application that uses lipo batteries and pair well with a smart charger as great investments or gifts for your favorite rc enthusiast. I use lipos for rc, airsoft, and to power little whachmadoodles in my costumes and these always let me know when to swap out or get ready to pack up.
Yeah you are absolutely right! Great for airsoft as well 👍 Thanks a lot for tuning and and kudos for using this awesome little tool ⚓😃
Thank you for the lesson Mr and Mrs RcSaylors, you guys ROCK!
Early squad where you guys at (:
Fam Jay! Hope you are getting ready for a fun weekend 👍⚓😃
TheRcSaylors I am going take my drone to my sister place and she has lighthouse going to be awesome and amazing vids like always friends 👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎
Great video, Have purchased these in past to check voltage, never realized how much more they can do! Thank you for explanation!!
Nice I will consider it today for my wl toys 12428
I listened to you and bought some. I finally received mine today from Banggood. I feel my rc level went up by 2 experience points. I watched the video again to relearn how to set the alarm. Cool stuff.
First
Yes
👍⚓😃
My favorite thing to give to people who are new to lipos and my most used item for rc besides my transmitter
Thanks y'all! I've been flying for over 12 years, and have never used these. Lost several batteries due to over discharging.
Thanks for the video Nate . You are right. Good insurance device. Use them all the time.
Just bought a couple of these last month for the reasons you talk about. I believe the have 1 cell checkers now. Great video. It's fun to learn.
Glad we could help! Happy RCing 👍😁😎⚓️
yep....these little alarm "beeper" things are great! I have 8 of them. I keep them in my truck glovebox, my field box, my tool box, and I make sure the others are easily found, when needed.
Not boring. Inexpensive, important information. Refreshing! Hobbies tend to be, more marketing, less value.
Thank you so much, this was an eye opener for me, excellent video and I learned a lot and I am 75
One of the clearest explanations of lipo info ever, thanks alot, really helpful
I have something like this attached to some of my older cars that don’t have a LIPO cut off built-in to the ESC mine actually solder to the ESC connector and when the voltage gets low it beeps I love that I can use the old electronics with the new LIP0 batteries
I am new to the hobbie and am VERY thankful for videos like these to give me the assurance I am doing things correctly. Thanks so much.
Good video. Thanks. I have just taken delivery of a bunch of these and now know how to use them, thanks to you.
I use these in my daughters best choice products jeep. wired it up for lipos. Works great i set em for 3.5 per cell and the beeping is unignorable
