    Be carefull with the 23 kN test, even though it might not break there probably will be plastic deformation which might render it unusable. And yes definitely make more climbing equipment^^

    • @bajlazs
      @bajlazs ปีที่แล้ว +33

      with that cross section ( no slimmed down webbing for weight reduction) I doubt if will suffer plastic deformation , keep in mind that is steel not Al alloy. And in a closed position it will have very little if any elastic deformation.

    • @thestormcraft4012
      @thestormcraft4012 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@bajlazs exactly, if anything i think the steel will be stronger then that Al alloy, the only issue i see would be to rust since the advantage of Al alloy is it does not suffer from the same corrosion problems steel does. Another point if there are any micro tears in the steel if there is too much stress it could suffer sheering force and break that way, though i doubt that would happen since Alec is skilled at his job, still it is a potential risk when forging by hand.

    • @TheGeoffable
      @TheGeoffable ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Agreed on the 23kN in principle, although as it's a steel crab modelled on (presumably?) an aluminium one, it shouldn't have any issues. What *would* be really interesting is an NDT report from someone like Petzl, see if there's any tiny cracks/delaminations in there. That particular crab is going to be safe though, as it's vastly over-engineered in terms of the material, any fall big enough to cause concern about the crab is going to break your back anyway.
      An old style Sticht plate with spring would be a quick and easy one....seeing as Alec bottled the springs on this project ;) Big old spring, not safety critical, good starting point.

      @@bajlazs yeah when I was working on a ropes course we had steel biners that were roughly the dimensions of my aluminum ones, the aluminum were good to 23kn, but some of the steels were rated up to 60kn, really pits your customer to ease when you tell them it'll carry 2 cars and that their body is the weakest link in the system

    Very Very cool video & build. in case you are curious, the little white fossils visible at time 13:29 are mostly crinoid columnals, there's also a couple pieces might be from trilobites. crinoids are kinda like armoured sea anenomies on stalks. most of the rock clearly visible in the cave was limestone formed in ancient oceans. a couple parts looked shaley.
    i think you should save your first damascus caribiner, maybe use it to hold keys securely to a belt loop & in your pocket. & yes! it'd be cool to see you make more caving stuff.

    To test the carabiner I think you should set a line up, hook Alex to it while he is standing on a table and then make him step off the table where he runs out of rope before meeting the ground. I would recommend that he ensures all 'personal' parts are correctly arranged and secured away from the harness straps first though!

    Fantastic idea for a video and even better execution. It came out just beautifully. You have become quite the machinist! Please don’t destroy it-not only is it a gorgeous object, it’s a memento for your first caving trip!
    On a side note, as someone who studies rocks, I really appreciated the beautiful shots of Mississippian (Visean) age Crinoid Wackestone of the Monsdale Limestone and overlying Eyam Knoll Reef Limestone into which that swallet was carved. The geology of that area is quite interesting. It’s a large dome or anticline, and you were in its limestone center. Younger layers of siltstone and sandstone on top are eroded away and form sharp cuesta edges such as Stannage Edge (and Rushup Edge, north of where you were). There are a whole network of swallets (sinkhole caves for winterbourne streams) in that area, as I am sure Jamie is aware, along with some decent mineralization (the Odin ore trend is right near there) and Pleistocene fossils of rhinoceros, etc, some of which have actually been found, permineralized, within the caves.
    Also maybe this is more of a question for Jamie, but I took a look at the map of P8-did you guys make it all the way down to sump 1? I am fascinated by caving but the tight squeezes with no turning around terrify me (esp being over 195cm in height) and it looks incredibly uncomfortable to the point of misery with the combination of tightness, wetness, coldness, and darkness. However, I still enjoy reading and learning about it. I recently read a fantastic memoir by cave diver William Stone (nominal determinism at work) called “Beyond the Deep”, about his expedition into the San Agustin sump, in the Huautla cave system in Mexico, which at a depth of 1560m is one of the deepest caves in the worlds. Caving…I might try if I had the right guide and cave. But cave diving…that is another story altogether. The logistics and skill needed to plan and haul sensitive diving equipment all the way down, and then the diving skill and danger itself… Bill Stone and his associates actually had to invent new rebreathing technology in order to accomplish their expedition, and sadly several lives were lost.
    Anyway, this is all just to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

    That is a fantastically fun looking cave. There are lots of of fun caves around the UK. But they can get pretty cold. The UK caving clubs do trips to Thailand/SE Asia to explore and survey caves in the region. They are a whole different world and the water is much warmer ;) If you decide to come back to Australia, there's a lot of fun to be had underground here too.
    I wouldn't personally replace any of the alloy descender/ascender gear with steel variants, just because of the added weight. For a short trip it might be okay. But if you spend 8-14 hours under ground or have long ascents, that can really add up in terms of fatigue.
    Damascus caving knife build next please!!!

