I'd love to see a return to the Bar Basics series. After watching many of your videos I'd love to see your take on a few staple alcohols, liqueurs, and syrups that a standard home bar should have. Stuff that doesn't break the bank, and won't go bad super quick. Keep up the great content! My wife thinks you've made me an alcoholic.

    • @ryanswartout7311
      @ryanswartout7311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fully agree.
I would love to see a Bar Basics on what you should have in your Bar. Like an Eight bottle Bar, then a 12 bottle Bar, ect.
I have finally decided that I need to clear out my old Bar and make a more refined Bar. Removing all of the 90's cheap Liqueurs and spirits; then replacing them with ingredients for real cocktails.
Just need to know what priority to do the replacing.

Greg, thank you for this video! I love reference material and I will be adding some of these to my library.
Your videos, specifically your passion for this topic, has been an inspiration for how I am approaching certain aspect of my plans for the future. Please, keep doing what you love and sharing that journey with us.

I was absolutely not expecting to have any of the books you have, but I do! I've got a vintage copy of Saucier's Bottoms Up because I've somehow started a collection of cookbooks with pinups in them.
Great video, I'll have to look at a few others of these, but I thought that was funny enough to mention. :)

Got a bit of a bartending beginners question here:
I make drinks on occasion, but when I do its usually make one of the few drinks my dad taught me from his club running days or a simple Cuba Libre, but I'd LOVE to expand my repertoire of cocktails and tasty beverages. I'm a huge fan of cooking and I'm all about flavor, so I'd really like to expand my horizons into the drinking world, but the problem is I don't know where to start.
In your opinion, would would be like... the most ideal first 5 to 10 bottles of booze I can buy that'll give me the most versatility of good cocktail making choices? Any by that token, what are some syrups/other things I should also have on hand to serve the same purpose?

Great stuff! I would also highly recommend "Schumann's Bar" by the German barkeeper legend Charles Schumann. Tons of recipes, tips for setting up your bar, an introduction to a ton of different ingredients, glasware and so on. It is compact, has a high quality and should be a staple in any bar. I have the German edition, but there is an English edition as well

The Dave Arnold book really is great for both beginners and advanced cocktail enthusiasts. The only drawback is that it will make you want to spend tons of money on weird specialty equipment, like a centrifuge.

Though I like cocktails I'm pretty much a "tea totaler" when it comes to booze because I like sweet drinks vs the more manly sugar free drinks such as a Martini. I'm now in the process of buying my own copy of "Fix the Pumps" based on your review. I may not become a bartender renown but I could be one hell of a old time soda jerk.

awesome books greg, the irony is I use your channel as my go to cocktail guide. It comes full circle!
I'm keen to give more tiki drinks a go. its an area very few of us delve into i think.
Is there some sort of connection between you having "the savoy cocktail book" and your theme song being "the savoy special" or just a really awesome coincedence?
    cheers mate,

Books from Jeffrey Morgenthaller, Jim Meehan or other bartenders have mainly repeating information apart from the recipes, of course. The book that I found really innovative was Zen & tonic. I do recommend for those who want to bring their cocktails to another level. Also I found interesting to read pastry books and other books about cooking. Really fun stuff but what's important, many things can be used in drinks from cooking

  • @ShallieDragon

Two that I have that you might consider are Art Of The Bar by Jeff Hollinger and Rob Schwartz and The Bar Book by Jeffrey Morgenthaler. The latter is especially interesting, as it focuses on techniques of handling your ingredients, rather than just the ingredients themselves. Like, it has an entire chapter on how to source and juice citrus.

I'm a big fan of Duggan McDonnell's "Drinking the Devil's Acre" and its exploration of San Francisco cocktail history. (Yeah, I'm late to this party, but I'm a tech worker with a busy life...) Anyway, Devil's Acre has great cocktail history along with some great drink recipes, and others like Meyer lemon marmalade and beef tea. I highly recommend that you check it out.

You need to get some of Jeff "Beachbum" Berry's books. He's the tiki version of Wondrich; if not more dedicated into finding the history and secret recipes of tiki. Without the Bum we wouldn't have Martin Cate.
I haven't been to either Latitude 29 (Berry's) in New Orleans or Smuggler's Cove but cannot wait to visit them.
If you want to learn a lot about tiki but in video format, I recommend the channel 'Distinguished Spirits'. They are great videos with great recipes and great history included.
I also recommend Martin Cate's videos that he did for ChowHound.

Cocktail Codex, Death & Co, The Bar Book, Bartenders Manual, The Essential Bartenders Guides, The Joy of Mixology (my favorite) The Craft of Cocktail ( tied with Joy of mixology). All these books are super good. Now, I bought Liquid Intelligence and it was not for me, in my opinion, a bit too much of everything for no reason. Imbibe! Wow, I had to buy it out of respect for history, but Jesus that book is so heavy it bores the crap out of me. I won't return it but I don't know if I will ever thoroughly read it. I hope someday I'm able to see and agree with the rest of the people who praise it so highly. Nonetheless, respect to the legend Jerry Thomas.

Not really an essential book in my opinion. I own it mostly as a tribute to Dale, and I can't remember having consulted it after reading through it the first time. It was probably a useful guide back when it was first published, but it covers mostly basic techniques and recipes, i.e. nothing you don't already know if you have dabbled a little in cocktails already.
