Love the square saddle notches in the shop. I build Lazutin hives. Like a Layens but bigger. They hold a Lazutin frame which is basically a double deep Langstroph. They need to be strong enough to keep out bear and get nail boards as armor. I rip down 3/8 boards for frames and my top bars touch. I use dowels ripped in half for starter strips and bottom bars which I attach the sides of frames to. Was the easiest way I figured to make frames. My frames sit on the 2by and I rip down 3/8 strips to go around frames. I drill a hole and use a 1/4 inch vertical dowel down the center. I spend 50$ per hive. My hives are in central U.P. of Michigan on their own with nail boards to keep out bear. I don't buy bees. I just use 2 swarm traps and splits.

I know right! 😆 Tell you what, I'm finding wooden swords everywhere around here right now. And cardboard armor 😄

I’ve always wanted bees. The start up costs have me second guessing. I’ve had a few friends that spent a lot of $$ and then their bees died. One day!
There’s a group/program where people go around and remove swarms from peoples properties if they’re unwanted and relocate them at other residences that actually want bees. I’d love to get in on that!

I hear ya! The thing is about your start up costs though is it's not like buying a cow and having it die... It's more like buying a barn then your cow dies, but you can get another free cow. So if you get all your equipment (and build some!) then catch free swarms.... Eh, we'll see I guess!

This is great! You are very skilled! There’s a local hive maker I can buy from thankfully because I am sadly not a builder

Thank you! That’s cool. I’m thankful that I grew up learning woodworking.

I'm looking at adding to my Langstroth hives. The prices are outrageous. I checked the poly hives. Those prices are brutal.
I'm beginning to make Layens Hives. Cheap and easy to find scrap wood to build them.

That's cool! I love the DIY aspect of the horizontal hives. I'm hoping to get a couple more built this Spring.

What kind of router bit did you use to make a tongue and groove?

And no push stick on the table saw. Poor machine safety knowledge. But a nice build

LOL. I wanted to tell him that when he constructed the grape trellis. Wire can damage eyes.

The insides should be roughed up to encourage them to coat it with propolis

Interesting.. I never heard that. Would you mind explaining that to me a little more?

@@morethanfarmers bees seal up cracks, gouges, nooks and crannies, and unwanted holes to prevent drafts and places for unwanted pests and parasites to hide. The substance they use for this is called propolis. Propolis has health benefits to both bees and humans. It is said the more propolis in the hive, the healthier they'll be. If you rough up the insides..they will propolize the walls.

@@morethanfarmers No problem!! They also supposedly like the inside to be torched...I plan on doing this on my next build, but I don't have first hand experience with it as yet
