- César Franck (1822 - 1890)
Prélude, Fugue, et Variation for organ in B minor, Op. 18, FWV 30 (1862), arranged for piano by Bauer
Nikolai Lugansky, 2019
Moscow Philharmonic Society
[0:00] Prélude - I. Antandino cantabile
[3:30] II. Lento
[4:20] Fugue - III. Allegretto ma non troppo
[7:32] Variation - IV. Andantino
“… Coming as it does directly after Franck’s Grande Pièce Symphonique, Op 17, its title might suggest a contrasting work of neo-Baroque severity, but what could be more Romantic than the haunting oboe melody of the first movement? A typical Franckian theme, moving largely by step and emphasizing particular notes of the scale, it has two limbs, the first a flowing theme of five-bar phrases, the second a dogged affair ascending the scale in four-bar phrases (and taken up in quasi-canonic fashion by the pedals). A short bridge passage introduces the second movement, a sober fugue on a subject, vocal in character, marked cantando. Assisted by stretti, a muted climax is reached, and the music proceeds without a break to the Variation, in which the hautbois, taking the stage again, has the ‘flowing’ and ‘dogged’ themes of the first movement, but here set against rippling semiquavers.”

Danke an alle Beteiligten!
Magnifica obra y extraordinaria interpretacion del Gran Maestro Nicolai Lugansky!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Une pure élégance
The sound, Oh my God. What a tenderness. Mesmerizing performance
One of the best performances of this wonderful piece. Thank you!
I fell completely in love with this piece and the way he plays it. So beautiful.
i think Franck himself was in love when he wrote this.
Litteraly heard him play it live today and so I wanted to listen to it again !
I would easily spend all my time listening to Cesar Franck. His style is so special!
Me too.. I also love playing his music..!! So deep...
Me too, I believe I understand what you want to say and what you feel.
Nikolai is perfect in Franck
Beautiful piece
Resonating performance
Thrilled to see his play in May
Melancholy of Poulenc combined with Profundity of Brahms.. Beauty beyond this world...
John Williams used this melody for Minority Report.
You know I just found this piece and I'm falling in love with it almost as much as I do with Brahms, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who hears the parallels. For a Francophone composer who studied in Paris, there is a lot of German qualities in his music. This interpretation is also marvelous
Albert S on which track?
Don't forget Bach. This piece always had a wonderful way of sounding so ancient.
True!

Bravissimo !
I am researching to write a piece on André Gide for a British Council 'Cities of Literature' commission. Gide loved and learnt to play this. I have listened to many versions here on TH-cam but this one captures the mood of how I imagine Gide playing this on piano. This version sounds the notes quite separately, with less Romanticism in the chords, I feel that this, slightly more Baroque rendition, would have been close to Gide's preferences.
Delicate, intimate, passionate and expressive!!! I absolutely adore this performance ❤️ going back to practice...... Shh...
Perfect....
What a performance.
Thank you.
@Enchanted Wanderer: Thank you for this. I have post part of it on Face Book because this wild world needs this lovely sound played by N. Lugansky. I hope you don't mind. 🙏🌷💙 (Netherlands)
By all means! :-)
@@EnchantedWanderer done ! Thank you !
Pure happiness, sad delight. ❤
Gorgeous performance of an extraordinarily haunting work. Amazing!!!
What a wonderful piece! He plays it beautifully!
My great-grandfather studied for César Franck in Paris in the 1880s..
I wrote a PhD on Franck. May I ask who your great-grandfather was?

Juste incroyable.
Absolutely a great piece
Very fine performance of this haunting masterpiece.
That was very beautiful. You’re playing is so smooth and flexible, especially in the variation movement.
Great ! Beautiful piece. smashing performance.
frickimg fantastic staff!!!! made me cry
What a beautiful piece, at the organ, like at the piano ! I am almost astonished that César Franck did not transcribe it himself for the piano, he was pianist too.
He actually may have. This piece exists in three versions, the original organ solo, this piano solo, and an organ/piano duo. The title is a bit misleading, as Lugansky did not transcribe this for piano, as I've heard this exact transcription performed by legends of the past.
@@erika6651 Thank you for your clarifications.
@@erika6651 Franck arranged his original piece as a duo for piano and harmonium. In the early 1900s pianist Harold Bauer (1873-1951) transcribed it for piano solo very effectively, so much that this version is arguably better-known and more often performed than the original, and to my knowledge has not been supplanted by some other solo piano transcription of the piece. This is surely the version you have heard before and performed beautifully here by Lugansky.
Mijn favoriete uitvoering!
One Cesar Franck's listener experience : one feels as if all his internal organs have vanished, to be replaced by the sea. Incredibly delicious or painful, it depends...
All the three....
Apaixonante ♥️😍♥️🌷👍👏
It is a little known fact that Franck's famous "Prelude, Fugue et Variation, Op.18", was originally written for harmonium & piano duo (1862). Franck then transcribed it for organ, and it was later re-transcribed for solo piano.
Beautiful
Bellissima
Bravo!
I like this performance!nice!
There is no words to express the pain and the emotion that cesar franck comunicate through this masterpiece
Muchas gracias
Bravo maestro!
😥♥️🙏
I love you

This is the same melody as Chopin's Sonate n2 1st movement, played very slowly 😮
how do you play the fugue so fast?!? i am learning this piece right now haha
@@yevheniia_r oh I have moved on to another piece now but I actually got the fugue up to this tempo! The variation was a little tricky but still fun :)
@@yevheniia_r I have been playing for about 5 years but I haven't had the chance to do any recitals or competitions. Before this piece my teacher had me play some beethoven sonatas and now I am working on a mozart sonata because I need to fix some technique issues.

For me Paul Crossley has the right cadence in this piece.
No...
❤️🫂🙋♂️
May God - Allah - the great reward, bless and protect him…!
Perfect rendition!
I still prefer the original (organ): the piano arrangement is a bit too sentimental for my taste.
