    I love how Kevin's conclusion was wanting to contribute personally to video game soundtracks. This is exactly how lots of composers small and big were driven to music making, be it specifically for games or in a wider sense. Amazing how game OSTs never fail to evoke this drive. Im a Warframe player since 2015, and in game, you can set the music you have running in your ship to be any number of songs from the game. For nearly 10 years now, 'This Is What You Are' has been the sole song i let play, no others. What it represents in game and how you come to the appropriate realizations and their implications is one of those "oh my god" moments you get in games. Its one thatll stick with me for a very long time.
    ALMOST as much as 'The Best Is Yet To Come' in Metal gear Solid 4.... to this day, no other moment has ever had me NEED to put the controller down and just vibe. Or in my case, be a lone 30 year old man sitting in the silence of my room, with the only sounds being the song, and a grown man weeping. That moment was a mental, emotional, and spiritual gut punch.

    Glad you both touched a bit upon why a lotta folks love Yakuza's karaoke. It's seeing which songs the characters like to sing and how they see themselves when they sing it in their favorite bar. Kiryu gets all emotional and remembers a good time or a good person in his life with Baka Mitai, and Goro Majima with 24 Hour Cinderella... well he just has fantasies of being a pop idol on rollerskates. It's an insight to the personalities of these characters who are supposedly some hardened criminals but have a far more innocent side to them. Not something a lotta crime dramas care to do.

    Artist Analysis: I enjoyed this piece as it embodies the function of chaos in that the melody is unpredictable, yet there’s an underlying structure with the simple yet consistent beat. Each note is the same length, measured yet keeping the listener in a constant state of anxiety or perhaps even panic. It makes you search for a resolution that never comes, much like life itself!

    Your conversation about music outside of context was really interesting to me because I feel almost the opposite: I find it difficult to enjoy music WITHOUT thinking about the meaning, and all of my favorite music that I listen to over and over again are pieces that tell a story to me, and I like to listen to it to bring me on that journey. There are earworms that get stuck in my head because "it's a bop," but it is still very much linked to the part of the emotional journey I feel in that part of the piece, just not moving from that place.

    • @Ms666slayer
      @Ms666slayer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Interesting comment, i do believe that in videogames the context is important for the OST, because in my opinion ofr a ost to goof it needs to fit the context of what's happening, even if the music is really good if it doesn't fit the mood, scene, emotions i don't consider that is a good soundtrack and for me the best example of that is the Marvel 2 soundtrack, the music individually is good but it doesn't fit the game in almost anything and the oppsite also occurs and for me the biggest example is Banjo Kazooie most of the songs don't work individually i will never listen to that but it fits the game perfectly so i will say that the Banjo soundtrack is really good.
      In my opinion the best soundtracks are the ones that the songs work individually but also contextually, which interestingly gacha games are the ones that are doing that the best, also some other games that i believe fit that is Stellar Blade, most of the Souls games, Nier, Final Fantasy, Persona from 3 to 5.

      I feel the same way, that while I can listen to music that is "just music for the sake of music", I find myself more thoroughly enjoying songs that have a story or meaning behind them. Songs like Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot" having a morbid but fascinating story about Politician Bud Dwyer, or Danzig's "Mother" being about the PMRC trying to censor the music industry itself. Music with an idea behind it holds a deeper spot in my mind

    • @Cofcos
      @Cofcos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If I don't know the context of a song, I make one up for myself. It's the only way I can like any modern pop. If I can't make up a way to relate to it, even fictional, I can't like it.

    • @TheJallerKnight235
      @TheJallerKnight235 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Cofcos I do the same! Every song I listen to, if I'm actually engaged in active listening, I create a mini-movie in my head of what the story of the song is. Even, and in fact ESPECIALLY, instrumental pieces. Sometimes it's what the actual intended story of the piece is, but often I struggle parse the lyrics of a song and so I get snippets and otherwise the lyrics are like just another instrument, just sounds, and I just read the "vibe" and interpret the story from there. Pop songs tend to be repetitive, so I don't usually like them because the story is just quite boring, the same story beats over and over again until something changes at the end. While with, for example, the Promised Consort, I see in my head the army of Radahn sitting in dejection, when the first murmurs of music at the beginning sound, and they're stirred from their reverie, and then I see the intro cutscene for the boss, and then a montage cutting between shots of the boss fight synced with the music, sizzle shots of Radahn, and the Redmane army gathering themselves back to their dignity and marshalling, hope filling them again. Then for the transition I see the phase transition current cut together with shots of radiant light slowly spreading over the Lands Between, and all the desiccated, ancient, hopeless people see this new light and see some glimmer of hope, and then as the second phase music builds it continues to rouse the weary, huddled masses, and the Redmanes prepare for their Lord to return once more, and we see shots of the glory to come, of Miquella's radiant kindness and love washing over those who have been unloved for so long, and it keeps building and building and at the apex - Miquella and Radahn die, cut down by the Tarnished. And the light recedes, and the people's eyes glaze over with hopelessness/apathy once more.

