- It’s been a few weeks since we caught the swarm and placed it inside our new langstroth long hive! This hive was such a wonderful gift from a viewer and we are so excited to share an update on how they are doing!!

I went ahead and moved the divider, gave them a few more frames, and closed off the other entrance until the colony grows a bit larger!! My camera really overheated and I was unable to show you all this part!!!! Happy keeping my friends!

To avoid flattening Bee's my grandpa told me to place the board down lightly and jiggle a bit and any Bee's under will move before getting squished.

Because of you and JP and Yappy, I see queens so quickly in videos. And because of your channels I am no longer afraid of honey bees. I am still allergic to stings, but a few weeks ago a honey bee was asleep on my toe and later was walking on my hand and arm. I got video of it. I have finally got to the point in my life that I have a peaceful frequency so I can coexist with bees.
Great job to all of you and your colleagues.

omg same! now whenever I see/hear bees I’m like “aw hey” and just be aware not to like disturb them and not step on them (at school waiting for the buses to come I’ll sometimes see a couple since there are weeds and flowers around in the grass) so now my reaction is to be calm and I actually get happier when I see bees
Do it. I was very afraid of bees, but we decided to start keeping them and now I'm not afraid at all. I have a healthy respect for them and understand why they decide to sting. I love those little creatures now.
Hi Bethahy from Australia, Yes K is a Queen of bee's and if you have some $'s or looking to learn have a look at th-cam.com/video/FgFb0xxHYcA/w-d-xo.html, They have an online coarse (I think its free). Their hives are costly but you don't need to pull the frames to get the honey or have extraction equipment. Maybe JP the Bee Man, Mr ED and Dirt Rooster might help you. Nice to see someone else's long lang. Mine was made by Brushy Mtn and I'm not so thrilled with it because I can't use typical entrance reducers with mine. To stop the bees from building burr comb on top of the frames, I laid a piece of canvas over the tops of the frames and under the feeder boards. The bees propolize it but its easy to peel back to do an inspection. To move the divider and add some frames, all I need to do is peel the canvas back just that much. That way the whole rest of the colony isn't disturbed. I really like a well made horizontal hive. I'd like to build myself a Layen's style horizontal hive. Those look to be the bomdiggity.

They're 'the girls' because the boys don't do any of the work! That's excellent brood. What an amazing queen. The burr comb under the frame at 9 mins 10 looks a bit like a swarm cell from way over here. But the mood of the girls is so calm I don't think they're in any mood to swarm any time soon. You did so well to catch them in the bucket

looks like perhaps a queen cell on the same frame as you found the queen on. opposite side from where you found the queen. ~12:08 does it also seem like her entourage are running her around?

The sour wood are starting to bloom here. My wildflower honey is really light in color this year. I will be extracting in a few weeks.

@@TheHoneystead ya, I did most of the video in one long take and the camera shutdown from overheating and the file was corrupted. Had to trash the entire video. I usually stop recording multiple times, just didn't that time and it bit me. Live and learn, right?
Hi, I made a langstroth hive box but have few questions, hope you can help me.
1. Is it a must you must have 10 or more frames when you start to use it? Can't you start with just 5 frames?
2. To make it less heavier, can I reduce the width and/or length of the box?
3. Can I start the box only with the brood chamber first and add the honey super later when the brood chamber is full ?
4. Can I harvest part of the honey combs from the brood chamber?
Appreciate you help to answer these questions for me please. Thank you in advance.
heya oh wouw never saw the burth of a bee. seen now a couple of queen's is it correct that you have different colored queen's ?
With all of that brood the hive is going to bust loose. When they fill up the remaining frames in that box, is the only choice to make a split?

Did you use all foundation frames? I just put together my first hive and I am debating on starting it with all foundation or half without. It's a horizontal hive that holds 30 frames, but I'm starting with 10.

Interesting difference of color in capped cells (top of frame looked whiter than lower down. Wondering why?
Top was honey and lower were capped brood. The honey is to feed the young larvae if they have a shortage or after the capped brood hatches.

I'm on my 5th inspection(?) to be honest I've lost count a bit!) since the end of May and I still haven't found the Queen, should I worry?
Both hives seem happy enough, just need more frames in place.
I would only worry if you don’t see any new egg! Sometimes those queens can be sneaky!

Tip : When you are doing an Inspection, take some close up photos with your mobile phone, then at leisure, you can zoom into those cells to see eggs (like grains of rice on end in each cell) and or small comma 'grubs' and bigger, larvae.
To "see" the Queen, read your Frames like a Book. Left to Right: eye scan each row of cells, then go down a bit, scan left to right etc etc... like you would reading text on a page in a Book.
That way you will see the Queen 'she will just suddenly pop into view' ! [ Unlike darting your eyes all over the place. 👀 ]
Also if you go through each Frame watching each side, place it ,after 'eye scanning' it, leave a big space on that frame, to the next one. That way the Queen won't scuttle quickly onto the next frame (where you say, wow, where's she gone ?) Having big gaps mean, as you check she cannot scarper onto the next, cos she can't jump or fly (!) Also take your time. If necessary, go back over each Frame, close those gaps. And close up the Hive !

Another is a really annoying so and so. Won't show her face, is like Willow the Whisp, taken me x3 weeks to spot her, get my camera focused. Bother, gone just like that !!! Darn, however she is a good layer and the hive is busting with Honey... Character v. Traits I guess.....🐝

One all the frames are full do you stack another box on top the same as traditional hives?
No watch the video, it is a long hive hence it is like a hollow tube in a tree that has fallen down, K removed a blocker board and gave them more frames, hence more tree to use.
K could turn that Long-Lang into a 2 x 7 frame "Flow Hive" by putting 2 x "7 Frame Flow Hive's" on top. A '7 Frame Flow' matches a '10 frame Long-Lang' but K has a 22 frame Long hence need a divider board between the 2 'Flow Hives' above the "Long-Lang" below. K probable only need 1 "Flow Hive" above the main honey store and close to the entrance to free flow about 45 pound or 20Kg of honey from 7 Flows of honey.
@@ianmackintosh7278 yes I watched the video and did see the blocker board being removed, but when that whole hive has full frames do you remove honey filled frames and replace with empty frames or do you stack a super on top.
Be a good hive to use to bolster small weaker hives or build up nucs with all that capped brood

I'm sure it would be an editing nightmare, but may I suggest a video to help people spot "the queen"?
A montage (sort of) of different queens on different frames; shown for 5 to 10 seconds (giving viewers a chance to look for her). Then highlight her so that the viewer actually sees her.
Start with shots where the queen is easy to spot; then progress to shots where she is increasingly more difficult to spot.
And if that wasn't difficult enough for you... give each segment a point value (based on how difficult it was to spot the queen), and give levels (or grades, so to speak) from "beginner" or maybe something like "Boy! Do you need help." And move up to more prestigious things like "Pro", "Ace" or "Queen spotting god".
I suggest this because your videos are some of the clearest and best detailed that I've seen. If anyone could produce a spotting aid like that, it'd be you.

Hi K, Kayley, please learn something NEW, lol, please look into "Flow Hives" for you "Long Lang". Those girls, yes I agree, the girls do the work, even though I am a man I also call them my girls. To me, a 7 frame "Flow Frame" centered over the entrance would give you easy honey to harvest but mean you need to cut and shut your top covers and roof. Not hard when you think of harvesting honey without extraction or a spinner.

Unless bees are perturbed for whatever reason, there is no reason for a real beekeeper to wear gloves which are clumsy and lead to crushed bees and clutziness. Bare hands are best while treating the bees gently with judicious smoke.
