Fun fact: アイ or 愛 means love and ドル means "US dollar" or "doll". So basically アイドル can mean "Love Doll" or "Love Dollar".
I’m sure many people already pointed out, those lines in the middle are from the supporting cast who feel sidelined because Ai is getting all the attention.
Also, while the lyrics are largely unchanged you should try to listen to the Japanese version with subtitles.
The lyrics are absolute gold, there are multi-layered details like her calling herself Maria which may be a parallel to Mary. Moreover Maria is said to mean "star of the sea," "rebellion," "bitter sea," and "drop of the sea." Maria is also associated with the meaning "beloved" and "wished for child".
Plus there’s details like the choir says “you’re my saviour, my saving grace”
Fun Fact: in Hoshino Ai's name, "Ai" means "love"(2:38), and "Hoshi" means "want," so it could mean "want that love," but "Oshi" is what you typically refer to idols you like. There are more meanings you can research, but this is what I got. Others can probably explain better
The part you were confused about, its most likely the other girls' pov in B-komachi, Ai's idol group. They pretty much knew they were just there to make her shine brighter/that they were only so popular because of her.
The lyrics are heavily inspired (at times just straight up quoting) the short story "45510" which is from the POV of one of the B-Komachi members, so ya...
To elaborate a bit more, the other girls in the idol group are torn. Yes, they understand that Ai is special. Yes, they know that they could only be so popular because of Ai. But no, that does not stop them from harboring jealousy against Ai. But they also can't help to be charmed by Ai. The ones closest to her became the most devoted fans of hers, rejecting any trace of imperfection. Hence "I won't allow anyone if it's not you strongest of all".

The short story that was the inspiration for the song by aka Akasaka really explains the pov and the emotions of the other members of b-konachi
I love the way they translated this song. The lyrics sound very similar to the japanese version without losing its meaning.
i think it's because they pronounce the english words literally similar to how they pronounce kanji (i think that's what it's called), it does match the original audio but because of that, the pronunciation's a bit odd in a western POV, example in 1:10 the "as sweet as honey" sounded like "asweetas honey", sacrificing proper western pronounciation in favor for the original tone of the original audio
@@jordanlobo8512 Kanji is one of the three character groups used in Japanese alongside Katakana and Hiragana. It's the most complicated of the three and the least used as well. The Japanese language is interesting in how it's structured because each of those character sets can be seen as their own kind of alphabet and are used in conjunction with one another. However they don't hold any bearing on actual speech unless you're reading something out loud. It's usually the opposite where a word can be spelt in different ways using different characters to alter the meaning slightly or even drastically. Names are a pretty common one to have multiple meanings depending on spelling. I don't know the language personally at least not writing but I know someone who grew up there and speaks the language so I learned a few things being around them for so long.
It still could’ve been a lot better. For fun, I rewrote some of the lyrics to make it sound even closer to the original, while keeping the same meaning. A couple of parts sound awkward. Still pretty good overall

It's always crazy when a Japanese singer makes an English version of their own songs.
And yes, it's really nice that you can hear the lyrics now because Yoasobi really showed a lot of love for the series. Imagine being a fan of the manga when the anime came out and seeing how it gets an opening that feels like it was written by a fan like yourself

@@shivu6377 The only thing, in the englisch version there gets a bit of the wordplay with her name lost. "Ai", her name, does also means "Love", so on some parts of the Lyrics they are interchangable. "So, lying surely is the greatest kind of Love" could also be "So, lying is the greatest kind of Ai" - you could say the greatest Version of her as Idol, as example for that.

Like Zenzenzense English version included the word "zenzenzense" instead of it's meaning "past-past-past life" in the lyrics in order to make it sound better.
The English version might not be better than the Japanese one but is great in its own way
Yoasobi was the perfect group for this anime OP.
It breathe new life into it instead of just making a English cover, it have been adapted for the English language that's coming from Japanese background.