    I think Warframe does actually have quite a lot of story before you get to the second dream, but game players are so conditioned to think of story as plot that it gets missed here. You spend 40 hours learning about what the solar system is now, who the other people in it are and hints at the mysteries of this system in much the same way you would get it from dark souls, by thinking about what's being presented to you.
    The Second Dream is when you go from learning about the solar system to learning about the deeper parts of that system, and it is a drastic shift but also works because you spent all that time doing missions and seeing what was out there.

      Absolutely agree. Hell, even when the story is directly presented some people skip right past it if isn’t in the form of a cutscene. I’ve had friends who played games, enjoyed the game, then when talking to them about it they say something like “the game was fun but the story sucked”. Then you start asking questions to probe that statement further and you realize the only bits of the story that they paid attention to was the stuff presented in cutscenes, ignoring any dialogue or anything else. Now, I think it’s fine if you want to play a game that way, but it kinda renders your view on the story moot if you ignored and skipped past 95% of the story content presented to you😂
      That said, I think there will always be people like that with any kinda of storytelling medium. They don’t think any deeper than surface level, they don’t pay attention to the details etc, if it isn’t shoved directly in their face in the most blatant way, or spelled out explicitly, then they won’t get it.

He brought up a good point that I never really thought about before, and that was how music in-game (the way Yakuza did it) shows how music is involved in the characters life. I think it humanizes these characters and increases immersion. Great video and phenomenal guest!

It really is an amazingly beautiful piece and I'm sort of sad I didn't realize that until today. It really tugged on some heart strings that I never even consciously knew existed. This guy needs to listen to the Portal 2 soundtrack if he appreciates the Crazy Bus theme. It takes that idea of discordant avant garde chip tune and does something absolutely spectacular with it. Try "Science Is Fun" or "Reconstructing More Science".
    I see you've also reacted to Cara Mia Addio, the games sort of parody of Italian opera, but you listened to it out of context...and the context is so important for it. The game is primarily a comedy. The song is sung by the games common enemy type which are deliberately cute little AI controlled machine gun turrets. They are adorable death machines. In the plot of the game you've been trying to escape a facility controlled by an insane AI that is trying to kill you, often with these turrets. At the end of the game after deciding you are too hard to kill the AI lets you leave and the turrets are ordered to no longer shoot at you. The very end of the game is you getting stuck in a lift as it opens onto a room full of these turrets...but rather than shoot you, they start to sing.
    You laughed at it, finding it funny that this archaic style of Opera was in a video game...but I don't think you understood that that was exactly what they were going for. It's written by AI turrets that are just becoming self aware. In your reaction you referred to a book you used to learn how to sing Italian opera, and how it reminded you of a Carra Mio Belle. I don't think you realise you hit the nail on the head....that is exactly the intent...the AI is learning how to sing and write music so they've written a song about you, the player, who inspired them and it's in the style of Italian opera for beginners. That's the joke. A 16th century Italian Opera joke in a sci-fi video game. I couldn't give a better example of the brilliance of the soundtrack. It's a masterpiece.

    26:02 I think the you "glazing" part also comes partly from knowing the background and refrences from this music to other in game music themes (like the Star Scourge Radahn theme for example). I think knowing that enhances the experience and appreciation for the piece. I am also a big fan of the "Pomised Consort" music track.

  • @hansw15
    @hansw15 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    On the topic of the Promised Consort fight and the Urqopacha day theme.
    This video was honestly the first time I heard the song for that fight, because when I fought it I was 90% focused on the gameplay and just registered there was music in the background.
    For Urqopacha the theme is sometimes the main event, I have spent 5 or so hours in Urqopacha gathering materials for my crafting classes, running between 6 nodes and collecting items, it's such an automated task that all I really have to do is listen to the music.
    They are both BGM's for a game, but one is set dressing and the other is a star actor, they perform different jobs and so one feels more original and the other has to quickly convey theme without being too distracting, but can quickly feel like you heard it before.
