    Beautiful train and service - yes, and also the landscape!
    I was increasingly mesmerized with the tiny details around the seat, like how milimetrically the folding table was designed to achieve maximum size, the different power sockets, individual tablets with an app showing the current location, food presentation, gosh!
    It's a hefty price, but it seems an excellent money for value ratio, for sure.

      No train journey of this length will ever not be overpriced to me at 800 Euros, but the great thing about the Swiss is that they'll do their darndest to try and change my mind. When transport, hotels or any other service is expensive AND terrible, as it often is in America, I am far more hacked off by that combined problem than the sum of its parts.

    Zermatt for skiing is a top one in the world. During my business trip to Zurich I took 2 days off from corpo and went to Zermatt by train. I reserved a student hostel with a very good price and spent all day skiing in June. I was there with only 2 other skiers. Greetings from Poland.

    Thank you for an honest video without narration, music or drama.
    It could be a memorable journey, like many others, but depending on your point of view, it's either good or not so good. Stunning scenery and fabulous food is good, having to spend time in the company of fellow travellers with irritating habits is not so good. It's always worth considering your point of view before committing. 8:52

      agree on being stuck around inconsiderate people - but at 800$ a head, i'd think that would weed out those people. one thing that i did notice on this trip video was how you could hear everyone talking - if kids get loud or there are older people who are "loud talkers" - that could also be very annoying........you make a good point.

      I could barely sit through an hour for Church Mass as a kid. And I know I excelled at it as opposed to all the other kids. Now put a kid on a 7+ hour train trip. I think inconsiderate is not even the right word. Earplugs always recommended when commuting. Especially on this tour.

      @@albert8997 To relax and see one of the most beautiful countrysides in the world? Sure. Flying the same distance in the USA between states could easily cost you the same (e.g. First class on Delta from houston texas to LA, California), you would be tied to an airplane seat, crappy food and unable to stretch your legs. Let's not mention what is there to see at 30,000 feet? Not much. Conlusion of the matter: 800 USD for a premium luxury train ride across the Swiss landscape is a no brainer.

    • @jeanmarteau7729
      @jeanmarteau7729 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@JuniorShepherd It depends, 800$ might not be as much money in the States as it is in most of Europe, it is certainly a lot in western Europe. I took a similar train from Andermatt standard class, also in the Alps, and it was around 70$. The train was nice and the seats comfortable, same views as the luxury class :D. It depends on each individuals' economical situation. I remember spending over 700$ back in 2015 in just 3 days in food and drinks and I didn't even pay for the accommodation.

    Yes, I also believe that a trip with such a view, and for such a ticket price, should be in silence and comfort, not with the squeaking of other people's children.
    I'm sure that cultured parents, of any nationality, would have told their children to keep their voices down.
    But I also believe that railway workers could do the same.

    The most nerve racking experience I've had in mountain ranges was, after hiking for 8 days on the Haute route, from Chamonix to somewhere in Switzerland, I was descending the mountain roads in a small bus. Heart was in my mouth for a big part of the journey looking over the steep edges of those roads. Although the driver obviously knew how to handle the roads, things felt much safer when I was on my own two feet; my fear reactions to looking over the edge of roads was a complete surprise to me. I'd love to take this train ride, but would probably have my eyes shut at this point of the journey 00:35 😆
    Anyway, it's an understatement to say that this whole area is 'stunning', really messed with my ideas of what this planet we live on is like.

    I took the Glacier Express the day after riding the Bernina Express to Tirano Italy and back and the Glacier Epxress, while nice because I love all Swiss trains it was disappointing and for a very good reason. The Bernina express spirals through mountainsides in tunnels and has jaw dropping accents and descents still today. However the Glacier Express did at one time earn the title of Glacier Express when it went up and over through an icy wonderland. Since then they improved it with a long tunnel to go through the most impressive peak and while it makes excellent sense transportation wise. As a wonder of Switzerland it is knocked down a few notches.
    Much like if San Francisco were to replace their cable cars with electric self driving trollies that are better in every way. All the magic and uniqueness of what a Cable Car is thought to be seems gone. To be clear, I would not hesitate to go on the Glacier Express again but anyone travelling to Switzerland for the first time or who need to economize or choose what to do and not to do need to know this so they can make up their own mind. ITs still a great trip.

      You mean when it went up the Furka pass? You can still take the steam heritage train over the pass. The Glacier Express is clearly overpriced and takes too long, better to spend the money on shorter but even more amazing train journeys, like from Zermatt to Gornergrat or from Lauterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch.

    • @guidedmeditation2396
      @guidedmeditation2396 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great idea. And I love steam trains. There is nothing wrong with the Glacier Express it just isn't what I expected and as you mentioned it is expensive. BTW the Jungfrau is also very expensive especially when you get to the top and it is all fogged/clouded with no view. Thats nature and the luck of the draw I guess but something to consider for a person only there for a day and they can see its cloudy. Its like flying to Paris but not leaving the airport. @@wyqtor

    During the summer it is possible to travel with trains hauled by rack-and-pinion steam locomotives along the Furka summit line, along which the GLACIER EXPRESS traveled before the opening of the Furka base tunnel to traffic. The company is called DFB (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke) which is the anagram of the acronym of the company BFD (Brig - Furka - Disentis) which initially managed the railway which was then sold to the FO company (Furka Oberalp)

    The scenery is beautiful and the train has large windows to take it all in. Shame about all that screechy noise from the tracks though.
    The design of the car can feel a little bit too open and the other guests feel a bit too close for comfort. It can get noisy in the cabin, especially with kids onboard.
    A bit more soundproofing and interesting design on the car for ex plants or curtains would go a long way.

    En Belgique, il y a une brasserie sur la digue un espace interdit aux enfants de moins de 12 ans afin de laisser sa clientèle manger sereinement. Le restaurateur a assumé son choix avec vigueur et avançait même à la télévision locale que les enfants ne se comportent pas aussi bien que par le passé, qu’ils ne respectent ni le matériel, ni les tables avoisinantes. Une décision qui a largement fait réagir, mais qui s'avère être un succès pour ce restaurateur, qui n'a jamais regretté sa décision.

    Now THIS is how you travel by train! Super lux and the food and drinks look fabulous. Well worth the price. Only things I would change is this compartment should be adults only (no loud kids to ruin the amazing journey), and the wine selection appears to be Swiss. No offence but would much rather have French wines to choose from than crappy Blau and Spatburgunders (although I did see a Laurent-Perrier Champagne). For $800 one would expect a more curated wine list. Food looks amazing.

    Due to the damage to the railroad system in the Mattertal valley, the continuous line between Visp and Täsch below Zermatt remains closed until at least August 25. All Glacier Express trains will run exclusively between St. Moritz and Brig until the line is opened. On the route between St. Moritz and Brig the normal services are available and the departure and arrival times for all stops will remain as per the timetable.
    For Glacier Express travelers from/to Zermatt, an appropriate alternative transport service is in operation in an extra train from Zermatt to Täsch and separate buses between Täsch and Brig. Guests affected will be informed directly by Railservice Glacier Express as soon as possible.
    For departures from Zermatt, we recommend that you arrive at Zermatt station half an hour before the regular departure time. Our staff will then meet you there. Optionally, you can also board the train directly in Brig. Please refer to the timetable for departure times.
    If you have already booked for the time in question and decide not to take the Glacier Express journey as planned please contact our customer service directly.