The original version of "Idol" had a very strong impact on the Japanese audience with YOASOBI's deep understanding of the world of the manga/anime work and their astounding representation of it. Imagine a song that is extremely wonderful as music, with a strong message that moves the listener, and even reflects an extremely deep understanding of the original story.
In recent years, anime songs have become very closely associated with the work. They should not be confused with the tie-ins of the past. Nowadays, performers and songwriters are told by the producers to understand the work well and create a song that fits it.
Moreover, Japanese culture, especially in the realm of anime, is highly contextual. This contextual understanding is often applied subconsciously. As a result, even if a song is designed to be "enjoyable for the music alone", it can often be less enjoyable to those unfamiliar with the context.
Therefore, to fully appreciate anime songs, it's best to understand the context of the anime or its source material. Then, try to understand the lyrics, even if you have to use an English translation that may not perfectly match the rhythm of the song. Keep this understanding in mind as you listen to the music.

They even tried to simulate some Japanese sounds in English lyrics, like at 1:45 the Original song sounds "Da remo" which they replaced in " that emo-tion" in the English version and sounds so similar!

3:21 YOSAOBI's slogan is "novel into music", especially short novels. So Aka Akasaka, the storywriter of "Oshi no ko" wrought a spinoff "45510" to provide YOASOBI a novel for making the anime OP. "45510" is a story of a 'B- komachi' member after Ai died, which is represented in this part of the song.
4:50 When played by piano, the part of the 'outer Ai' is mostly white keys, and the part of the 'inner Ai' is mostly black keys.

Also, in Japanese, rabbit is うさぎ (Usagi) which is a pun for 嘘 (uso) which means lie and 詐欺 (sagi) which means fraud (Usagi = Uso + Sagi). So her rabbit is an analogy of her lies and "fraud" of loving everyone.
Her name is also quite the pun! Her name is 星野 愛 (Ai Hoshino), and I think there are two interpretations for this name:
Interpretation 1: 星野 愛 as her want for love. If you add one i to Hoshino, it becomes hoshiino (欲しいの) which means want. Her first name Ai can be interpreted as love (愛 which is the kanji for her name). So her name might literally mean "I want love", which is basically her whole character.
Interpretation 2: 星野 愛 as a representation of her unique eyes. 星 means star, and 野 means field, meaning her last name means "field of stars". Her first name Ai can be interpreted as "eye". This represents the stars in her eyes that sets her apart from everyone else!
And to add another of those puns, there's also "your perfected Ai" where "Ai" in japanese means love, so it's also talking about the perfected, studied and fake love she shares with the fans (it's messy because English it's not my main language)

Interesting note when she says "voracious", it mirrors the conversation she has with "Aqua" at the start of the series in Episode 1, the wanting everything part, being able to be a mom and also be an idol, but as the story continues (like the song does), she talks about not just wanting to be a mom, be an idol, but also to finally say those words and mean them truly and sincerely. The song is a literal adaptation of the first episode in a LOT of ways down to the fact that the final lines of the song mirror her last words in the episode (and they are literally the last thing Ikura says in the song). I remember reading the translated Japanese lyrics after watching the music video for the first time (this was not long after I watched the first episode), when the ending hit and she says "aishiteru" (it's a phrase I'm well aware of not just from the episode but also because I watch basically all anime subbed), I was shook, after the MV ended I looked up the lyrics, and jumping down the "rabbit hole" began.
"Follow the bunnies." is all I can mention, they are placed in incredibly specific spots, like on the back of cell phones. I know that sounds vague but good grief when you start to put it all together, it's like that moment of eureka followed by this somber mortifying feeling. Hell, even the TV at the end of the music video has "Rabbit Ears". They're using the rabbit iconography as a visual form of storytelling, representing the lies not only told by Ai but also the media, it also represents show business, and usually negative emotions as when someone is checking their cellphone (yup, bunnies on the phones) it usually has to do with something negative happening (outrage online for example). Like, breaking down just this aspect would be a book report level comment and it's already getting a bit difficult to handle.
A cute note about the english lyrics, when she says "I'm in love with you" is has nearly the same amount of syllables as "ai shi te ru" and it flows nicely (given Aishiteru's literal translation is "I love you"). There's a lot of work that went into adapting the Japanese lyrics into English, just looking at the ENG lyrics side by side with the JP and it really is a sight to behold.

