  • Welcome to another beekeeping tutorial.
Today we inspect two hives that are both horizontal.
First, we follow up on the Layens Hive, and second we look into the Long Langstroth.
They are both at near capacity and will run out of room very soon.
The camera used is in motion as we move fairly quickly through the hives.
The Long Langstroth was built right here. The Layens was purchased at full price from HorizontalHive.com
Long Langstroth LATCHES I use can be found here on Amazon (this is an affiliate link)

Because the Layens hive has only 20 frames and they are nearly all filled, I will be buying in another 20 frame Layens very soon. Layens frames are not compatible with any other hive configuration. I always need at least two hives so that resources can be shared back and forth.
The Long Langstroth is also nearing it's capacity and will also be split soon. The good news is that all Langstroth hives are compatible when it comes to the frame size. This makes Langstroth management much easier.
Thanks for the extremely fancy hive tools ‪@TheHoneystead‬ they have the best finish I've ever found anywhere. Wishing you all the best!
Both hives are performing extremely well and this promises to be a very good beekeeping year.

** I have not followed all of the recommendations, for example I do not use multiple entrances (one entrance only) and I have closed up all hive-top venting. This is why, even with no queen excluder, the bees organize their brood near the entrance and progress to nothing but honey as you progress deeper into the horizontal hive. This will also facilitate removing honey for harvesting with no brood present. **
Hive entrances face south by southeast for winter warmth, and are 18" from the ground which keeps them out of skunk reach.
