Louis Spohr: Symphony No.1 Op.20, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
Louis Spohr - Symphony No.1 Op. 20, in E Flat Major, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
I. Adagio - Allegro - 00:00
II. Larghetto con moto - 11:52
III. Scherzo: Allegro - 16:33
IV. Finale: Allegretto - 24:05
Louis Spohr (5 April 1784 - 22 October 1859), baptized Ludewig Spohr (his family called him by the name of Luis), later often in the modern German form of the name Ludwig, was a German composer, violinist and conductor.
Spohr received his first violin from his father in 1789, and - with no instruction at first - he attempted to play the melodies he heard. Eventually, he began taking his first lessons with Johann Andreas Riemenschneider, the principal of the school in Seseen, and Spohr soon began to take part in evening musical activities with the Spohr.
When he came of age, Spohr went to Brunswick, where he took violin lessons with Kammermusicus Gottfried Kunisch (1764- 1808). He also studied music theory with the organist Karl Augustus Hartung (1733-1800) - the only formal theory training Spohr ever received.
In 1805, Spohr obtained a position as concertmaster at the court of Gotha, where he stayed until 1812. Spohr later worked as conductor at the Theater an der Wien (1813-1815), where he was on friendly terms with Beethoven; subsequently he was opera director at Frankfurt (1817-1819). Spohr's longest period of employment, from 1822 until his death in Kassel, was as the director of music at the recently succeeded William II, Elector of Hesse's court of Kassel, a position offered him on the suggestion of Carl Maria von Weber.
In 1857 he was pensioned off, much against his own wish, and in the winter of the same year he broke his arm, an accident which put an end to his violin playing.
“As a composer, Spohr produced more than 150 works with opus numbers, in addition to a number of nearly 140 works without such numbers. He wrote music in all genres. His nine symphonies (a tenth was completed, but withdrawn). Between 1803 and 1844 Spohr wrote more violin concertos than any other composer of the time, eighteen in all, including works left unpublished at his death. There are two double-violin concertos, four clarinet concertos, 36 string quartets, as well as four double quartets for two string quartets. He also wrote an assortment of other quartets, duos, trios, quintets and sextets, an octet and a nonet, works for solo violin and for solo harp, and works for violin and harp.
Between 1820 and 1835, Spohr’s works were viewed by many as perfect representations of modern art. Widely admired and famous during his lifetime, Spohr’s works were ranked among the masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, Weber, Haydn, and Beethoven. In most of his compositions, Spohr followed the traditional ‘rules,’ of harmony, although occasionally he would ‘break’ them in order to achieve musical expression. “Also characteristic of his music is its thorough craftsmanship” (Weyer 1980). His music contained the qualities of sensitivity and sorrow, as well as “an aversion to popular effects” (ibid.). His emotional compositions could bring the listener into a state of great ecstasy or stimulate tears (Ciliberti 2001).” (by Stephanie Lynnette Vogler San Marcos, Texas)
“Spohr attempted his first symphony in 1811 at the suggestion of Georg Friedrich Bischoff (Symphony No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 20), and as Clive Brown and others have noted (including the present liner-note writer, Bert Hagels) the composer used Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K543, as something of a model. The general outlines of Spohr's movements, such as their time signatures and sentiments, can be traced to Mozart's 1788 work. Yet far from being a slavish imitator, Spohr in fact infuses Mozartean forms and themes with his own formidable contrapuntal and thematic designs, a procedure characterized by the late Charles Rosen as 'classicizing'; such works were 'based on the exterior models, the results of the classical impulse, and not upon the impulse itself'” (from an article published online by Cambridge University Press)

Espectacular
A magnificent performance by conductor and orchestra of this very pleasing and entertaining Wranitzky symphony. Thank you !
An absolute stunning performance of this wonderful and thrilling Locatelli concerto. Thank you !
Apparently Vanhal freelanced and there is considerable commentary about his weird early symphonies in minor keys
Fantastic, Amazing, Beautiful

Oh Schubert !!! ❤❤❤❤❤
¡ Muchas gracias !
Thanks for listening!
Mi version favorita!!!
Another late Romantic gem reserected from oblivium via Utube upload. Wonderful enjoyable unfamiliar music. Many thanks for uploading 😊

Many thanks!
Absolutely amazing 😊 Paganini played with the violin while he played it
Great performance by Howard Shelley of this irresistible delightful concerto. Excellent sound quality, a magnificent recording. Many thanks !.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! This is one of the first concerts I posted on my channel because at that time I was listening to a lot of Hummel music. Some confusion surrounds this Concerto in A major, which Hummel seems to have reworked several times during his lifetime. As a result, there are other recordings slightly modified nowadays of this concerto, but identified as WoO24a S4, sometimes as S5.
@@sibarit101 Thank you for the information. I've read in some comment you wanted to stop with posting in the beginning, luckily for your subscribers you didn't !
@@fransmeersman2334Thanks again! Yes, it was like that in the beginning, but I had to respect the 247 subscribers I had at that time.... 🙂 I wish you all the best!
Thank you! I agree with you, Pleyel's music is great. There is the "Pleyel Edition" (series) - about 20 CDs released by the ARS Produktion label, and many other recordings by other labels.
Thank you so much for posting it.
Thank you too!
Thanks very very much

Let's be glad that there are recordings and we can listen to the music of these unfairly forgotten composers, at least here on TH-cam! So thanks for listening!
Can there be music more beautiful than Schubert's and in the interpretation of the best among the best! Radu Lupu!!!
This is my favourite piece for guitar. How superb and funny with the very much folklore Polonaise. Awkwardly wonderful and played EXACTLY how it is supposed to be played. I have listened to this many many times, thanks so much for the upload, this piece can instantly transform any bad mood into joy and laughter.
Thank you very much for your nice comment! I accessed your channel and listened to your last post. Your voice and song moved me! You're great!

Why oh why are these composers rarely if ever played to the wider public.
Yet another composer to add to my ever expanding list
Thank you!
Thanks for listening!
I was surprised to see that this version is totally different from the much shorter one usually played.
What does "usually played" mean? Please can you give me an example (guitarist and conductor)?
I really like Röntgen's style! Thank you for posting this wonderful piano concerto - which in my honest opinion should be heard in concert halls and radio stations all over the world!
Many thanks for listening and for appreciating the music of this composer.
What a delicious symphony ! I remember vividly the melodies of the second and third movement. I heard them on our simple radio when I was a child, they were very popular. Where is the time. As always a big thank you !
Thanks again! I agree with you: his wonderful and mesmerizing music touches your heart and soul at any age, and changes your mood too.
Superb!!!!
Thanks for listening!

Lento no. Larghetto si.
Very good little known czech composer. Well worth exploring. A number of CDs of him available.
Thank you! I agree with you, he was a very talented composer.
I could recently listen to Dusik's beautiful piano sonatas. So thank you for this magnificent performance of one of his excellent piano concertos.
Thank you too! I agree, his compositions are wonderful!
BRAVO!!! Gracias por compartirlo!!!
Thank you too!
I've seen 'em all, worldwide, Paris&Vienna&SirAl&SymphHall&Carnegie&Davies. Zacharias and Pollini share first prize, for perfection. There is joy, in that auditorium. And Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto is the single greatest piece of music composed anywhere, anytime, in human history. Franz Schubert, another Zacharias special, is a close second. Play this at my funeral.
Many thanks!