@@aydensuriel4022 There's a lot of double-entendre/double meaning that writers use in Japanese, a word that has two meanings or has a word contained within it is used quite often to convey multiple intentions.
The way everything lyrically lines up with the syllables to the point that some parts are the same in both versions, like “That emotion” and “Daremo ga” being so perfect just really scratched my brain just right

I think what makes this more impactful is when she genuinely says "I love you" as she jumps on Aqua and Ruby knowing how much her children meant to her.
I know it is 9months ago, but this song actually has 3 perspectives and it is about the "3 faces" in the idol industry.

another cool thing i noticed. around 4:28, the part where she says "I'm Maria", the song is referring to Ai and comparing her to Mary. Mary, mother of Jesus, had him while being a virgin kind of like Ai who had children while still being a virgin in the eyes of her fans
It also can be read as a reference to Japanese idols in real life, who generally have to keep up the appearance that they are super clean virgins. There have been actual cases of idols having secret relationships and fans going absolutely insane when that information is leaked. A lot of the story's darker themes were influenced by one of the author's friends, an entertainer who opened up to him about their experience being attacked by a fan.
POV if of the other idol girls in her group, B-komachi. Ai was the only that shined in the industry. Everyone praised and loved her. So the other girls were jealous of Ai who was more favoured and loved. All fans of B-komachi were mostly people fawning over Ai. Ai was "perfect" being that nobody else could ever copy.
I havent seen the anime but read the manga, and there was no other mention of other memebers of the group. Its nice to have their perspective.

Perfected Ai and Realest Ai could both mean Perfected Love and Realest Love as well because Ai means Love in Japanese thus adding another layer to the lyrics. Truly a high valued piece of music in the anime.
Ai also happened to be the name of the girl too
2:44 This would be the others from Ai's idol group in Bkomachi. Ai was basicly the keystone within their group that would keep everyone together. Ai made the group look so much better, sadly after Ai's death the others within the group couldn't fill up the hole that Ai left and the group got disbanded very quickly after Ai's death.

A fun little tidbit about the idols name, and a little wordplay happening here, Ai means love in Japanese! so when they're saying 'your perfected Ai' its both referring to herself and the concept of 'love' that she displays for her fans.
I can hear her accent and it’s really cute , but this is easily one of the best covers of the song and I still can’t get over the choir in the beginning and in the end
i don't think it's a cover, if i remember correctly and going off what other people are saying the person singing in japanese is the same person singing in english as i'm pretty sure both were released by Yaosobi on their channel

Oshi no ko really hits it on the head about how brutal the industry is. The lyrics also hit hard in comparison to the story as it really fleshes out Ai as a character and the meaning of her. She was a breakdown girl who just wanted to actually feel that kind of love she never had or gave. The final lines of the song then hit so much harder knowing the first episode and her as a person.
Brutal? Idols are playing a character. It's just a job. Did you not watch the last episode? You never play yourself in public.
I knew about Idols years before I watched the anime. I always knew they were acting. I appreciate the professionalism.
I always finds entertainment world is akin like fire to moths. The moths know it going to die, but comes anyway. This makes me respect and feared those entertainer...and i have 20+ years career in law, a.ka i seen things...but still compared to entertainment world.....
Yoasobi is great in terms of the way they design their songs. They are known for translating their most popular songs (such as Monster and Into The Night), but this song has got to be their best work in english yet.

