In 1981, I took a sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. It was my first trip to the UK. I will never forget waking up on the train at dawn and looking out the window at my first glimpse of Scotland. It was magical.
I rode the Caledonian Sleeper from Fort William to London in May 2018. The equipment in this video is a big improvement over my train which was running way past its expiration date. I love the design of the new diner lounge burt I'm not sure how comfortable those low back stools are. Thanks for taking me on a free ride through the breathtaking Scottish Highlands again.
I was on this trip! You can see me in the club car and I was sitting across from the guys for breakfast. I thought they were filming something from you tube. Really chuffed you captured my first solo adventure. Thank you so much. Absolutely gutted that the man in seat 61 was in the same lounge and train and I missed him. I've gained so much info and knowledge watching his stuff and using his website. Just knowing he was there and doing the same trip would have been amazing.
@NonstopEurotrip The Caledonian sleeper was on my bucket list and I must admit the whole trip was amazing. That blanket of snow made the journey magical while exploring Fort William and Mallaig etc. After seeing this video I realised I've seen lots of your and Pauls other stuff. Thank you for what you do. Its great to get inspiration from these videos.
My only trip on the equivalent to this train was in 1971! A mark ! compartment coach with the old bouncy seats. Some of us tried to sleep in the luggage racks, which promptly gave way! It took forever and we we deposited at Corrour with a two day hike to Fort William plus climbing Ben Nevis. Unforgetable, especially the midges!
😂😂😂 o dear sleeping 😴 on the luggage racks, if they were smart phones like now back then, it would be fun to watch that trip. I have only had one horrible experience long journey that felt like it will last forever and ever, my mum, and my daughter slept through the journey and and afew of other passengers
Excellent as always. Reviews are a bit mixed for the Caledonian sleeper service so yours was a delight to see, it being so good. We miss the weekly vlogs so good to see this one. Next time I’m sure you will introduce it with yourself in the frame.
We rode the Caledonian Sleeper from London to Fort William in October 2023. As family with two kids we booked 2 club rooms. And I never forget it! For me it's the best sleeper train in Europe. On second place will be the sleeper trains in Finland.
I recall doing the sleeper service from Euston to Stirling in March 1983. Back then you could also take your car which went in a truck at the rear of the train. I don’t recall getting much sleep in my bunk or much food on board. I think there was a wake up call and a cup of tea and off the train at about 6am in Stirling. Then a short wait while my car was off loaded. I then found a hotel for some breakfast and was travelling on to Glencoe for a week of skiing. Not a good skiing experience as facilities were very primitive back then.
That's the Motorail service that ended in 1995, which is a shame because you can no longer conveniently bring your own car with you when travelling along the routes.
I did this journey in reverse in May last year, in a Club Room. I agree with everything in this report as I found it very comfortable with good food and great service. The train arrived at London Euston early, from memory about 15-20 minutes.
I can vouch for the seating to be extremely uncomfortable. They dont tell you till you have PAID that you have to vacate the train at Edinburgh at 03:30 and stand around in the cold whilst the train is shunted around!! I went in October this year. The toilets were blocked and filling the corridor with you know what. Never again.
@@bestrazerthere was going to be an international sleeper service through the tunnel. The coaches were built and ready to go but the service never started. The stock was sold to ViaRail in Canada and put to work on The Ocean, the 22 hour train between Halifax and Montreal. I believe they are still in service on that route.
9:00 I recently looked at doing Glasgow-London the classic room. With a railcard they wanted £170 roughly. Boarding in Aberdeen ? Only £120 Needless to say, I booked from Aberdeen 21:25 Virtually all routes and all accommodation types (yes I've done seated). You never know what you'll get on the Caledonian Sleeper- I've had it all from faultless to ending up stranded 600 miles away .
Those "interconnecting doors" . . . just as in hotel rooms, are a SCOURGE. For the very odd time they are used (I would guess, on the train, almost NEVER!), the rest of the time they eradicate a privacy barrier that is highly desirable. Even if travelling as a "party" it's hardly a major thing to use the corridor to get from cabin A to cabin B.
I have done all the portions of this service, when it was the previous stock, both Mk1, and Mk.3s..I do want to give these a try, as I have heard a lot of negative comments since their introduction..your trip shows what can be achieved..and is good to inspire people to do the trip..my only gripe about this service is the cost..I feel it is over-priced for a decent cabin, and the food is more over-priced for the measly portions you get..I have had meals on this service to F.W. but it was reasonably priced on the Mk3s..Those ridiculous seats with low backs, I expect will not be comfortable, probably digging into the base of your back, due to the motion of the train, the WH line has a lot of curves. the seats looks nice, but like a lot of seat design these days, comfort does not seem to be a priority...I am thinking of doing the seating one way..the try a cabin on a second trip..thank you for an insight into the journey..always good to see a passengers experience..
Team building outing??? My only Anglo-Scottish sleeper trip was Edinburgh-London in the mid 1980s, no plans to repeat given the prices - even with an old codgers railcard. Looking forward to my Budapest-Stuttgart sleeper in March though.
