Yeah, no clue what GF was thinking. "Underpowered and overshadowed by Kanto" is Johto's tagline. Even the region gets overshadowed by the "return to Kanto" tagline.
Im fine with that. Aren't we supposed to pretend we don't care about stats and use our favorites? With all the swarm encounters like Marill and Yanma, I think collection was the focus of Gen II, and the Gyms were more dedicated to Gen I Pokémon that didn't have proper major trainers. Still pretty dumb that they put Poliwrath and Primeape on Chuck to make up for Bruno never having them... and then kept Bruno in the game... and by that logic, Pidgeot was a major mon on Blue's team, so Falkner should've had a Spearow or something... eh.
If I had a nickel for every time Hiker Anthony was a weirdly large problem in a nonstandard pokemon run I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
I appreciate the diversity of the team especially the Red battle team. Really feels like how someone’s Gen 2 final team should be, new, exclusive Pokémon and not being hung up on the best base stats. Very authentic!

ok, so first: i didn't know Joey's Rattata could evolve! i even remember reading a whole ass creepypasta about how Joey would, between battles with the player, multilate other pokémon and attach parts of them to his Rattata to "evolve" it. and for the baby pokémon question, i always really liked both Magby and Elekid, even though i don't really care about their evos. they're both so cute!
the mean look swap is one of those peculiar hangovers from gen 1; technically it's a fix to the peculiar issue of trainer AI and when they got to select their action, which was not when or before the player selects, but when when it was their turn to act. this can be seen mostly in the blaine and giovanni fights, as they use items after the player has already attacked (misty will use x-defend second in a turn as well if you have a mon faster than her starmie). the tweak was to go based off speed and for the most part this works and players won't notice, in part because the trainer AI is really awful in gen 2, but with trainers with better AI (lance, red and your rival in particular), they react to your choices if their mon is slower than yours. thus, red switches, as the game has already calculated that your switch is valid. this can be seen with fly/dig as well. the rival AI prioritises a field control with accuracy dropping, mean look, confusion and other stat buff/debuffs as his first priority, so if you're faster and use dig/fly and his mon has a self-buff move, he will always opt for it during your invulnerability. it hardly affects regular play but perish song/mean look in particular hurt because of this fix. otoh, at least no trainer is using hyper potions after you attack anymore? the newer games have a different AI, and they don't get to select their moves based on player input directly (but battle RNG is reliant on player input so it is, indirectly). but gen 2 is cobbled on the back of gen 1, so the issues still pop out
So glad to see a new video! I watched some of the streams which were really fun but I can tell I'm going to enjoy this one just as much 😊❤ Love your content Flygon!

Crystal was the first pokemon game I played (since Red/Blue/Yellow weren’t available for me). Been enjoying the content on this channel
the mean look swap is one of those peculiar hangovers from gen 1; technically it's a fix to the peculiar issue of trainer AI and when they got to select their action, which was not when or before the player selects, but when when it was their turn to act. this can be seen mostly in the blaine and giovanni fights, as they use items after the player has already attacked (misty will use x-defend second in a turn as well if you have a mon faster than her starmie).
the tweak was to go based off speed and for the most part this works and players won't notice, in part because the trainer AI is really awful in gen 2, but with trainers with better AI (lance, red and your rival in particular), they react to your choices if their mon is slower than yours. thus, red switches, as the game has already calculated that your switch is valid.
this can be seen with fly/dig as well. the rival AI prioritises a field control with accuracy dropping, mean look, confusion and other stat buff/debuffs as his first priority, so if you're faster and use dig/fly and his mon has a self-buff move, he will always opt for it during your invulnerability.
it hardly affects regular play but perish song/mean look in particular hurt because of this fix. otoh, at least no trainer is using hyper potions after you attack anymore?
the newer games have a different AI, and they don't get to select their moves based on player input directly (but battle RNG is reliant on player input so it is, indirectly). but gen 2 is cobbled on the back of gen 1, so the issues still pop out
So glad to see a new video! I watched some of the streams which were really fun but I can tell I'm going to enjoy this one just as much 😊❤ Love your content Flygon!
Haha I watched all the highlights on your other channel but I had to come watch the recap video here because your production quality and humour is just too good to miss out on :D