3:19 is bkomachi members, theres a short story called 45510 that puts the lyrics (of the whole song tbh but mostly that part) in so much more context I'd say it's a must read
The artists displayed some amazing language skills with this English cover. It's rare that a translated song's lyrics can still sound so similar to the original. I think my favorite translation is in the chorus which replaces "Dare mo" in the original with "That emotion" just so that the sound of the syllables line up.

5:45 is such a goated ending cuz yoasobi included the last words of ai befoe she died like “ah i said it again” and “its definitely not a lie” make the song if understood correctly touching. Including the scenes too it makes it sadder cuz it kinda sets a reminder that even dead, a mother will love you.
that last key change is so spot on with the key change. the song is crazily well made.

About the POV that he was confused about, as many people have said, it's from the perspective from the other girls in B Komachi. The short story 45510 (The password to Ai's phone). The fun fact about this set of numbers is that on an old flip phone, it shows the first letter of all the initial members of B Komachi (4 = た, 5 5 = に, 1 = あ, 0 = わ). The short story is from the perspective of one of the girls talking about their complicated feelings towards Ai. She loves Ai, but also hates her. She knows she can never shine as bright as Ai and that their group wouldn't have achieved so much without her but also is envious. And yet she can't accept Ai if she's imperfect. Though they're in the same idol group, she is Ai's fan before anything else. She doesn't want Ai to not be the perfect idol that she believes her to be.
Another fun fact: in the Japanese version, it says "お星様の引き立て役 *B* です" (= Miss I'm such a star / We're serving as support to her grace) which is a wink wink nudge nudge to *B* Komachi.

The fact that YOASOBI can create an English version that sounds nearly identical to the original Japanese version is just masterful. Most language translated covers can't come even close for the most part, although I do know of a few.
This song is telling physichological side of being idol
The bitchy teasing voice is side of being idol when people worship them
The romantic sad voice is the idol as real person
The rap voice is the critique to an idol
Yasobi wraped it up into one lyric
And like always yasobi made the song like you were having fun with your friend and forgrting eberything without noticing that the song is actually depressing
They are like telling you, life is sad but let us just sing and dance
The rap part is about how the other girls + other people in the industry feel jealous of Ai's success
There are 3 povs in the song.
First her fans saying how great she is,
Second the B-Komachi members (other idols that worked with her) are saying they're jealous of how perfectly unreachable she is. In the Japanese version they say "we're just the side characters" in English "we lost the fight before it started"

The team member herself is a big fan of Ai too, thats why the front part with full admire but suddenly a strong pov with full of hate, and lastly is Ai who sud and are perfect in the eyes of her fans, trying to seek for even a bit understanding and help from the outer world, but her fans here ,the ex team member refused to ruin the perfect image of an idol. This reminds me of Outkast's "Hey ya". A truly depressing song with very upbeat music. The MV for the song even has a casket in it which most people don't notice.
Their english translations are pretty well made. They make sure to hit the same beats and sounds as the Japanese version
well, when it's the original song's creators doing the translating, that happens. they already know the context and the implied meaning behind the words.
the song really summarize the ep 1 of the anime, first time hearing the song you will think how energic and abit brightful it is but until you watch the first episode of the anime you will realize how depressing and sad it is

I'm personally in a tough situation and thought you could shine some light.
Without a doubt this is going to be a long comment but it would really help if you could bear with me.
I'm working for a japanese musician as a japanese to english translator and she asked me whether to put subtitles or to create an english version of the song.
Needless to say these two options are so different.
Subtitles can express even to the slightest of details that are scattered all over the lyrics , however, the viewer would have to stop every few seconds to read them. I'm afraid that this divides the lyrics from the melody , which should be in harmony to keep the song alive. Also , I'm a bit skeptical if non-japanese people would repeatedly listen to a song that they wouldn't understand directly. Sure they would know the general meaning but isn't it hard to remember what the subtitle said and listen to the song at the same time?
On the other hand , creating an english version would free the viewers from reading and comprehending subs while listening to the song. Viewers would be able to lean back and listen to her music just like ones in their native language. However , it's extremely hard to recreate the original song. Rhythms and meanings are always in a trade-off position. Keep the rhythm and the meaning becomes untruthful , keep the meaning and there will be unnecessary words and words paired with notes in a weird way. I don't mean to talk bad about the translator of the song "Idol" , but you may have noticed some unnecessary words placed in the english version. (e.g. "yes indeed" at 2:14 ) This is probably because the translator had to adjust the rhythm. These unavoidable things might bug people that are listening .
With the benefits and drawbacks considered , which do you thing would be the better option subbing or creating an english version ?
Oh if you need other examples of translated songs , YOASOBI has a few of them.