    They make rope knives. I had one with a forward sweep, like a karambit, but the edge wasn't straight. It had a sort of dull tooth edge, like an inverse serration. There were convex serrations, where the small sharp points were negative space and the tips of each serration were the rounded center of the arcs. Also, the tip was full thickness, circular, and totally dull, so there was no way to stab yourself with it. Might be useful in a cave.

    The cave they went into reminds me of some of the caves in upstate New York. Specifically the layer of crinoid stems at the top of the cave. Very similar to some limestone and dolostone layers outside Albany, NY. Then again, it isn't too much of a surprise since both cave systems were made in rock that formed in the same area ~350-400 million years ago. In fact, it was the similarities between the fossils of the North East United States and some of the fossils in England and Scotland that helped form the theory of Plate Tectonics.

    The thing about tight caves like the one they went into is that if you get injured it can be nearly impossible to rescue you

      @@geodeaholicm4889 yep, they broke many rules of caving including the requirement of wearing gloves while moving around the cave. The oils on human skin can damage the caves and the caves’ ecosystem

    Thoes fins were Ash Hiscocks but he isnt diving P8 anymore. I brought them back from sump 3 to the start of sump 1 and now they are communal rather than having to carry a set of fins most divers just use them. There is a bunch of lead stashed down there as well.

  • @teropiispala2576
    @teropiispala2576 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should be able to test it safely on rated strength. There are big safety margin at specified strength.
    By the way, if you sometimes have to make some fancy turning tool, you can make it from 4140 and then use tig welder to weld a drop of high-speed steel on cutting edge. I have done it without pre-heat and have no problems. HSS seems to harden by itself, at least when the welding time is short.
    Of course tools can be grinded from HSS bar, but it's tough work compared to making it in lathe and mill. Many times the tool can be made much thicker to compensate lower stiffness of base material.
    I have used broken HSS endmills since it seems to be the best material. Hss bars and even old drillbits works, but I don't recommend them since they are usually coated and many times they are not entirely made on hss

    Things to make... I'm thinking descender & back up devices
    Descenders:
    "Easy" Figure 8 descender
    "Hard" auto locking descender (any brand)
    Backups
    "Easy" a rope grab, e.g. rocker/locker
    "Hard" Petzl ASAP/equivalent engineering difficulty
    Side note: you're both awesome!

    Great work on the beener. Looks great. Happy you enjoyed the caving. Just as an FYI the reason steel isn't typically used is because it can rust and that can cause problems with the integrity of the material. Plus it's a little bit heavier. But with over 15 years of experience it is still a thrill to watch people enter into the climbing world. One of the best sports for the mind and body.

    I would under no circumstances trust my life with this carabiner, unless it undergoes ultrasonic and eddy current testing. Witch I highly doubt it will pass due to it being Damascus steel. Anything can hold a set amount of weight but a small discontinuity in a single layer could very easily cause a stress concentration and result in failure

    The proper way to knurl is to feed across, and at the end, stop the spindle with feed still engaged, change feed direction, and turn back on. All whilst keeping great pressure between the tool and part.

  • @paulinfrancis

    I’d make a copy of the Handy braking crab. It doesn’t see anything like the load that a regular carabiner could potentially be exposed to, so you could actually use it without being worried about it.

    I predict a lot more caving tools.
    (A diving knife could be cool too. Although to keep it stainless it'd have to be stainless steel or titanium, so unless you can work out a stainless Damascus, it'll probably have to be mono)
    Maybe Jamie could make his caving knife. Working in a blacksmith shop and not making a knife for your hobby sounds like a crime.

    Hey, I’d love to see you, make some more caving and climbing equipment
    And since this is the one off part, I don’t think it’s worth testing it higher than 10 kN Because you’re unlikely to see forces higher than 5 kN so if it survives 10 KNat super good enough
    And if you wanting to test it Street view should get a hold of the channel HowNot2 they tests caving and other climbing equipment and have a machine to test equipment to failure
    I think it would make a great collaborative video
    Apologies for the spelling and grammar I am extremely dyslexic
