Cesar Franck: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B minor, Op 11, Martijn van den Hoek

  • César Franck (1822-1890) - Piano Concerto No. 2 in B minor, Op. 11, Martijn van den Hoek (piano), Arnhem Philarmonic Orchestra, Roberto Benzi (conductor)
    “In his earlier career as a virtuoso pianist, it was natural that Franck should provide music in the expected style of the time, operatic variations and fantasies and concertos. His Deuxième Grand Concerto in B minor, Opus 11, was probably written in 1835, when Franck was thirteen, the period of the Première Grande Sonate and of the Variations brillantes sur la ronde favorite de Gustav III, among a series of virtuoso compositions for the piano. The concerto has its own interest, beyond that of an exhibition of precocity. ”

    A wonderful experience hearing this concerto
    It is well crafted and is one of my all time favorite.
    Yes,I also hear a little similarity to Hummel,especially his piano concerto in a minor which is also a favorite of mine.

    Don`t forget this: he composed this when he was 14 years old!

    • @onenightraven1978

      +DustBGD89 Really? Did he composed it or his father did?

    • @DustBGD89
      @DustBGD89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +onenightraven1978 His father was a clerk, he didn't possess any musical knowledge. Maurice Kunel found that Franck wrote some sketches for this work while on tour in Belgium. He brought it than to his Paris composition professor, Anton Reicha, who helped him with more complex aspects, such might have been orchestration and form.

      +DustBGD89 I see. Thank you for the details. What about nº1? Do you know if it has been recorded? I think it may be interesting.

    • @DustBGD89
      @DustBGD89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +onenightraven1978 Indeed, it is a good question. What I might tell you that researchers have the opinion (though unofficial) that it was never composed. It was more likely Franck's father who got the idea to name this concerto "second". That was the way to tell the world that his son composed a work of that complexity even before. Thanks to diaries, we might trace back every single day of Franck's life back in 1830s, there is not even one entry about First concerto.
      But, this is also a speculation. People will certainly continue to dig through libraries in Liege, Brussels and Paris in order to find some clue. Unfortunately, much of his manuscripts were destroyed in world wars.

    È un concerto di notevole spessore, ben scritto specie in rapporto all'età, con passi di notevole virtuosità e con le idee musicali assai ben distribuite, in modo da tener desta l' attenzione. Ma parlare di " perfezione" è eccessivo perché la qualità di queste idee non è eccelsa, dappertutto si respira la sensazione di aver già sentito qualcosa del genere, come se la partitura fosse genialmente un patchwork di passi fatti alla maniera di.... Imitando e non reinterpretando....

But you don't have to be sad, we can't know all the composers, especially since Mozart and Beethoven, possibly Brahms or Mendelssohn, are constantly performed in concert halls.
