The power socket is actually a 3-pin Swiss standard. If you have a 2-pin device such as a telephone charger you can use it but for a grounded "Schuko" plug you need an adapter.

I did the trip from Chur to Tirano via St Moritz in last winter with the regional trains. These trains are nearly empty. We had a whole carriage for our own, and every window could be opened. Used a SBB day ticket for 50€ which gives you maximum flexibility. It was an amazing experience that I can highly recommend to everyone.

I did it in june 2022, lical trains + one technically being Bernina Express service but not in panoramic car. They weren't that empty, but not crowded aEither. I was actually doing it on Interrail.

    • @fabswisss
      @fabswisss 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

If the trains are empty at certain times, it's simply because there is no interruption to traffic at off-peak times. For example, if you made the journey you're talking about in the morning or in the middle of the afternoon, it's normal for the train to be empty because in the morning the flow of passengers is in the opposite direction and in the middle of the afternoon there are always very few passengers. As labour is expensive in Switzerland and the operating cost of a wagon is practically zero, it's cheaper to let trains run with as many wagons as possible at all times than to pay shunters to add and remove wagons according to passenger numbers. What's more, in Switzerland, line profitability is calculated on the basis of average ridership over a day, not on the basis of individual train ridership.
The average train occupancy rate in Switzerland is 60%. But that's an average. At certain times, it's over 100% (people travel standing up), and at other times it's barely over 10%.

I love Switzerland! I just got back from a week at Interlaken touring the Jungfrau Valley by train and boat. Swiss trains are great, but unfortunately got to ride far more of them than planned.
Nevertheless, I took trains from Gare de Lyon to Interlaken( a nightmare because of a train intervention), from Interlaken to Aix en Provence(four trains - no direct route; they've got to fix that.),and finally Aix to Paris. The highlight was taking the Golden Pass Express from Interlaken to Montreux traveling to Aix, where I spent another week. I still plan to take both Glacier and Bernina Expresses because of their destinations, but agree that the Chur - St. Moritz train is a great alternative. And the Swiss are the most sociable of people. As always, thanks for the ride.

Grest stuff. I was in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. We bought a one day pass for CHF49 that covered trains, trams, buses and even boats throughout the country - great value. We used it to travel from our base in Schaffhausen (on the German border north of Zurich) to Lugano on the southern border with Italy, via Ziurich, Arthe-Goldau and Bellinzona and it was a lovely ride through stunning scenery. On the way back we got off at Fluelen and enjoyed a lake cruise up to Lucerne (nearly three hours) then a train home through Zug and Zurich. Had we the time, we could have used the same ticket on three or four cog railways around Luzern too - but that's for another trip! I LOVE the place and would move there in a heartbeat if I could afford it!

This is exactly what we did earlier this year. We used 1st class interrail for seniors and didn't bother with reservations. The Glacier Express has the temerity to charge 50 SFR just for a seat reservation and is compulsory for everyone.

I did that on the Bernina as you're only paying extra for the panoramic windows anyway. I did splash the €40 reservation fee for the full Glacier in 1st though. If going in the warmer seasons, there's a lovely campsite between Punt Muragl and Punt Muragl Staz stations. It's great, as Punt Muragl Staz is a request stop for the Bernina 🙂
Had a first class Interrail, well worth it even if you are older, like myself.

Did Tirano to St Moritz and back in August, local train on way out but went Bernina Panoramic on way back a a treat (used first class Interrail as well) and yes best for local trains with those windows. First class on local train was full until guard started checking tickets and ended with me as last ticket and said with a smile 'enjoy the carriage to yourself'
Got off at Ospizio Bernina on way and back to Alp Grum for an hour and a couple of inexpensive for Switzerland beers.

I took the regional trains from Zermatt to Chur in the spring, a fantastic experience. In some ways better than the Expresses because we had a carriage to ourself most of the way and we could get off for a bit in the towns along the way.

Note that on the Bernina express and Glacier express you can only use the normal first and second class cars with an interrail without reservation.
On the panoramic cars a reservation is manatory.

I did the Bernina and Glacier expresses as part of a package holiday so we rode the actual tourist trains but still brilliant. The zig zag down the southern side of the alps towards Poschiavo. Was, if anything more spectacular then the spirals leading to St. Moritz. We didn't go all the way to Tirano but got off at Poschiavo which gave time for lunch. We then rode back to St. Moritz, then to Chur on regular service trains. The holiday package included Swiss Rail Pass which enabled us to enjoy several other spectacular routes in this part of Switzerland. We were there in winter and it was fabulous.

About children 6-16: you can also get a family card for CHF30 per year and the children will ride for free if they are accompanied by a parent with a ticket. There is also a version if you're travelling with a child that is not your own, albeit only one child per adult, if I remember correctly. Also CHF30 a year.
Not sure if you need a Swiss Pass card for that, but staff at the counter will help you.
Edit: the one for visitors is called "Swiss Family Card" and doesn't require a SwissPass-card, but does require that the parent has either a Swiss Travel Pass or half-fare card