I still prefer Japanese versions of YOASOBI songs because generally translating songs always leads to some lost or changed meaning but I'm also more and more impressed each time I do hear the English version of any YOASOBI songs because of how much they manage to sound really similar while still being good translation without much lost meaning. "Idol" here is a great example of this but YOASOBI's been translating I think every song they've put out there and they always try to do this - make it sound as close to the original. This is really important because for most people the way the lyrics sound has a big impact on the enjoyment of a song and obviously a different language sounds way different.
The great thing about the English versions of all of YOASOBI's music videos is that they match the Japanese sounds, but also match the meaning. In most cases, it matches the sound of the end of the word. For some reason, in some places the English sounds like Japanese. Please listen and compare and find out.

Damn... I never really listened to the en version because i could pretty much understand the jp one but now listening to it made me tear up a bit. Especially being someone who read the manga. Shit this hits hard. For her the image of an idol was to be the perfect liar, telling everyone she loved them while not actually. The only truest sense of love she knew in her own way, was love for her children... However awkward it was and that abruptly ended too..

Might be a year late, but Yoasobi took inspiration for the song from the manga author's short story called "45510" that they created prior to writing Oshi No Ko that centers around one of Ai's fellow idols in B Komachi

i am very late but i am impressed how i havent see people talk about how she rhymes words, its kinda like that eminen interview where he says he can rhyme orange with a lot of words because of how he pronounces and emphasizes words, i got a lot of vibes of that from this english version, amazing work that i dont even think any english person is famous for doing.

The rabbit in Japanese society is symbolic of fertility. Idols are often girls whose adolescence is sacrificed (they lead a very cloistered life at the hands of their agencies) to occupy young men’s attentions and exploit their shyness. And in a sense they train them to love (to carry the on the race). Music is so vast and wonderous that it is easy for a musician to get lost in that expanse; but, the lyric the lyric is the layman’s gateway to the vast and amazing music that expresses it. Good reaction.

I listened to the opening before the the first episode and didn’t understand the meaning behind the lyrics, but it nearly brings me to tears.
3:18 i think the whole part is the POV of her idolgroup mates. That part doesn't make much sense, because the 1st episode didn't care about them, or their point of view, but by the lyrics it would match. It was shown, that the whole B-Komachi group wasn't really outstanding or anything, but Ai was actually the star of that group, that carried it.
1:46 this part is also cool, in the original Jap. version, it's "Dare mo...", and here it is "That emo...(tion)". It literally sounds the same, many people (including me) wrote under the Eng. version, that they got trolled thinking it's the Japanesse chorus.
yoasobi did such good job of translating the lyrics over while keeping them on beat... hearing this side by side with the original is crazy
At 2:44 the “we” someone had said that it was the other idol in Bkomachi, but I felt like at a certain lines there’s also that “toxic audiences”, the one who always point out of the imperfection of an idol to bash them. That an “idol” won’t be “forgiven” for the little imperfection they show. It pointing out all the criticism that people send to an idol just for doing the most normal thing
That dark rap part is referece for what her coworkers or other stars think of her.

As far as I know when I researching this music as well the pov being taken from Ai Hoshino idol group. I've read it somewhere there is novel for Oshi no Ko which are take pov's of said idol group and it talk about Ai and their problem with her, the said novel also become the core inspiration for Yoasobi to making the song "Idol".
I find very clever how Yoasobi makes their English lyrics to make it sound very similar to the japanese pronounciation in the JP version. 1:47 (''that emotion'' vs ''daremo'')
But I personally feel that by doing that they're sacrificing things like flow or the lyrics not sounding natural, the english sounds clunky to an english speaker. It's a problem I have with their English version of Into the night. some of the phrases there in english don't even make sense to an english speaker (it's not so bad here). Again, still impressive.
I honestly prefer some of the fan translyrics that people are creating when making their covers, the english just sounds more natural because they're not trying to sound similar to japanese. But that's me.
Yeah, same here. Like don’t get me wrong, I still like the cover and it sounds pretty good, but a few of the rhymes (like at some point she rhymed before with before) are a bit off. The grammar is a bit weird sometimes as well, but I guess that just comes with the territory of translating Japanese to English and having it be a song

Amalee just released her English translation which makes a lot more sense, especially during the rap. Seems to be from the fans perspective.
That middle section I think it's two different viewpoints, the more peppier version might be her peers that are jealous of her and their dark thoughts and then it switches to the darker thoughts of the obsessive fan who goes crazy over the fact that this perfect idol isn't perfect. This version is translated but it's still made to fit with the melody, there are more direct translations online.

this song is about the idol entertainment in japan, which is sometimes really dark, she say it a lot of times but it's all about lie, saying "idk" or something like that not to hurt fans.
You can also see 2 sides of Ai (Ai is the name of the girl, but also mean "love" in jp), 1 bright, which is the one she's showing, and 1 darker which is the one she's not showing, and more she lies, more and more these 2 sides becomes far from the other one, for example, you can see at the beginning, the 2 parts of Ai touching a nice red heart, and at the end of the music, it's the exact same heart, but a dark red broken heart, almost gray, and this time, the 2 Ai are looking at the heart dispersedly.
For me the saddest part of this song is the ending, when she say she's sure it's not a lie and the "i love you" (ai shiteiru in japanese) and then disappears, cause she's sure it's not a lie only when she's dead cause she lied all her life.
I have sooooo much to say about this song, but one thing, this group, yoasobi, are sooo good to do a happy song with super sad story.

I showed this to my mom and she threw out some info at me that even surprised me. She mentioned that there's an old test done on rabbits to tell for pregnancy, essentially once the test is done on the rabbit, if it dies it would mean you are pregnant. Suddenly the rabbit costume made so much more sense.

I hardly cried at anime deaths. Rengoku's death hit me in the chest but didn't make me cry it was more of a shock. I heard people talking about Ai's death so I already knew she would die. I didn't cry but tears almost came.
I still adore the "I am Maria" bit. It's so cheeky.
It's like... I keep wanting to spell out the joke bc I imagine ppl who don't know stuff about the idol industry wouldn't get it, but obviously if you're here then you probably already do so it just becomes me being obnoxious and wearing the joke thin from over-appreciating it.

Tony, the dark part where you asked whose POV it is, it's the POV of the other celebrities or wanna-be celebrities in the industry feeling jealous and a side-piece compared to Ai, the ultimate idol.
So... the public loves her, she acts like she loves the public, and the other girls in the industry hate her for monopolizing such a big space in the hearts and minds of the fans, not leaving any space for them. Or so it is the feeling of those jealous of Ai's success.
This jealousy didn't show up very much in the anime, so I believe it's a reference to what happens in the industry in real life, where bad feelings run rampant, and the competition is fierce between idols.
this story was supposed to be representing the dark side of the idol's story in the story her husband is killed by a crazy fan and once she gets pregnant and gives birth she is killed too. It just shows that an idol's life is far from perfect. For example, a member from Black-Pink suicide because of the negativity of the fans... Really this story was soo moving and whether we like it or not we have to respect people and idols that we reckon are 'perfect' for some privacy!!
